Air Asia Cancelled Flights from Sydney to Bali

So I booked tickets from this OzBargain post for flatbed tickets to Bali in Jan '17. Seems as though they have now cancelled the route, as per this email:

Indonesia AirAsia X regrets to inform that your AirAsia flight XT 822 from Denpasar (DPS) to Sydney (SYD) on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 01:00 Hours (1:00 AM) has been cancelled due to the suspension of the route effective 1 September 2016.

My 'recovery options' are:

  1. Move flight to an earlier date before 1 September 2016 without any additional charges, subject to seat availability.
  2. Reroute via Kuala Lumpur on AirAsia flights within 14 days before or after the original flight dates, based on seat availability.
  3. Credit shell – A deposit equivalent to the value of the confirmed booking which can be used as payment for any AirAsia tickets or products, valid up to 6 months (180 days) from the date of issuance.
  4. Full refund equivalent to the value of the confirmed booking and in form of the original payment

I have friends who booked via other airlines and we are all staying together… kind of freaking out right now.

Any suggestions people?

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Oscar. Much appreciated. BTW better off building a boat it seems…

      • Tony Abbott would have given you one…

Airlines? Airlines are tough business. Hardly a profit margin, and if anything goes wrong, you're out of business. So no, airlines aren't free to do as they please. (Airbus and Boeing, etc, are a diff story)

  • on the same boat here. too bad

    • what are you going to do? there's an option to reroute via KL so I'm waiting to chat now

  • +5

    Saaame boat. Stop the boats.

OP use travel insurance if it costs you guys money to change stuff you've already booked. It's what it is there for.

    • i think you have a valid point here

    • good point… however haven't booked travel insurance yet since flight isn't until january

      • +2

did you use credit card with included travel insurance perhaps?

        • I'll look into it. I've been churning through CCs to get FF points. hopefully i haven't cancelled whichever card it was…

        • +1

@Bellpop: im with citibank and purchased with their platinum card.

          so far i found this

        • @kwetiaw: nice work!

        • @kwetiaw: same here. From the PDS: http://imgur.com/OIOGx2u

$200 excess. Cheapest flights for business class is $2000 with Virgin for my flights … :) (if I can get business)

          https://www.citibank.com.au/global_images/complimentaryinsur…

        • @togaboyau:

Im wondering if the excess is applied per ticket or per claim?

        • +2

          @kwetiaw:
I have initiated an insurance claim on my Citibank Credit Card with Allianz Insurance (their provider) and the way it is looking is pretty good, the operator mentioned that most likely to happen is full refund from AirAsia and insurance will pay the difference to book on the same date with different flight provider.

They'll send me the form and I will need to complete and mail it back for assessment.

          Fingers crossed.

        • @kwetiaw: business class though?

        • +2

          @togaboyau:
There are two issues I see here. I see Citibank getting out of this.
First is that in the conditions somewhere is states that it will compensate only to the original value of the ticket.
Second is that as a general insurance clause, insurance won't pay out if someone else will. In this case you are actually being offered a refund. Therefore two seperate grounds to show that insurance probably doesn't help in this case.

I've been tempted with that platinum card before so I'm going to read their pds now and see how it would fair against the insurance I bought (insurandgo)

Disclaimer: I don't have a ticket on this AirAsia flight, I'm just interest in what happens to those who did.

        • @che_97: im still hopefull, but you never know. Worth trying than none at all.

        • @kwetiaw: this is very true. Good luck to you. Perhaps you can convince them otherwise using a superior point within the product disclosure (or even within advertising materials)

        • @kwetiaw:

          Interesting it is Allianz?

When I called it was Zurich and not covered.

Edit: I posted an old PDS. https://www.citibank.com.au/global_images/complimentaryinsur…

Allianz is new underwriter but same terms.

        • @che_97:

          From the PDS

"We will pay these costs minus the amount of any refundable part of your rescheduled travel arrangements."

          Should answer the refund question.

        • @togaboyau:
          Page 28 of the PDS
"If you want to claim under this cover, you must take the following steps as soon as possible after the unexpected event:
(iii) recover any refund you are entitled to; and
(iv) cancel any other travel or accommodation arrangements that ow on from your original travel arrangements and that
you are now unable to use."

      • Fair enough. Mine was through credit card that had travel insurance but we didn't book anything else.

        • good point. i think purchases need to be over $500 for CC insurance to be applicable from what i can remember from the NAB fine print. typical…

        • +2

@Bellpop: For Citibank I was pretty sure it just needs to be paid for on the CC itself to be eligible.

          From the PDS

the cardholder’s travel is for no more than six (6) consecutive months or three (3) months for Citibusiness Gold Card cardholders; and
          2. before leaving Australia the cardholder obtains their overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) by one or a combination of the following methods:
          (a) charging the cost of the overseas travel ticket to the cardholder’s card; or
          (b) obtaining the overseas travel ticket under the Citibank Travel Program; or
          (c) obtaining the overseas travel ticket via the cardholder’s airline frequent yer program, provided that a minimum of 15,000 points were transferred to that frequent yer program from points earned on a Citibank Card or via Citi Rewards, over a 12 month period prior to obtaining the overseas travel ticket; and
          3. the person is a cardholder at the time they obtain their overseas travel ticket.

