Help me choose 2 Laptops

Hello OzBargin,

I am hoping someone can assist me, Long Story Short, I'm chasing the BEST Spec Laptop I can get for about 1k
Also, one for my Young Mate, but with a Budget of about $600.

  • Desktops and Macs are out, Sorry guys!

My Laptop will be used for Day to day tasks, Light Gaming (old school games/emulators)Video Cropping with Gopro Programs.
Clearly, I don't need anything that hardcore, But I'm tossing up between a few, I have read all the reviews and still cant make up my mind.
I have, however decided on the Min Specs I want..

Basically, I'm hoping someone can spend some time having a look around for me, I'm so confused after the last few weeks. I almost settled for a Thinkpad, but I didn't like its design.

From My research, I like the Business Laptops, They seem more robust and manufactured a little better, They look stylish and solid. However I think I'm seeing that the "entry gamers" have the same specs, just with some sort of Video/Graphics.

I'm open to Refurbs as well, as long as the company has a good rep and will stand behind a decent warranty.

Processor: i7 or i5 if it's quicker
Ram - 8gb Min, Hopefully user accessible
HDD: Anything really.
Size: 15" Min
Other Requirements: Looks Classy, Not Plastic, BACKLIT KB, That would be Swell!

The Other Bunker:
Processor: What ever is the best of a cheap bunch, i3/i5
Ram: Min 4Gb
HDD: Min 320Gb
Size:Min 14"

This Laptop will primary used for internet action, Porn, Ebaying, Pirating the pirates etc.
He does do a bit of Editing his videos "cropping" mainly.

Below are a couple of laptops I like, Tell me what you think, Direct me to your favourite store, Show me some bargains on ozbargin!

  • the lenovo laptop you mentioned is awful with battery life, 3-4 hours tops so you should probably take it out of your list, go for the edge series of ideapad300

    • Thanks for taking some time out to reply.
Battery time wasn't too much of an issue as Im usually close to some sort of power supply. I will look into your later suggestion, again, thank you.

In your life you will face bigger decisions that need to be made by yourself with bigger consequences so just research it, make a decision and move on with your life. Don't expect others to do your work for you and serve it up on a platter for you.

    • Cheers Mate.

Build quality, cheap price and gaming-grade graphics — pick two.

Business grade notebooks usually have very basic GPU's, or none at all. You can forget about gaming on any of these, but it's easy to grab for less than $1k, e.g Dell Latitude 5000 or 3000 series or HP Probook series. If you look hard enough, you can get a Core i5 machine for $600 to $700 on the DFO.

Entry level gaming laptops, like the Dell Inspiron posted on the front page with 53 upvotes, outfitted with discrete GPU's also have a decent build quality, but just not quite the same as a Latitude. Still, going by Linus's review on Youtube, it looks like a decent all-rounder machine. This particular laptop also has a 1080p display and a QUAD, not a dual core, processor, which are both very exotic parts usually found on laptops costing much more, which is a pretty sweet deal. Much better than that $999 MSI CX62 6QD-201XAU…

For your friend, you could possibly get him one of these which will be $600 dollars delivered with CLICK20, and it is more than enough for a home user.

    • Thankyou, I really appreciate your feedback.
I have just had a similar discussion with my partner, RE: Build Quality v. Product Specs. After shopping around,I tend to agree.
Now, regarding the specs of the mentioned quad core. Whats makes this easily identifiable within other laptops? From what I'm basing my search on is, higher iNumber, with higher herts and higher cache. So in some cases an i5 for instance could be better then an i7 would be due to said cores and hert rate,is this correct? Im having issues getting my head around it all.

Your other recommendation, I shall pass along. I hope his ready to raid the piggy bank!

      Cheers.

        There is usually an alphabetical code at the end of the processor model. e.g 2500 K , i3-4140 T , i7-6500 U , i5-6300 HQ

There are currently 4 suffixes you need to be aware of

Y = Ultra Low Voltage processor for tablets, hybrids, and very low power devices like ultrabooks. Does not require a fan to cool. You see this running in a Macbook Air, for example.

U = Low voltage processors, generally a dual core processor, running in a laptop. For example, Core i7 6500U, is a six-generation Intel dual core mobile processor with dual cores but four threads.

M = just means Mobile, and there's nothing much to write about it, except that it's the most common dual core CPU product line and in the 'middle of the road' option when it comes to performance and power consumption.

HQ = H igh Performace, Q uad Core, this is pretty self explanatory, but the HQ basically means a mobile processor with four cores, and not just two, and this is the most powerful you can get for a laptop CPU.

there's also a T suffix, but this is for desktop processors and it denotes a slower, crippled version of a normal CPU which is made for smaller PC's that don't have very good cooling

        • Awesome. Seems so simple when put out like that. I appreciate your explanation.
