SSD Migration Clone Software

nabbed one of the recent sandisk ones - want to clone OS without having to trim video etc so need ability to exclude folders.

only ever done one before, it was intel and came with own instructions and software download IIRC

thanks - seeing as there are so many SSD deals, surely ill get schooled here…unless you are using them all as paperweights lol

Most people tend to recommend Macrium Reflect Free.

First you image your existing hdd/ssd to an external drive/nas/whatever, and then you restore that disk image to the new SSD.

There's a lot of guides and youtube tutorials on how to do this.

    • thanks - im not a total noob, but youd have to trim off the video files etc as its just a system image yeh?

also, could you just use windows to do that?

    Best for me was: http://www.farstone.com/software/drive-clone.php
    Drive clone from farstone.
    Straight fwd.
    Install software.
Place target SSD in external USB case ($25), plain USB to SATA cable, or if you have 2nd internal bay.
    Start software
Optional: drop Restore partition if you want.
    Copy
    Shutdown
    swap drives
    STart
    Done.
Might want to uninstall the SW if no longer needed

    • cheers - do u have to trim existing drive to fit first? ie remove video etc to get it under 120GB?

It can resize and you can remove unused partitions.
But it does not delete files if size is insufficient.
If you use too much space you need to reduce consumed space before.
Also consider it is a good idea to not use an SSD beyond 80% as it needs to move often used sectors around to spread the wear.
If you are already close or over consider significant size reduction by delete files or upgrade the SSD to a larger model.

CloneZilla is Free Open Source Software.

I've heard nice things about Veeam Backup too. I haven't tried it though.

I used EaseUS Backup recently to clone HDD to SSD. Everything was straight forward and easy.

    • I tried EaseUS but it didn't work for me.

  • I used AOMEI Backupper Standard and cloned a larger drive to a smaller SSD.
Be sure to tick optimise for SSD.

  • I'm leaving a reminder for myself and a message in case anyone else finds this useful.

Sandisk SSD instructions describe cloning with **Apricorn EZ GIG IV **

    Basically:
    - I downloaded the software
    - opted to create a bootable disk (DVD-R in my case although USB and CD-R are other options)
    - restarted with the Apricorn EZ GIV IV bootable disk
    - connected an SSD
    - cloned laptop to the SSD

After swapping drives, I can confirm reboot was successful and I am using the new drive.

(I'd had problems with FarStone which included 0xc000000e error on reboot)

    • This isn't working the second time around; I'm going to create a forum post that is notes of what I'm up to
