Windows 10 Upgrade is still available for FREE using 'Assistive technologies' loophole

Update:

For the general public, the free upgrade offer for Windows 10 ends on July 29. However, if you use assistive technologies, you can still get the free upgrade offer even after the general public deadline expires as Microsoft continues our efforts to improve the Windows 10 experience for people who use these technologies.

With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, we’ve taken a number of steps to improve the accessibility of Windows 10 accessibility. To learn more, read our blog that details some of these improvements.

Before you upgrade, please check with your assistive technology provider(s) to learn more about their software compatibility with Windows 10.

If you want Windows 10 now and are ready to take advantage of the free upgrade offer, click the button below to get started.

WPC is in mid July in Toronto, I'm sure they'll announce an extension then.

  • win10 has brought my Dads old win7 Dell back to life.
startup/shutdown and general speed is back to normal again.

Put an SSD in there and Bob's your Uncle

      • i was thinking that.
needs a new battery first though.

  • Considering how hard they're pushing W10, I think it's a bluff. Either they'll renege with some 'Wow! X million installs in Y months! We're overwhelmed by how many people love Windows 10 and decided to keep upgrades free indefinitely!' or they'll leave easily-exploited loophole open so people can still get it for free.

    • The loophole so far is that anyone needing accessibility features (e.g. screen readers) will have a free upgrade indefinitely. I don't know how they will enforce this though.

So those who have upgraded to Windows 10 from 7, is it worth it/worth the hassle? :)

Your mileage will vary. One issue that might ruin your day is basically, the lack of drivers.

A lot of laptop manufacturers, particularly ones that make a lot of cheap, low end laptops, can't be bothered to write drivers for Windows 10. So what do they do? They tell their customers to avoid upgrading to the latest version of Windows

      http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/05/31/windows_10_samsung_f…

The reason why most hardware remains on the 'Not yet ready for Windows 10' list is because nobody can be bothered to ever test any of it to validate that it really does work right. They can't really blow millions of dollars trying to test every common piece of hardware out there, and Microsoft sees no point in testing either because it doesn't add value to their product.

So you end up with a lot of wifi chipsets, motherboards, peripherals etc. that don't have a proper working driver for Windows 10 and they become unstable or unusable once the User switches to the new OS.

      • Thanks for you reply, I really appreciate it. Is it possible to revert to Windows 7 if 10 goes bad? Thank you again.

        • Yes, if you still have your installation DVD from Windows 7 definitely. Otherwise I think you can create a system repair disc (search the internets).

I upgraded all my PCs to Windows 10 and it's much better; hopefully it will go smoothly for you like it does for nearly all of us.

        • @whgb: thanks a lot! Might give it a go, cheers :)

  • Yes, definitely. Windows 10 is much much better than 7 & 8. Using it for a year now and love it.

    • can you elaborate on how it's better, does it perform better? What about for low end PCs?

Works a lot better than windows 7 on my low budget laptop. A lot snappier than it used to be and no issues so far

  • main topic updated.

  • Upon clicking, it saves an .exe file which starts the update. Not sure if the file is re-usable on other PCs or not.

    • I don't think it would be, the installation process will probably be hard-coded to check certain prerequisites and features before it commences the upgrade.

I just tested it with my Media Creation Tools that I created sometime ago. It can still upgrade my 7 to 10 and activated.

  • With that unstoppable anniversary updates. My laptop became useless. It keeps booting into the BSOD. Had to revert back to Windows 8.

    • I'm sure Microsoft is to blame for your laptop having issues.

      • Mate, it works fine before the updates.

        • How exactly is Windows 10 to blame? Perhaps you had outdated drivers that were conflicting with newer ones installed during the upgrade.

        • @cdestratis:

If it works before it should work with the updates. Are you saying I should blame my laptop because it's not working with their updates?

        • @HandsomeMonkey:

Perhaps, but I would personally not upgrade from older operating systems for this very reason.

      • Hey mate, have you tried doing a clean install of Windows 10 from say usb since your upgrade from Win8 to Win10 has been now activated on Microsoft end. Maybe give that a shot if you haven't. Hopefully will fix the BSOD issue, maybe the upgrade was corrupt. If you can heavily customise Windows 10 especially the start menu you will enjoy it much more than Win8 and trust me will run much better on your lappie if you can get past the BSOD issue.

        • I did clean installed on it twice. Windows 10 works fine before the anniversary updates..

Windows 10 has still been free with no loophole.
Activates and works fine on anything if you upgrade from 7 or 8. Just use media creation tool:)

    • That's right. It's still free to upgrade. I think the whole "free upgrade ends in July" was just a ploy to get everyone onto Windows 10 quicker.

  • Just wanted to post here saying that you can STILL update to the latest Windows 10 version through to December 31st 2017, as per the link provided.

I'm currently updating from an outdated version of Windows 10 to the latest update; whether or not this 'Activates' my version of Windows 10 is another issue entirely. Can't even remember if I paid for this version or if I had it activated through my university somehow. I'll report back with an update if there is any.

    • Update: It did not activate my account. Damn.
