Woolworths Premium Mince and Steak has some kinda GRIT in it!!

Here's a very weird one..;

Of late, my wife and I have had little choice but to buy meat from Woolworths - either 'premium' mince, or premium quality steak. Alarmingly, on much more than one occasion, when chewing, things CRUNCH and grind in our mouths - as if there's dirt/rocks/foreign substances ground up in there. It grinds, and is a VERY loud crunching sound when chewing every few mouthfuls - not a passing slight discrepancy you might think you were imagining.. This is loud, grinding, NON-meat-based foreign bodies in there. But I can't find anything when I have a look. Needless to say it's over for Woolies and us with this appalling substitute for acceptable quality 'premium meat'.

Just wondered if anyone else has encountered this bizarre phenomenon, and how whatever it is could be ongoing? I've never encountered anything remotely similar from any other meat suppliers. Perhaps it's just our local store?

  • That is odd.

Never heard of this happening before.

  • Bad butchering can sometimes lead to bone being ground up in mince? That's the only thing I can think of. I buy my meat from a local butcher but I've also found when buying from IGA their meat is good quality

    • Source?

I have heard it from lots of sources, I was watching the Michael Mosley shows on SBS & another one called "In Defense Of Food"
Dr Karl on triple J has talked about it many times. There was also an Australian study that confirmed it also which was all over the news around Oct 2015.

        • It's only a correlation, and a tenuous one at that. No actual causation has been determined.

And not all meats are the same. For example, the US has a lot of intensive, feedlot-raised cattle whose meat needs to be washed in ammonia. That's a long way from the meat of grass-fed cattle. If you're concerned, go with the latter where possible.

Also, there's far worse in the average western diet that you should eliminate or at least reduce before you start getting all crazy about meat.

Finally, keeping things in perspective - you've got far more chance of being killed or severely injured driving your car to your psychologist to discuss your death-from-meat concerns than you have of eating the actual meat ;)

        • can i alleviate the harm by picking organic meat? or is that also technically processed meat?

    • Eating red meat is bad? Hmm tell that to our caveman ancestors

      • I'm as shocked as you are but when you start hearing the evidence from lots of credible people and studies then I guess it's time to listen.

What response did Woolworths have when you contacted them about it?

I mean, that was your first point of call, wasn't it? Did they help determine what the "foreign" matter was? Or, did you by-pass the whole rigmarole of contacting the place of purchase?

Wait till OP figures out there is no cumulative "karma" on Ozbargain

    • Sounds like a Facebook complaint to me :P

Are you sure your frying pan isn't flaking off some non stick surface?

Question is whether it was Premium Grit, True Grit or just Plain Grit. Since you didn't spit it out to examine, we won't know if it was bone or sand, or bits of your wisdom tooth.

  • Maybe you went to wrong department and bought pet food

Is it fresh grit from the fresh food people?

  • Like another said, it is not unusual for the home frying pan to leave carbon crystals on the meat that are crunchy.

  • I'd be complaining if I found any meat in my mince !

Dont buy meat from Woolworths. Very low quality. Sad.
