Kogan Backlit Mechanical Keyboard with Cherry MX Brown Keys $71.10 Delivered

680
DEALTIME

Its been here before but not this low I don't think. $71.10 delivered using the code DEALTIME. Its a decent Mechanical keyboard using genuine Cherry switches. I'm not sure how long the code works, site says "limited time".

Blurb from the website:
The high-quality Cherry MX Brown mechanical key switches require less force to activate than regular, rubber membrane keys. Type more lightly and accurately while gaming or typing documents, thanks to full n-key rollover, which prevents ghosting and unplanned keystrokes.

The Kogan Backlit Mechanical Keyboard is your partner in gaming sessions, too – the programmable macro keys let you execute complicated commands on the fly and the Gaming Mode switch disables the Windows key and eliminates unplanned trips to the desktop.

The Kogan Backlit Mechanical Keyboard also features 11 backlight settings, including a breathing mode, so you won’t strain your eyes in any light, even those late-night gaming sessions.

Highlights:
- Cherry MX Brown switches
- Full n-key rollover
- USB 2.0, headphone and mic ports
- Fully-programmable macro keys
- 11 backlight modes (NOT Programmable)
- Gaming mode switch

I purchased this for $73 on the 18th of May, no voucher code. All they've done is put the price up for the code so it seems you're getting a bargain. Sure it's a cheaper price than I paid, but only by $1.90.

Haven't had much of a chance to use it but seemed sturdy enough, the keys had a very nice feel to them. Now if only it didn't have that large 'Kogan' branding on it, but nothing a bit of black tape can't solve.

    • It was like $120 a few weeks ago though - I also bought it at the $73 price point and am pretty happy. Bought another for my wife.

      • +4

Wasn't saying it's not a good keyboard or it's not a good price, but they've put the price back up to $79 and added the code, where for the last 2 weeks or so you could have just bought it for $73 instead. Probably done that for most things on the site, so everyone has the perception they're getting a better deal than they actually are.

Just the usual Kogan tactics (like what DSE use to do, funny how they now own the DSE online store now haha).

You bought your wife a mechanical keyboard? That's 21st century romance for you. Does the keyboard improve her response time? My wife takes ages to do stuff. ;)

hi guys, is this the same kb as the $200 armaggeddon-stealth-raptor-mka7? https://www.mwave.com.au/product/armaggeddon-stealth-raptor-…

      • +1

        Yes

        • +7

Far Out. Bought. I got the smaller Tenkeyless version for $63. Based on the Black Hornet MKA-3 apparently, which is selling locally for $145. Been using Windows 10 Onscreen keyboard for the last 48rs as my sidewinder X6 died. Perfect timing. P.S. This reply took 4 mins to type.

      • Crazy isn't it.

  • +10

If anyone is interested in this, they are actually re-branded Stealth Raptor MKA-7 keyboards and the Tenkeyless are Black Hornet MKA-3. I have the Tenkeyless version of the keyboard and I am quite happy with it.

For the Tenkeyless, you can take the top off and use it without the Kogan logo sort of how like the Corsair mechanical keyboards look. Or you could even plastidip the top cover a different colour like I did. Here's a review someone did on Youtube, they even showcase the keyboard without the cover.

    • I don't know if it's still the case but the software supplied by Kogan was a very old rebranded version of the MKA-7 software as well so it pays to download the latest from the links Moneybaby provided as well instead.

As for the keyboard I have had one since early 2015 and have no complaints at all with mine.

    • +2

Cheapest price on Statice for the Stealth Raptor is $179 with most other shops over $200. Why the price discrepancy with the Kogan I wonder?

    • Thanks for linking that vid. Will keep an eye out for an MX Blue variant. Glad the top cover comes off so easily.

      • +1

Kogan only sell the Cherry MX Brown variant

I've been using this keyboard on my home machine since the start of 2015 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175973), and have been very happy with it.

It feels very similar to the iKBC F-104 I'm using at work (also with Cherry Brown's), but also has wanky backlighting (which can be turned off) plus the USB port which comes in handy :)

  • Kogan quality, Kogan branding, Kogan "discount" price

  • -5

lmao you might as well buy a RGB aluminium mechanical from china for the same price or less.

    • +2

While there are great options from China, almost all of them don't utilise Cherry MX key switches. I don't particularly care about the full sized board, but the tenkeyless Kogan board is one of the best mechanical keyboard buys you can get, since it does have the MX switches, and doesn't take 4 weeks to get here. Also, the tenkeyless one looks great, and has a tonne of options in terms of customisability, and is quite a solid keyboard.

Furthermore, most of the 'RGB' Chinese boards are legitimately RGB. They just have multicoloured rows, which imo looks quite cheap.

Although if anyone wants a mechanical keyboard from China, grab the Ajazz AK33, which can be safely acquired off ebay. Great keyboard :)

      • -3

The Motospeed Inflictor is true RGB of several modes with Outemu switches which are decently reviewed. It also has an raised aluminium frame which makes it easier to clean, and a very minimalistic sleek look. All for $65 or $47.99 usd from banggood. I've learnt from my last mechanical its better to go all out than to compromise with this Kogan keyboard that can't compete in price anymore with the cheap keyboards coming out from china. Either go all out and get a Ducky or Corsair at the very least or buy a Razer Blackwidow Chroma equivalent at 30% of the cost with the only compromise of software.

        • +1

So you own the Kogan keyboard to pass on the above opinion? Also how does keyboard warranty work with Banggood?

        • @dreamscene: Good quality keyboards don't need warranty.

