Yes IS vs Non-IS. IS = Image stabiliser

would recomend pay a bit extra get 70-200mm 2.8 II

  • $1326 with insured postage at eglobal - and that's normal price (for them, AFAIK). Kogan would be a better deal if it was Aus stock - but I'm pretty certain it's grey, so you have to deal with (and wait for) Kogan for repairs.

I honestly don't understand the point of this lens, especially given that the fantastic but overpriced 70-300 F4-5.6 L exists.

For a lot less (and a small step down in quality) you could get the Tamron 70-300VC. On the Nikon side the Tamron is available but I would look at the Nikon 55-300 (DX, slightly slower focus, front lens rotates) and 70-300 (full frame, no rotating front element) both produce great pics.

I understand why the 70-200 2.8 lenses exist. But not the 4.

The fixed f4 aperture of the Canon is it's main selling point over the Tamron you've listed. A stop of light is worth a fair bit to some folks…
It's also 300g lighter and much more compact than canon's 70-300L, and the marvelous f2.8 version is a whopping 1.5kg to lug around all day long.
There's obviously a market for this lens, as it's one of Canon's best selling and most popular "affordable" L series lenses.

      • 2 stops I understand. 1 not so much.

I wouldn't buy the 70-300L due to price. I own the 70-300VR. Far from a perfect lens but it's wonderful. Perhaps if I ever get to try the F4 in the real world I'll change my mind. I'm not paying the premium to do so though.
