The 500GB represents better value @ US$147.99 + Post (Deal here)
I know, it's already posted. Otherwise, I'll include the 500GB in the post.
What advantage do these have over standard Portable hard drives? (I.e. is the extra cost justified?)
I can understand having a SSD in computer speeds things up but as a portable device the only advantage I can see is faster file transfers but unless you are frequently transferring large files (i.e. videos etc.) then I feel this is unlikely to be of much benefit to you. (Am I correct or is there some other benefit too?)
you might want to run an OS from it, or it's just for the luxury of speed and immunity to heads crashing into platters when u drop a hdd, to a degree i guess.
True, and the small size matters as well.
I would love to buy this as well but I cant think of any good use.I presume it's more sturdy and able to take bigger knocks as no moving parts
No electrics device is immune to G-force. Convention rotational hard disks have many counter measures to prevent damage from G-force but just as devices with not moving parts (e.g. mobile phones) SSD drives can (and will) be harmed from major drops to the ground
Ok, fair point. But I'd hope a SSD could take a just little bit more of a knock than a HDD with platters. Not saying it's a reason to pay a big premium for one the above mentioned devices though

I'd like to see the same thing with a HDD.
In terms of use cases, I run databases from mine, I also have my Steam games on it. Both disk gobbling things that require fast throughput.
I tried running VMs on it but ran into some issues. Probably could've been solved with a bit of troubleshooting but wasn't worth the effort for me.
But for games and DB development on a low storage capacity laptop my 1st Gen one of these has been awesome.
It's also lighter, smaller and more shock tolerant than an HDD.
Aesthetics aside, would this yield better speeds and performance than a DIY - SSD [internal + a USB 3.0 external case ???]
Could be had for less than $100.00.
Kust curious the advantage of these dedicated models.
Also interested in comments from anyone who has made a DIY ssd portable.
I'm thinking of snapping up a cheap SSD, USB3.0 adapter and USB3.0 hub and making a little diy hub+hdd for my laptop that only has one usb port.
Well, these are tiny. But so is this: http://www.gearbest.com/hdd-ssd/pp_327150.html
And you can reuse/upgrade the SSD and the enclosure however you want… There's M.2 to PCIe, M.2 to SATA, M.2 to xyz bridges, etc - so long term, there is an argument to be made that this is a better + more flexible investment.
That said, I have had good luck with the durability of Seagate's external stuff, and I have often had trouble with cheap enclosures killing drives. The enclosures all seem to be metal, designed in china, and may be conductive. M.2 doesn't seem to have much shielding. So I see the potential for electrostatic damage.
While I was considering purchasing a 950 PRO to put in this enclosure (NVMe / PCIE may be useful in the future), considering the risk means I would be looking at SATA M.2 SSD. While I will want NVME/PCIE for the future, I don't want to risk damaging it. This deal is now $120 shipped after exchange costs. 950 PRO class M.2 will drop over time, and cheaper M.2 (SATA/AHCI) will be stupid slow by comparison, So I am going for this. :)
Arguably, one could look at a 128GB/200GB MicroSD with a simple USB adapter, or a USB/OTG key… but in my case, my needs for this are fast data transfer between SSDs, and VMs. So supplementing this in that way may be a better "expansion" option. :)
Just dropped another $10
Thank you for the update!
Remember thinking how hilariously expensive these were initially, but finally bit the bullet and bought one. Extra $10 off from the gift card promo to boot :)
What was the price before?
