why dont they just donate the 10K to variety without all the social media bs marketing? …also gold coin donation does not equal 'free'.
this isnt charity or genuine goodwill …….its just more marketing & advertising masquerading as such

    • +6

They should have a full day of it once a year & call it M'Cappy Day!

    • You should write this on their facebook.

    • +1

yep, if they had any mettle behind this "gesture" of "goodwill" it would be "donate" for a LARGE coffee.

      Small Cappacino?

      GTFO.

      • +1

Good call…might as well be a babycino! ;)

    • +1

How much are they donating out of that $1?

Charities are well-known to be false-marketing tactics for a long time now.

  • apparently its supposed to start on 6th june

    • That's good. Just enough time to let them hear our rants on their poor marketing.

  • +5

Still prefer 7/11 coffee for $1 thanks, lol

    • agreed. worst coffee ive ever had at a cafe

      • -1

        It's not a cafe it's a milk bar

    • I agree, Gloria jeans coffee is gross. I prefer even 7/11 to it…

    • Yes, agreed. 7/11 latte coffee is very much better. Always $1 per small cup but more than enough.

  • Does that mean it already started?

    • Don't be mean?

  • +2

When the above people say that 7/11 coffee is better, they aren't joking. I would only go to Gloria jeans for not-coffees like iced mochas and whatever

    • +4

I actually don't get all the hate with 7/11 coffee, maybe the tightass in me kept having it so many times I forced myself to be hooked on bad tasting coffee lol

      • +3

7/11 they are really a lot better than I expected.

Haven't drink from GJ for a long time, my nespresso is better.

        • I don't mind 7/11 coffee, or Hungry Jacks…for a couple of bucks, it's fine IMHO; conversely I've never had a good one from a McCafe, and if I'm paying barista money, I want a good cup, not the slop McD's are peddling at full price.

I did get a shock the other day, a colleague brought me in a large coffee & asked me to try it, then asked me to guess where it was from (I couldn't recognize the cup)…had a gulp, not a bad coffee at all, and you could've bowled me over with a feather when I found out it was from Coles/Shell Express & cost $2…it was a good size too!

Now, I used to bitch out Coles coffee coz the first half dozen I tried were rough as old bags, but they must've changed something, coz this was really palatable…I'll be trying one again to make sure it wasn't an anomaly! ;)

      • +1

Some 7/11 stores have coffee which is good, others not so much. Not sure if its the managers, but they vary with amount of water and amount of milk in the coffee per store. Usually consistent for the same 7/11 store.

      • +2

Have you tried hungry jack's coffee?
Now that is very nasty, I hate drinking it. 7/11 is way better.

        • +1

So true, even maccas coffee is watered down to the Max

    • +6

Most people these days have so much milk in their coffee, you simply wouldn't know the difference.

Cappucino is supposed to be 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk, 1/3 foam, in other words it should be dark. Should be a strong milk coffee. Post the coffee craze, every cap you get now is a luke warm latte in cap cup with chocolate on the top.

      People suck.

the far-right must be struggling to raise election funds this year…

Did a quick skim read and that link made me want to buy their coffee.

      • skim

I see what you did there. Pun intended?

    • +2

whoooaaa …. their coffee isnt great(but it's not as bad as many on here have made out)
and i had a vague idea about their hillsong connection but damn…. this is ugly business
gonna walk further from now one(probably drink their coffee about 10 times in a year anyway)
      thanks for sharing

    • +1

Personally I don't think it makes sense to boycott supporting the Salvation Army just because they have the biblical stance on homosexuality. The article is a bit over the top in some ways. That stance wouldn't have an effect on the charity work they do.

    • +1

Gloria Jeans has NOTHING to do with Hillsong or the religious lobby these days - NOTHING.
It was sold to a publicly listed company Retail Food Group over a year ago (see their website here: http://www.rfg.com.au/index.php/component/content/article?id…)

    • Some of the stuff they did in the past is wrong but.

