I'm after my first projector and was wondering what you would recommend for a budget of about $1500-2000.
Thanks

Assuming that this is for home use, you have a few questions you need to think on.
LCD or DLP - each have their advantages, personally I go for DLP
Resolution - its basically going to be 1080p, since 4K projectors are still silly money
3D - why not?
Brightness - if you are only going to watch movies at night, then you can get away with dimmer, but for daytime the brightness counts.
Throw/Zoom/Lens Shift - for where you will place it, to get the picture you want.
I'd be inclined to see if there's anything that fits your needs around the $1000 mark and only go up from there if you need to to get required characteristics. I'd also look to see how much they are from overseas sites (since australian prices tend to be blown out). That's why you look around the $1000 level first, you can then get in under the import level if you find it cheaper elsewhere.

This. Measure up the projection distance from you preferred install location (consider how you will power and run input cables to the PJ)..
then jump onto Projector Central and have a play with their Projector Calculator for various projectors to see if they're fit for purpose.
We bought this for $1100:

(Yes bought from Harvey Norman).
Been using it for about 6 months now and it's excellent. Hooked up with a 7.1 surround sound system and a $120 screen from ebay, it's an amazing home theatre.
