  • "That means even the little details are visible." -> Assuming you have a blu-ray or game sources, but for 95% of the tv that customers would watch its not in 1080p anyway

    • make that 100% :)

  • Clive Peters had this same special a couple of months back at $999 with the bonus Bluray. They only ran it for 3 days only. This model is selling in most places for around $1200.
From forums I've read, the only notable difference between the S10 and G10 is the G10 has better color gradation, I did see a little bit more vibrant color on the G10 when they were side by side in the store, but you wouldn't notice it if they weren't side by side.
It's a reasonable bargain at this price, but definitely would have been better with the bonus Bluray.

    why bother
Plasma uses too much power to run.
the shops are selling 40"/42" LCD for less than $999

Blue Ray players are selling for around $100-120 nowaday. Not that expensive anymore.

    • The power difference accounts for about 10 bucks a year.

      • and if you buy an equivalent LCD by paying say $500 more you need 50 years to get your money back from electricity savings. hmmmmm.

        • -2

Not true. It all depends on how much you uses it. 5/Hours a day on avg and 365days a year. 100watts could means 50$ a year over 10 years which is normal for lifespan of a TV.

Sony EX700 40" LED Uses around 107 Watts

Panasonic 42" Plasma Uses around 400 to 500 Watts

So say its 300Watts Difference over 10 Years at 5Hour of Avg TV per day all Year around. = $1500

          • @addo: whoa……that is not quite right

5 hours a day at $0.19-0.20 per Kwh for a plasma that runs at 0.4w standby when not in use and on 217w in 'normal' mode for 5 hours a day uses just about $80 a year…

For 10 years, that is $800, nearly half the price you just claimed…

          • +1

@addo: The difference per year for 5 hours a day would be about 60 dollars (depending on your settings). If your prime concern is merely cost efficiency, you should know the average life expectancy of both plasma and LCD is 7 years. So, at best, you recoup 420 - in reality, the figure is likely to be much lower (and you'll probably upgrade before then anyway) over the course of 7 years.

If you're going to sacrifice PQ for the sake of saving electricity, you might as well just buy a MUCH cheaper TV, no? Each to their own, but $1500 is nothing short of a hyperbole.

            • @pais: Its just like I'm reading the whirlpool forum.

Just agree to disagree with each other

            • @pais: If you are worried about saving electricity, buy a smaller screen. A 21" screen uses 1/4 the electricity of a 42" screen.

          • -1

@addo: If you're really so concerned about saving money, you could always buy a current gen. plasma, which has the benefits of lower power usage and a better price point than LCD/LED…

ie. 50" Panasonic TH-P50U20A (New model)
            5 star energy rating
            122 Watts
            17 Watts in standby
            RRP $1799

Or, you could stick to your guns and pay a higher price, for the same power usage, smaller screen and still proclaim that you're saving money. :)

  • If anybody wants a good deal for $999, QQ Discounts at Ashfield Mall, NSW
is selling a 50" Samsung series 5 full hd 100hz lcd tv for $999.
that is cash price only but still..best deal i've seen for under $1000.

    • I would seriously do a side-by-side with another TV before buying a Samsung. I had a look at a heap of 50" sets over the weekend, and the Samsung had absolutely horrendous picture quality. It looked like it was down-sampling to 256 colours, as most peoples faces looked like some sort of pastel portrait..

      • I would never trust retailer's setups/configs.

And what about the component connection they use with 50" panels. I don't know if they really want to make a sell!

        • That of course is an issue as well. I thought that possibly someone had been playing around with the config, but it's not like you can ask them to reset it.

It wouldn't make much sense for them to setup an older model to display like crap though… They need to clear old models, not hold onto them. :P

    • Is that a new model or a refurbished product? QQ Discounts used to sell a large number of refurbished Samsung products from memory, havn't paid much attention to them since. They quoted higher prices for their refurbished stuff than what Bing Lee would quote me for the same thing new.

And now for a comment that is actually relevant to this deal…

I have the 46" version of this TV and it is just stunning. I paid around $900 refurbed so this seems like agood deal. In saying that, if you're going Full HD you want to go as big as possible or you won't be able to tell the difference in definitions. Buy a size bigger than you think you need.

The LCD vs plasma debate is a waste of everyone's time - they both offer incredible quality pictures, just pick which you prefer and get the best model your budget allows. For plasma fans looking in this price range - I'd say this is as good as it gets.

  • I have an older Panasonic plasma, and have been very happy with it. However, I have been holding off upgrading to a new (and larger!) model until the apparent problem with deteriorating black levels in current models is resolved. Plenty of reading here : http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=86117

Like Ryang above, I'm not totally convinced about the Samsung PQ either, but I might have to re-look if Panasonic don't get their act together sometime soon.

  • I bought the 42 G10 about a fews weeks back when they had a $998 web sale from teh GG including a free Bluray.

The PQ is outstanding combined with a WDTV connected via HDMI it really is exeptional. The black levels are really precise, hopefully the "black level" issue doesnt appear. My gripe is that it only has 3 HDMI ports (home theatre, WDTV, bluray & gaming console) I called Panasonic call centre twice for configuration advise and they were really good to deal with.

  • great price, I bougth same one at $1799 just 11 months ago. later got a free Wii for my family anyware.
This TV is very good for me, all controls are very easy.
if you like to connect PC with TV. LCD may perform better than PLASMA. I can feel slight but visible refresh on screen when connect to my laptop, but I have not such feel on my OMNI 32' LCD TV. beside that, this TV is perfect for me.
