NBN FTTN Speeds

Since i'm finally getting NBN activation next month, wondering what kind of speeds to expect with FTTN. Are 100Mbps plans just luck of the draw to the condition and distance of your copper? My closest green box would be 80-100m in a straight line.

  • I'm in a similar position. I'm going to get an ISP where I can down grade plans without penalty if I can't achieve the full speed.
To be honest, I am more excited about the boost in upload speed, as that is usually the bottle neck for me.

  • you'll get the advertised speeds, i went with telstra purely because of congestion issues. i can pretty much expect these speeds 24/7

the switch in my room just impact the speeds abit but nothing to worry about.

my brother who is Telstra modem—->pc gets 98Mpbs

while im Telstra modem—->switch——>pc as shown in the link above.

EDIT - im on the 100/40 plan

    • you'll get the advertised speeds, <<< OP could be 100m from the node but that doesn't mean his copper run will be 100m so not everyone will get the advertised speeds.

      • +1

yea sorry misread thought it was FTTH, just woke up at the time haha.

  • Am on 100/40. Always above 90/30 so far. Most of the time its about 98/38

    Edit- With internode

  • I'm in a big apartment building, and I get excellent speeds. Ping of 14 ms to Australian gaming servers, and torrents can download at over 1 megabyte a second, which is pretty good. I can stream YouTube at 1080p without buffering. This is all on the 2nd cheapest NBN plan with my ISP.

  • With Internode, on an FTTB (same tech as FTTN except all in the same building) NBN month-to-month service, about 60 metres from the building's telecom area in a straight line, and:
    * on a 100/40 plan we got actual speeds of 82.36 / 36.04 with 8.2ms ping, according to speedtest.net, using average of 6 tests over a month.
    * on a 50/20 plan we get actual speeds of 45.85 / 18.48 with 7.3 ms ping, according to speedtest.net, using average of 3 tests over 2 months.

Prior to NBN (with ADSL2+ and standard voice line) we had problems with crackle on our voice line & with ADSL dropouts, and had Telstra out to fix it 2 times, but it was never really solved. So I think our phone line in the building is not great, hence why we don't get closer to the max speeds. I called internode about this, and they said there is testing process you can go through, but the almost certain upshot will be that it's just the max that the building's internal copper line can support.