        • +1

          @shot: lol. Nutter.

  • +2

I have this keyboard and i like it , its very sturdy and for the money a very good first mechanical keyboard , i also have the logitech G710+ …… still not sure which i like best..

  • It's a great keyboard for a great price.

That said I wish it came in Cherry Blue, otherwise I owned one a while ago and was pretty good.

I'm using a CM Quickfire Blue as my daily driver from Amazon back when we had an exchange rate with the $USD.

  • Any one know if this is the best price your going to get for a half decent mechanical keyboard ?????

Also are Cherry MX Brown Keys close in noise level compared to a "normal keyboard" ?????

    Thanks

    • +1

      IMO yes and yes.

      http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduc…

"The most popular type of tactile, non-clicky switch is the Cherry MX Brown. This switch was introduced in 1994 as a special ‘ergo soft’ switch, but quickly became one of the most popular switches. Today, the majority of Filco keyboards are sold with Brown switches, as the switch is a good middle-of-the-road option appropriate for both typing and gaming. They are also ideal for typing in office environments, where a clicky switch might annoy some."

    • Noise is not "Loud", not clap clap clap noises like a typewriter, but it's not silent - there is still a small amount of noise to it

It's like when you are in an office waiting for someone to key something into the computer, and you can hear them typing away as you wait silently.

      It's nothing unreasonable.

Good price, I can't stand keyboards without number pads though.

      • +1

i am using a keyboard drawer with a full size keyboard, and it's just a little bit too small for both the mousepad and the keyboard

    • +1

      SOLD OUT.

  • +1

40% is the new cool. Can't imagine having a full size…

    • After using 75% (which is my personal preference), full sized boards are amazingly large lol.

  • Lol, paid $79 for it last week. Due to arrive Monday. Oh well.

    • Suckers

  • +1

Great offering. I have a mechanical keyboard from Kogan, my first, is solid. Pretty sure is virtually identical to more expensive options, just labeled differently.

  • +3

This is the exact type of Mechanical KB that I've been looking for. Curse you OP for making me spend money.

    • +5

      My work here is done.

  • +4

Once you go clack, you cannot go back.

  • I got the same one for $49 a year or two back, it's decent but I prefer my filco blues when at home

  • I used nail polish remover to try and get rid of the logo but it smudged it and made it look like crap. Glad there's the cover remove trick.

  • I own this keyboard

WARNING: It has driver problems and even when you install the drivers in games such as CS GO and gta 5 when you hold down 'w' to move forward it doesn't respond or is really jumpy, laggy, jittery call it what ever you want. Tried a million things played around with settings nothing solved it.

    • +2

      Hey mate,

This is easily fixed by holding the FN key and pressing F2 a couple of times, which will max out that setting. And it will be fine. It was either the polling, response, or repeat rate, can't remember.

When you search 'Kogan mechanical keyboard fix', it can be found in the tenkeyless version video.

I really think this should be mentioned in the description, as I know many people here will have this problem, and will come back to this deal.

      • hmm i recall trying that and it didn't do the trick, i'll try again though

    • can confirm its the polling or repeat rate. had same issue

      • there is no repeat rate in drivers settings must be repeat settings in windows settings, tried that though didnt work

  • Was about to pull the trigger, but it won't let me check out anymore because it says "out of stock" (although the page itself says "low stock").

  • +1

Sigh, need more of the tenkeyless.

  • Bit late now, but for future reference… can the macro keys be used on machines without the drivers? Eg: linux systems.

    • Some of them works and some don't. (e.g. the volume control scroll doesn't work probably. Almost uncontrollable.)

      • Thanks door999mo. Can you create your own basic macros like up, down, space, space (I assume you'll need the software for this) and then plug it into a system that doesn't have the drivers have use that macro?

        • I cannot find a way to set macros in linux so they are basically useless.

Also I don't think the macro commands are stored in the keyboard so they can't be used without driver.

Gaming mode works. Basic function keys all works (e.g. play, pause, vol+, vol-, etc)

        • @door999mo: Thanks.

  • Great keyboard, have taken off the plastic cover and its a really smooth and compact TKL.

Love it, and its comparable to some of the higher end mech keyboards. Its no HHKB or poker, but those are a different kettle of fish. For 75$ you really can't go wrong.

  • just got mine today, fast delivery

    • When did you order yours mate?

      • On sat when the deal posted

        • Damn. Lucky. Ordered same time as yours. Mine is stuck on Shipping information approved by Australia Post since Monday. Oh well, a few more day's with my trusty Onscreen Windows 10 keyboard. Sigh.

  • Bought the tenkeyless version. Did anyone have any problem with their escape keys? Sometimes it stuck when pressing down.

  • Mine was delivered on Friday. I purchased the TenKeyless version. Apart from getting used to the 'Mech feel', it is an excellent keyboard, Kogan brand or not. Great buy. No issues with any of the key's apart from trying to used to it.

  • Keyboard delivered yesterday and I really love it. It's so heavy and I'm really liking the "click" and feel of the keys as i'm pressing them.

  • Hey, very silly question but anyway:

My K/B arrived, I played with it for a bit then installed the MKA-7 drivers. Seemed to work fine, but now my keyboard is stuck in 'gaming' mode, where only a few keys work. Is there a key combination to get out of it, or do I need to do some sort of reset?

    • Looks like the same keyboard alright just no buttons or jog wheel in the top right corner, oh and the small markup in price :)

I've been happy with mine so far, the only disappointment is that the WASD and arrow keys (Orange keys) don't reduce in brightness along with the Blue keys.
