Thanks everyone for the input, I will look into saving one copy in cloud and one separate copy in a external drive
From the report below, seagate having a higher rate of failure then toshiba

Additional information : I m using Mac book and iPhone
But is toshiba compatible with Mac? Doesn't show in the product info
Also, the easy back up app mention in seagate catch my eye

Do anyone has experienced on this two?

This is simply my opinion, but:

    • Most reliable? www.dropbox.com
    • Value vs. Reliability? SSD in a USB3 Hard Drive enclosure. Fewer moving parts = lower chance of failure.

Hmm. How long to upload 2Tb on my DSL link that maxs upload at 1Mbps, and that the rest of the family also shares?
I back up my pics to Google as I am content with storing jpegs as off site, but it was painful and took weeks to get them there and I still keep multiple copies locally.

Amazon cloud/drive/whatever allows you to store unlimited photos for USD12/year. This is the cheapest reliable option that I know of.

This is a good deal if you shoot in RAW. I'll take it up when NBN comes to me.

    Multiple backups.

  • A local raidbox see http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-network-attached-stora… plus back it up to google photos for great management, second copy offsite and unlimited storage at reduced quality (but basically for most users you can't tell the difference). Have been doing this myself for years and works perfect. Love the ability to be able to send media to friends/family via link (so no massive files) within seconds from google. https://photos.google.com/

just after a drive? read https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-stats-…

  • I heard maker of wechat, tencent, offer Alot free storage?

Weiyun, the cloud storage service from Tencent is offering a massive 10 TB (10240 GB) free cloud storage to its new customers. …

  • My system for storage and back up is multi-layered as to prevent data loss. It wasnt the cheapest to setup but the details include:
    1) 3TB HDD in tower
    2) 4TB Seagate External
    3) ReadyNas 4-bay NAS (4x2TB = 6TB)

The long term plan is to get another NAS box and keep rolling HDDs ie
    1) 6-8TB in tower
    2) ReadyNAS 4-bay
    3) ReadyNAS or Synology NAS

If you are keen to prevent data loss then you want to have a several copies, for best value I would just shop for 2x external drives (3.5") and just something like SyncBack (http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html) to keep it all backed up. Keep the drives powered down and not plugged in when not in use, that will help protect against power surges etc.