        • @togaboyau: point 3 there really seems to override that first two.
If you being a cardholder at the time of acquiring the ticket and there are no other objecting clauses then that would cover any method of obtaining them. Note obtain not purchased.

as soon as I book a holiday, I book travel insurance. I am sure you can see why now.

        • Exactly.

    • +1

Do you think travel insurance will cover like for like tickets, I'm only asking as I booked crazy cheap air Asia business tickets.

      • Let's hope!

      • interested in this too..

    • +1

Why are you worried about travel insurance? They offered a full refund plus other options…

    • People from Bali come here through Boats? Why can't we go there by Boat?

  • Same for me…departing from Melbourne

    • so they've cancelled all direct flights? wow…

      • Seems like it unfortunately

  • +1

Hmm same for me from Melb in November. Almost all the KL reroutes are a one day layover. Hmmm.

  • one day layover each way? oh man

  • Same for me… Booked hotels with no refunds… Would love to know what people think are the best options here? Haven't booked travel insurance yet for what it's worth

  • Received same email. Flying from Sydney. Booked for April next year, flat bed tickets from OzBargain post.

Luckily, I haven't yet booked accom.

If rerouted via KL, does anyone know if you still get the flatbed seats?

  • +2

Just got the text and email for cancellation of flights in late Jan'17.

OP - just get a refund and book with another airline since you already have plans with friends etc?

I personally don't want a refund or credit because I want to use the damn flatbed!!!! Luckily hadn't made any accommodation plans. I don't want to reroute as such, I want to just go Syd -KL on flatbed seats…wonder if that's an option.

    • will get over there somehow, seems like flights at similar times are closer to 1k as opposed to the $250 paid for each ticket…

      • damn!! yeah maybe the re-routing option is best for you then (cost-wise)

    • BTW i like your commitment to flatbed seats. HILARIOUS!

      • hahahah hell yeah! I wouldn't be paying full price for it!

  • +2

I like how they send the message after hours so you cant call their call centre straight away!!!

    • And too much volume for live chat to handle!

  • Has anyone ever flown via KL - can we leave the airport for long layover periods?

    • Went a few years back to Paris on AirAsia via KL. Was a 8 hour layover. Could leave the airport.

    • You definitely can leave the airport on your stopover. You will receive the other boarding pass at your departure airport in Australia. I always just take the KLIA Ekspres into KL on my long stop overs and then just walk back through immigration/security and go to the gate.

    • Agree with davohatcher. No issue leaving the airport. There is a budget tune hotel right outside that's not bad for an overnight layover. But getting the chance to go into the city actually a plus in my mind ;)

      • Pretty sure Tune is owned by the same owner as Air Asia, more $$$ for them!

    • Yep, I did it when I went to Lombok. All good.

  • +1

does this mean we can move to an earlier date before 1st septemeber and still get the flatbeds for same price (subject to there being seats) or will we have to pay the $1000 or so they usually are

  • +2

If anyone finds out whether the KL reroute is not subject to extra costs and is in premium, please do post!

  • +4

I am currently on hold with AA Indo to get my flights rescheduled…..will post once I know more…

    • We are all holding our breath waiting for your response…….good luck!

      • -2

do they speak english?? I thought about calling Indo but wasn't sure

  • +1

Currently having my three bookings changed, seems to be no problem changing the date to day before on first booking

    • were your bookings premium seats?

      • Yes premium seats and all changed to better dates, I was planning on going to Thailand on 2 of the 3 dates so this works better, thanks Air Asia.

        • Have you got confirmed emails? I thought I was changing mine in realtime to July, then at the end I realised it was a request and I must wait 48 hours for a response! I called back and told the same. Worried as not many flatbeds per flight and I need 3.

        • @simong:

          I need 4!

all flights had more than 4 available so I will wait for the confirmations. 3.5 hours left for people to call tonight so not everyone will call or get through. After initially calling the Indonesia line first and after a while trying Thailand who answered straight away and knew nothing I recalled Indonesia to make the changes.

          Good luck everyone.

  • In the live chat queue now, will see how it goes. Not bad for me, trying to find cheap WLG - MEL early Jan was a nightmare !

    • Did you manage to rebook in the end Shaw? Just curious because I'm flying the same (WLG - MEL) then onwards with AirAsia.

Was in Europe trying to rebook and their live chat kept screwing up, so I emailed them, 15 days and no reply. In the end I was transiting KUL on my way back to NZ so I just went to AirAsia ticketing counter and it was sorted in 10mins.

      • Yea mate, got it sorted over the phone, pushed the dates back 2 weeks too, away from school holidays. Sweet that it was that easy, I think it was just a massive workload for their team, no excuses for that obviously, but at times the queue on live chat was 100+, but live chat team was just emailing the request through to another department. I had to phone twice, but it did get sorted.

