Heated Pet Bed - Anyone had experiences with these?

Hello OzB Community,

I have a senior citizen kitty cat living at home, we estimate she's around 20 years old , and she really feels the cold. I want her to have some good comfort in her senior years and can see so many different beds available, and so many different offerings in each brand.

So I turn to you for help. How have your purchases ended up - waste of money, or a great addition?

My focus is on;
Not too expensive (I'm on OZB - duh)
Not too power hungry - does anyone know roughly how much they draw? I am going to put it on a timer for night time use only and when we aren't home.
Kitty needs to love it.

One emailed to me recently is 'Tail Waggers' from Scoopon;

Any ideas and feedback to help me make a choice would be much appreciated!

    My cat has taken residence on our heated fleece throw.
    It is supposed to be for us but she is on it like a shot…
    We bought ours a year ago but they have just come up for sale today in Aldi.

    • Thanks for the idea, yes our three all love the fleece blankets! Nearly as much as us :)
      I didn't know these existed.

    I bought a cheap one years ago, can't remember how much it cost, but wasn't much. It is just a hard plastic disk about the size of an A4 page that you plug in and put a blanket on. It hardly even feels warm to the touch but must do something as our elderly cat just about lives on it

      My heated fleece throw never seems warm if you leave it yet it warms you a treat if you are under it. Similarly, it does feel warm if you double it up and leave it.
      I presume that it does enough to create a warmth barrier that stops the cold getting to something and cooling it down.

    • I'm a little worried about the cheapy ones, but from feedback so far they might be ok after all.
      Thanks!

    I don't know much about pet heaters but I would probably avoid cheaper brands.

    You could buy a Snugglesafe. Pop it in the microwave and it stays warm for up to 10 hours. We used it for rabbits as well as sick pets at the animal hospital.
    The running costs will be lower and there is less risk. You can put it under their favourite perch.
    But OZB rules mean you should never be paying anywhere near $60 for it.

    • I'll check it out - thanks for the idea. Yeah $60 is a bit too much :)

    I bought one for $5 from ebay. e.g. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pet-Warm-Electric-Heat-Heated-Pad…

    It has 2 heat settings, high draws 22 watts, low 12w. Note the meter I have can be inaccurate at low wattage, but this will be the ballpark. High gets uncomfortably warm after a few minutes, so low is likely adequate. At 12w, and 25c kWh it will cost under 8c a day in power costs.

    • Nice one, this is a good price. Only concern is how safe it would be… 22W suggests pretty safe, and only using while home anyway.
      Cheers for the added calculations, 8c a day is within the budget for Kitty's well being ;)
      This one's now on my shortlist, thank you.

      • I rate it as 'not super safe' as while it is using 22w it would be a native 240v.
        I have an RCD in the meter box, and I wouldn't let kids muck around with it, so safe enough for my high risk lifestyle ;-)
