  • What, exactly, are the benefits of a $150+ electric toothbrush…?

    • ….to remind you how expensive dental treatment could be?

      • But… I use a $20 electric toothbrush and have good oral hygiene? I'm genuinely interested to know how a $150 toothbrush is superior to, say, the $20 toothbrush I'm currently using.

        • google knows :)

        • +2

@evie: Google tells me, "If your daily routine includes using a standard toothbrush for two minutes, and also floss, you are getting everything (and more) than a sonic toothbrush can give."

So, I'll conclude, the biggest thing a $150 toothbrush can give me that a $20 can't … is a bigger hole in my wallet.

        • @ViciousPotato: Philips are offering 28 day trial offer on selected Sonicare so give it a try and feel the difference

        • +1

          @ViciousPotato:

          Google is bad….

I've used a rudimentray AA battery powered electric toothbrush, $20 for years… after the first 2 weeks there was a visible difference.

I've since upgraded to a proper, one, the visible difference isn't as noticeable, but you can feel the difference.

        • @Baghern:

The way we talk about it in the industry: you COULD brush just as well with a manual as you would with an electric - but you probably won't. For the rest of us lazy SOBs, there's electric brushes and water flossers. :)

        • @kwchaz:

I should of been more detailed.

2 minutes properly brushing your teeth manually, isn't going to match the equvialent of 1 minute brushing with an electric toothbrush, though you should be doing 2minutes there as well.

        • @Baghern:

IIRC the studies say that perfect manual brushing will be just as good as an electric, but very few people actually do perfect brushing.

        • @kwchaz:

I'm curious to see what the define that as.

I don't see how the 100s/1000s of oscillation of electric toothbrush can be replicated manually

        • @Baghern:

          http://www.ajodo.org/article/S0889-5406(96)80040-0/abstract?cc=y=

Is one such type of study… quite often though, the study does note that whilst there are improvements in patients with using the electric options, in patients who have very digilent hygiene, there is no difference in outcomes. For the vast majority of people (i.e., 95%+ of the population), they're absolute shite at brushing, so ofc they're going to have a benefit.

    • Ive tried a few OralB ones and this one is very good - worth it. Better brush and Li-Ion batteries. The heads don't wear as fast as the OralB ones. A Waterpik is good too (as well).

  • Just bought in Costco VIC the Platinum version for 127.99AUD this is a good price and a Great toothbrush.

    • that's a good one

    • +1

      which Costco ?
I have only seen $169 for toothbrush and flosser.

      • Costco Moorabbin

Good price for this toothbrush! I would stay away from this model. It's not reliable. 2 major issues
    1. The water will leak into the power button after 9months-14months of use
    2. If u accidentally dropped it hard, it doesn't work anymore

I have been using Oral B electric toothbrush for years, no major issues at all. Eventually the battery life shorten, that's about it. I have replaced the Philips toothbrush 4 times in 3 years. Dropped if one time (my fault!) and all other 3 times was bad design!

    • I've had mine two years and not had an issue… :/

  • +1

Ive had mine for over 4 years. Love it. Feels amazing on the teeth, hasnt skipped a beat.

  • Costco are offering Philip's two year local warranty so I have nothing to lose.

lol at ppl spending this kind of coin on a toothbrush.

it really is a scam and will make no difference

for good teeth you need three things, in this order

    1) good genes

    2) limited sugar and acids in your diet

    3) brush at least once a day, and floss whenever you feel stuck foodstuffs

brushing and flossing after every meal and visiting a dentist every six months is not necessary unless you have existing issues.

dentists and companies who make dental products tell you otherwise because money

    • -1

I'd replace #1 with 'things inherited from parents' as you can inherit some pretty crap bacteria from them too - the vertical transmission of oral bacteria often occurs when parents test baby food temperature then place it straight into the baby's mouth.

2 would be best for 'carbohydrates' in general as the bacteria can also digest them.

3 floss more regularly as not flossing is like not washing between your fingers

Visiting six monthly recommended if you're doing a shite job at brushing (most people are, they don't brush nearly as well as they should and there's plenty of buildup), and or living in an area with high mineral content in the water (plaque mineralises much quicker, at which point it's recommended to brush thrice daily to get the plaque off whilst it's still soft).

  • If you're heading to the US and you're a Costco member, they have the two pack in their warehouses for $149.99 plus tax and regularly have a $30 rebate which they do currently - http://www.costco.com/Philips-Sonicare-FlexCare-Whitening-Ed…

Over the years I've bought Sonicare toothbrushes in Hawaii and have had no issue with returning them here in AU if I've had an issue which I have had only on one occasion.

  • Thanks, I've bought 3 for my family.

  • Thanks, i have been waiting for this, i think cheapest offer so far

  • Not sure what is meant by "Please be aware that this product comes with a TWO-PIN UK PLUG". All UK plugs have 3 pins though often only two are used (live and neutral).

Unless it comes with with a shaving socket plug (two round pins I believe)?

    • i am not sure but i think it refers to the 2 round pins
but i have many plug converters….

this video shows it comes with the round pins as well
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGGeXI65aNc

      • Yes that's a shaver plug which is the same as a European mains plug.

  • Before u purchase, just be 100% sure that there is an easy option for warranty WHEN this product stops working. I'd say over half of them sold have come back as warranty - Phillips have done nothing to fix this. Make sure you're covered, and buy it (as its a good price)..

    • UK purchased Philips products don't have warranty in australia. if someone buys from this deal they will be left without warranty it product fails.

      • The product will fail.

        • u r right, they are known to fail before 2 years, warranty v important

        • +1

          @Bargaingeek:

Yup, you made the right choice buying it from a retail shop in Australia - just keep your receipt and you'll be fine. Usually I am not skeptical about products failing, but I know for a fact (and I've seen dozens) that they fail, so good luck to those buying from overseas.

  • This is an amazing deal, unfortunately just purchased it for $220 on bing Lee eBay offer. Wish I waited, but at least Iget Ozzie warranty.

This deal is the best I have seen for diamond clean, only disadvantage is UK plug and no warranty since Philips won't cover UK purchased tooth brush.

If u didn't buy don't think twice this is a really good deal, diamond clean is hands down the best electric tooth brush out there

    • thanks for bringing out the warranty issue.
i've bought something on Amazon UK before, and then I mailed it back for replacement
they did not charge me anything for that
i am not sure how this toothbrush works, but i'll try to ask Amazon.

  • the deal has been expired and now it shows £100
