Bridgestone Tyre Problem

Hey people,

I purchased a set of 4 Bridgestone Serenity Plus in January and today two of them suddenly malformed in shape…both on the same side. My sister was driving at the time and only realised when the car seemed to steer to one side on its own. There were actually 2 flat surfaces on the 1st tyre. Then tonight after leaving from dinner, the back wheel also experienced the exact same thing…3 flat surfaces on the second which was really unusual.

Has anyone had similar experiences? If anyone knows why this occurred it'd be great to let me know as I am very worried about the remaining two. I already used my spare tyre so I have no replacement for my back wheel so I have just left my car for the meanwhile. I'm planning to go into Bridgestone tomorrow to get this sorted.

P.S. NRMA helped my sister change the first tyre and there were no signs of physical damage to the tyre which also confused the NRMA guy as she assumed it was a large puncture of some sort maybe from a nail. The alloy rim looks normal, and my sister says there shouldn't have been any malicious damage done to it by someone else etc.

Cheers.

  • where did you get the tyres from? Just go back to the shop? There are grey imports or even fake ones these days. Some shops offer insurance for $9 per tyres. Hard to tell without looking at the tyres. You said flat surfaces - is it the side wall? patches on the tyres? Or flat along the circumference - peripheral or centre? Take a picture and upload it.

    • I got it direct from Bridgestone. This was the first tyre: https://gyazo.com/31ffdad7de2e3a273eb630cd1104fd19

Second tyre is pretty much the same. Happened about 6 hours apart from each other.

      • Wow…rather unusual looking. My guess re flat surfaces - leak and then your sister moves the car forward.
How it leaks? It may not be from punctures, can be around the rim, fittings? Or crack rims on the alloys? Will find out when the shop infants the tyres and put the whole in the water bath,

        got it direct from Bridgestone.

        Who fitted them?

        • Hm but when I found that it'd happened to the back tyre (my car was parked) it turned out to have 3 flat surfaces - looks like the rubber is being sucked in. And yeah will head into Bridgestone in the morning. Got everything done together at Bridgestone - change, fitting, balancing etc, so I would have assumed all of this to be checked by the guys at Bridgestone.

        • Cheers for the insight btw!

      • The photo looks very unusual. I'm not a tyre expert. These are just my thoughts.

The flat sides are because the tyre has negative air pressure (ie. suction/vacuum). Normally tyre's will hold their shape. You can see tyre fitters rolling and bouncing new tyre carcasses that aren't fitted onto rims.

Does your sister live in an apartment block or recently broken up with a boyfriend? Its acceptable that random tyre defects happen but three tyres in a span of 2 weeks is like a million to one.

If its a case that the tyres are maintaining negative air pressure that means that someone has purposely let out all the air. Instead of it being a tyre leak or tyre puncture which would result in a donut shape during rest.

For your sisters driving safety I recommend she buy an easy to use tyre pressure gauge to check her tyre pressures before driving. And/or a tyre air compressor to fill her own tyres when same thing happens again.

        • Yeah even the guys at Bridgestone thought it looked really unusual. In the end both tyres had punctures on the inner corner of the tyre so I suspect my sister drove past a road with construction where nails may have been on the road. Got both replaced by Bridgestone for $50. Cheers for your thoughts :)

  • Could be a disguntled local if the car had the flat tyres in the same location. Or some kids playing a prank

    • Haha I really thought someone poked holes in the wheel; turns out it probably wasn't.

  • Deflated tyre. Pump it back up and check for puncture

    • Yup Bridgestone did that for me and indeed both had punctures in them, but on the inner side of the tyre so it wasn't maliciously done by someone. I suspect my sister drove through a road that had construction or something and drove over some nails. Got them both replaced for $50 - can't complain.

      Thanks for everyone's input :)