Did you grab the $139 return tickets from WLG?

        • Nah unfortunately i'm flying in mid December which is outside of the promo period for those fares, I had already purchased a AirNZ one way ticket for $120 as well. Originally I had to take the AirNZ because of timing to connect to Air Asia but that's a bit flawed now that I depart around 1am the next day instead of mid morning!

Thinking of continuing on travels from KUL on the return so may not need to purchase a return MEL-WLG anyway.

Just changed my flight via KL…cannot change departure point so if you are booked from Melb, you must fly from Melb (i.e. cannot change to Sydney)…and there is no flatbed in the flight from Bali to KL (and vice versa). No charge to change…but I did have to call the call centre in Indonesia to make the change as chat was taking too long.

Suggest you look online for the flights at the same time so you can pick the best ones (with the shortest layover).

    • So MELB to KLIA is flatbed?

    • Are they honouring 40kg of baggage the whole way through?

    • can you change arrival point? i.e. can I change to Syd-KL return on premiun (maybe this was something you didn't need to ask)

    • I would be except their frigging website refuses to show flights from MEL to DPS by continually showing errors!

  • Yes, Melb to KL is on the flatbed - apparently it is only available on D7 flights. They said they are honouring everything booked - seats, meals, luggage and red carpet book. I am hoping flythrough as well given I booked the shortest connection possible between the flights..to minimise the flight time. As for change arrival point, I am not sure about that but think they may not allow it given they would not let me change the flight from Melb - Bali return to Syd - Bali return. I guess you could try - the worse case they say no? I was told I would get an email in 24 hours confirming the new flights.

  • Just got off the phone with Indo. I can't change the flight to Syd-KL only and have to take the fly-thru option. As per sunnyindubai above, there is no flatbed between KL - DPS (which is a 3hour flight by the way).

Just shitty at having to fly 8.5 hours and then another 3 as opposed to approx 6 direct & then shitty at them not just letting me stay in KL (which I knew was a far strech).

Of course the call agent encouraged me to take the credit note & use it to re-book SYD-KL flights hahaha no sir!

    • +1

You should be able to stay in KL… just via Bali… for example fly like this

MEL > KUL > DPS > KUL > Stay for your holiday > MEL

      • and stay for a few days? I don't know if this is possible as they didn't suggest it…otherwise will take the longest layover & at least get a day in KL. I'm calling the local centre tomorrow morning anyway so will ask specifically.

    • -1

you can take the flight to KL only, you just have to tell the agent at the airport for your luggage tag printed KL and release in KL.
that's what the CS told me on the other line.

      • what????!

        omg

I doubt that is the case as other people have mentioned experiences where if you are a no-show for your 2nd leg (KL-DPS in this case) your return flight is also cancelled (KL-SYD)…and then why didn't the call agent I spoke to mention that ? So confused.

        • oh i booked single ticket each way, that's probably why.

        • @ishe: can you please clarify, you had a one way flight to DPS which they changed to one way to KL only?

        • @strawberrybug: correct

        • @ishe: how? was it a premium seat?

        • @strawberrybug: the original ticket has 2 booking#, its a flatbed from SYD - KL and KL - SYD.

        • @ishe: very lucky that they changed the flight route for you. I don't understand then why they didn't for me

        • @ishe: I understand how that'll work to get you to KL, but what happens when you don't turn up to the dps-KL flight?

        • @saine: and @ strawberrybug

ishe booked singles tickets, they don't have to fly the KUL to DPS leg. Their return leg will be unaffected by not flying KUL to DPS however their return leg may be affected if they don't fly DPS-KUL. There is some forums that mention that Air Asia works different to full service airlines and missing a leg does not affect the rest of the ticket.

        • @dandandan: cool thanks for your insight. Ishe's posts were fairly vauge so I'm not too sure, will try to get a clear answer from the call centre but they are pretty hopeless/vauge at the best of times!

  • +1

Probably going to be pissed off. Need to wait 48 hrs to see if the dates I requested are available :(

  • +1

Cool, it didn't take 48 hours, just got my email confirmation of new flights now.. Happy with that, only cockup is due to daylight savings the day I asked to leave is really a day earlier, as it's a 1am flight… but due to the original deal and the hassle we can easily live with that. Truth be told we would prefer going in July so it's a win!
    1

    • I'm still waiting so doesn't bode well.

    • old news. i think there was a thread up previously discussing it…could possibly be a reason I guess.

  • Has anyone flown these sectors recently? (SYD/MEL-DPS) if so what was the load factor?
Really didn't think that the direct SYD/MEL- DPS flights would be the first to go.

They are apparently restructuring "looking to clean up operations" with AirAsia-Indonesia due to bad profits compared to the improvements (financially) of Thai & Malaysia AirAsia & AirAsia X. They and merging Air Asia Indonesia X & Air Asia Indonesia into one operation.

There are also a few domestic and other international flights now being withdrawn from scheduled operation by the Indonesian side of the brand eg, Yogyakarta to Singapore
