Did I get a bogus Samsung EVO MicroSD Card???

Hey guys

Just received my Samsung EVO 64GB Micro SD Card from Amazon. I downloaded H2testW and the write speed was 11.8MB/s at 500 MB file. Meanwhile the maximum capacity available reported was around 60GB. Does this mean that this was a bogus card?

I decided to record 1 min of 4K video on my phone and least to say there was quiet a few jittering in the video and some skipping.

Just received my Samsung EVO 64GB Micro SD Card from Amazon.

Did you purchase from Amazon directly or from a 3rd party seller listing it on Amazon? If you bought it off Amazon, it's highly unlikely it'll be fake.

    write speed was 11.8MB/s

The writes of samsung EVO is claimed to be around 15Mb/s, so 11.8Mb/s doesn't raise any alarms. I'd only be worried if it was under 10MB/s

maximum capacity available reported was around 60GB

That's usually the case with all SD cards/USBs, actual capacity being around 5-10% less than the capacity they claim. If it was a fake card it'll be something like 4-8GB.

I decided to record 1 min of 4K video

The samsung EVO is a U1 card, which means that its 15MB/s write speed won't be able to handle 4K recording. 4K recording demands a 40MB/s write card at the minimum.

U1 is actually rated at 10MB/s write speed

      No Amazon direct

But how come Samsung don't advertise the read/write speed of their card? It just says Memory Speeds of up to 40MB/s

You have a genuine Samsung Evo mSD card from your analysis. If you right click on your removable storage device, and go to properties, the capacity will be: 64,xxx,xxx,xxx bytes

    Manufacturers treat 1,000 bytes = 1kb, 1000kb = 1mb, and 1000mb = 1gb.

    Computers read them as 1,024 bytes = 1kb, 1,024kb = 1mb… etc etc

This results in the lower capacity you see

    • That's what I thought as well, though it's weird when I buy identical cards but the capacity of the cards shows up with slight differences. (e.g. When I've bought 2 32GB Cards, one shows up as 29.7GB while anothher shows up as 29.4GB or something)

  • So do I need the EVO+ or EVO Pro for my phone 4K recording??
