Secure All Your Devices At Once (Even Devices That Don't Allow VPN Connections) with This Tiny, Powerful VPN Box

Seems like an interesting gadget if you have a lot of devices you want to secure behind a VPN. It would have to be pretty good for the price involved, but of course this is hardware, not software so you have to expect a significant increase in cost with that.

*For new users: 10% OFF your first purchase when you subscribe to receive email updates = US $269.10 (pop up appears on site when not logged in).

Not wanting to criticise the deal as such, but this is really just:

    • a Nexx WT3020 device (eBay price: ~20-40 depending on specific model)
    • some software to connect to a VPN (the devices are supported by OpenWRT)
    • a 'lifetime subscription' to a VPN service

It may be a great device, and a great VPN service. However, most of the cost is basically the VPN. The same device with a 2-year VPN service is US$129, and considering the frequency with which VPN services come and go I would consider whether that is a more prudent purchase. Depends on the effort you're willing to invest to set up, probably.

Whether this is a deal or not really comes down to how good the VPN is, and whether it sticks around.

  • Hmmm, somewhat mixed review from vpncompare.co.uk :

"For €59 (Approx £43 / $65), you not only get the Shellfire Box itself but this also includes 1 year access to their Premium VPN service."

"Unfortunately due to such a low priced and small product speeds achievable don’t touch much over 10mbps and while this is understandable for a device of this size and price it does mean it is unsuitable for those heavy downloaders or who require fast speeds such as those who wish to stream 4K video."

So they thought of it as a good, cheap low powered VPN device with one year free VPN for $65 US. So now we have the price at $299 US, which means paying $230 US for a "lifetime" VPN service from a company that needs funds from indiegogo.

For that money you could get a really nice wifi router that will do the same thing with enough change left over for a coupel of years VPN from a known provider. And do more than 10 Mps.

My money will be staying in my pocket thanks.

    • I'm kind of tempted to buy one of the base devices and test it with OpenWRT though having seen this product =)

  • Well one issue is that it'll kill certain services/websites like Netflix which block VPN connections.
v.v.v pricey for a basic router with a lifetime (whose, a butterflies?) VPN service configured.

The other is speed. you're routing all your traffic via their VPN.
If their service drops out, what happens? does your Internet go down?
Where are their VPN locations? Any in Oz?

Lifetime VPN services are just pyramid schemes, as soon as they slow down selling their service, they disappear.

I have one of these, which can do VPN and TOR (and Can do it over wifi as well, great for hotels!)
    http://aud.dx.com/product/gl-inet-6416a-micro-usb-powered-sm…

~$20USD delivered… Just add some knowhow googling, time and DD-WRT

  • Seems like a scam to me… I wouldnt trust that the service will stay open and functional into the future to justify the price.

  • "Crowd funded" is not a feature I want in a box I can buy for $20 elsewhere. I already have a VPN service for when I want to look at The Communist Party web site..