      GLORIA JEANS’ OWNERS
Gloria Jeans was founded by Nabi Saleh (an elder and board member of Hillsong Church

Wow! How dare they attend church.

  • +2

that's how much a small cappuccino should cost!

    • $3.8 for small cap

  • +2

    is this Aus wide?

    • Yes

      • Not on today at Harbourtown Adelaide.

  • +3

    Good on them!

  • I haven't had a GJ coffee in 2 years or more. I still remember the taste…

    • +1

      I still remember the taste…

Should prevent you going back for another 2 years then lol

  • +2

    Terrible coffee

  • +1

I read this as $1 small capsicum and was like.. cool..

  • +2

I am not able to understand what people are complaining about! What I understand is that GJ are selling a cappuccino for $1 & if they reach 10K mark [shares on Instagram( which I don't follow)] they will donate 10K to charity. And if they don't they won't donate anything to charity. But you'll just get your coffee for $1 anyway. What's wrong!

If their coffee is that bad that it's not even worth $1 that I am not too sure about as I haven't tried their cappuccino for years

    • +3

What's wrong is how their donation to charity is conditional.

If they really have it in their hearts to help others, they'd do it without making a big song and dance about it.

      • this isnt about charity its about promotion nothing else…..
10,000 x gold coin donations = $10,000+ …..its the CUSTOMERS that are donating the money…and only if gloria jeans gets enough social media likes in the promo otherwise theyll pocket the gold coin donations as revenue!

  • +1

Supposed to be FREE but they want a gold coin for it. Then they donate OUR money so they look good …… Much like Colesworths in the way the blugers try to shame customers while extracting donations at the register.

  • +6

I stopped drinking Gloria Jeans when I found out about the Hillsong connection and where the money was going. I don't agree with the pray-the-gay-away camps and other things they do, so stopped giving them my money. Haven't gone back

    • +1

yes, but also their coffee is shit.

    • +3

There has been a change of ownership.
The master franchise is now owned by Retail Food Group.

      • +1

yeah this happened in 2014. Thats why when we questioned a staff member about 2 years ago they denied the hillsong connection.

    • +2

      I don't agree with the pray-the-gay-away camps…

That's why they switched to simply slipping bromide into the coffee. :p

  • +3

Does anyone over here realise that Gloria Jeans got sold to RFG group back in OCT 2014. RFG group owns Michelle's, Donut King, Crust Pizza and many other brands. They are publicly listed company. Also a small at Gloria Jeans is a regular in cbd. I like their coffee a lot because of strong taste.

    • Yeah, I know it got sold by Hillsong. I just haven't gone back to GJ since

      • Hillsong never owned Gloria Jeans. A member of the church did.

  • Good to know, thanks OP!

  • +1

Ok so how do we know this deal is for real??? I have called into the cafe and noone knew anything about it (not even if it starts on the 6th or whatever). Where did MrT15 get this source of info from??

  • +2

Anyone consider that the deal might be that your gold coin is a donation AND when they get 10,000 shares they'll donate $10k?
It's not new for companies to market their charitable activity. I actively support ethical and charitable companies.

Sometimes, you guys are just looking for stuff to whinge about. If you don't think it's a good deal, move on - use that energy for something more productive.
And go ahead and neg my comment until it's hidden - my point will be proven!

  • Consistently the worst coffee I've ever had. I would actually give their coffee a minus score, i.e. you would have to pay me to drink it. Tastes like they reuse the coffee grounds, but worse. I am amazed that people go there. Maybe their other drinks are good?

    • may be to check out some chicks

  • +1

The dude at Penrith store put $1 of my $2 donation in the till, and the other in the donation box. Seems legit.

  • Note that not all stores are participating.

The GJ at the corner of Pitt St. and Park St. near Town Hall station is not. (The short hair female staff was pretty rude too)

  • Wonder if this is available on Public Holiday Monday ?

  • Also GJ store on the corner of Pitt and Hay St is also not participating.
