How are you feeling about your XB1 purchase?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what X1 owners thought about the system. I imagine there are more than a few people here who have had one for awhile and I was hoping to get some perspective and anecdotes about what people thought of the system. For example: Do you like the exclusives? Do you use it for more than just gaming? If you have the Kinect SKU do you use it? Do you use the backwards compatibility and if so how do you like it?

  • I was fortunate enough to win one, so I guess I can't exactly be too negative on it :) That said, media playback sucks, known issue means that for some audio codecs it just plays in 2.0, instead of 5.1, so had to go back to my WDTV for media.
Quality of the games looks so much better than my old 360. Auto-download of purchased games is handy, can start the download at work, and it's ready when I get home. Backwards compatibility - really haven't played many games on that, mainly NBA Jam lol, can definitely hear the fans winding up when it loads, must put more strain on the system. Otherwise is fine.

    • Hi Spackbace, thanks for your input. I'm just wondering whether you own any other consoles, including handhelds, or have a gaming PC? I only ask because I have a PS4, Wii U, PS3, 360, a gaming PC running an AMD R9 390, and a few handhelds (yeah, I am kind of a video game nerd) and the only reason I would buy an X1 is to play their exclusives. I also think Microsoft is going to unveil an Xbox One slim soon, perhaps at E3, so I'll probably wait until then to buy.

Edit: oh, and how did you win one?

      • Don't have a gaming PC unfortunately, though used to PC game, no time to bother spending the money on it now.
Just had an X360, and a Wii that hasn't been used for a while, even after soft-modding it lol

Won it through a Domino's Pizza Mogul competition :) The Halo console, makes Halo sounds when you turn it on and eject the disc :)

      • -3

Not a gaming nerd unless you own 80s 90s consoles and still play them also to nerd up your quals have a mame machine hot and loaded with a couple hundred roms ready to go.

        You are just a gamer.

        • I don't know why so many people fetishise the older systems. They had some good games but most were shit and trying to go back and play them is often an awful experience. I've completed all of the most popular titles, why one has to keep going back and playing them is confusing to me. Must be some hipster credibility thing or something.

The recent revival of the 8/16bit aesthetic has also pretty much worn out its welcome.

        • @Juddy:

Back in the 80s and 90s gamming was growing at an unbelievable rate, and those 2 decades showed so much potential of developers and there are so many great titles to have ever come out.

you need to understand that what you see now never would have happened if it wasnt for the great minds and devs to make it happe…. understand the history of gaming and how it became.

If you really have no interest in heritage then again you are simply a gamer.

        • +2

          @Hotkolbas:

And you're being elitist. Your reasoning is like arguing if people don't watch old back & white movies or silent films then they can't be true cinemas buffs. Do I also have to listen to music from the turn of the last century to appreciate music, too?

I understand and appreciate the old school well enough, I just don't look at it with the rose-tinted glasses so many others do. My attempt to be more objective about the different eras; their pros and cons, is worth more than just going "I play all da games from da old skool, ain't I awesome?"

And I am not sure why you're so fixated on this idea of categorising one person simply a 'gamer' and another something else. Do you have some hierarchy all sorted in your head? With you no doubt occupying the highest echelon?

        • @Juddy: Agreed. I own most of the older consoles. But they're mostly there for nostalgia. They look awful on modern TVs so I don't have them plugged in anymore, even if I did, they'd be gathering dust.

I agree that the 8 bit aesthetic is getting tiring now. It seems more short hand for 'can't be bothered doing proper graphics' then an artistic choice.

        • @Juddy: I think it is important to have an understanding of where games came from, if you consider yourself a true videogame geek/nerd/fan etc. Though, saying you need to own any number of the hundreds of home consoles that have been released over the last 40ish years is ridiculous and sheer wankery. Rather all you need is an appreciation that there were games before 2005 that influenced the way the interactive entertainment industry works now.

To refer to your analogy, if I met a person who described themselves as a "massive cinema buff" and they hadn't seen movies like The Great Train Robbery, A Trip to the Moon etc, I would be a bit suspicious of their self-proclaimed "buff" status.

        • @johnno07: They could be a modern cinema buff. They could be a sci-fi buff. They might love gangster films and have an encyclopedic knowledge about them.

Ultimately, who cares? I'm not all that interested in what some poser decides to designate me based on their entirely arbitrary standards.

    • agreed on most of this - just go get one, they are pretty cheap now and youll get $100 plus back if you have a 360 to sell

Can just use plex for media?

      • I tried Serviio, but it's the playback capability and I don't know if Plex will fix that.

        • +1

not sure…plex is just a sweet software to use, it 'just works'

give it a shot - its totally free and easy to set up

plays nice with chormecast too if u have another tv in the bed or spare room etc

  • +3

I feel quite warm - even moreso the closer I am to it

    • Good heater?

      • +1

AMD CPU+GPU, always gonna be a good heater :')

  • I don't mind mine, purely as a console I wouldn't really consider it too much of an upgrade over the 360 (which IMHO still has some legs left in it as a fun console with the benefit of a huge catalogue of available games)…that said, backwards compatibility has been great, lots of my 360 titles were instantly available too, so my repertoire of immediately playable games was great.

With regard to the XB1 exclusive titles, I bought mine mainly for Halo MCC, which I must say is IMHO the best value for money deal on the market…the remastered versions of 1 & 2 are pristine, 3 & 4 were quite reasonable entries (despite what the neckbeards would have you believe), and ODST as DLC for $6.65 was money well spent. I was pretty nonplussed with Halo 5; I make no bones about that; but others have seen the positives with it.

I use mine for some Netflix/Stan/SBS/ABC playing, but other than that I've had a bit of trouble getting Plex app to work properly, and I don't have time to invest in fixing it ATM, so I also currently use my WDTV for more media streaming…

Ultimately, if I had a 360 already & didn't want any exclusive titles, I wouldn't bother upgrading…but as a standalone console purchase, I reckon the XB1 represents great value for money. The modest outlay for Gold is also well worth it, especially with backwards compatibility which means even if you disregard the value of online play, you still get access to four new titles per month for $45-50PA.

    • Cool. Thanks for the reply.

I want to play Sunset Overdrive, GoW4, Halo, Crackdown 3, Cup head.

      • No prob.

Yeah, I'm pretty chuffed about GoW4 as well, I'm really enjoying UE too, that's another nice remaster job for XB1…plus the free downloads of 1, 2, 3 & Judgement for playing before Xmas was a sweet bonus! :)

I hope you grabbed Sunset Overdrive whilst it was on GWG last month, that's a nice little addition to the library…I'm still getting used to it, the gameplay is a little bit different to what I was expecting, seems like a pretty fresh approach…perhaps when I have a little more free time to devote to it I might like it more…but that said, I can't say that I dislike it either, only time will tell! ;)

    • +1

I think we agree almost completely about the Halo series. I quite enjoyed the more personal MC/Cortana story of 4, but was wholly underwhelmed and drastically disappointed by number 5. I looked beautiful - but man - it was just… soulless. Really really disappointed :( After all these years, when it was released for the MCC, I FINALLY played ODST - and loved it! What a surprisingly excellent game!

  • I suppose this is a prelude to E3 where it looks like there will be three new SKUs… and a faster upgraded Xbox.

I know the Xbox is a slow giant tank of thing that struggles to get 1,080p.

However it does have good controllers and the exclusives appeal to me and I feel that there's ok value there especially on their store.

Kinect is a waste of time. Xbox is a pure game machine to me, I have proper media players and I also have a 360 so I dont care about BC.

  • My mate bought a second XB1 instead of a PS4. Crazy.

    • Did the first one crap out or did he just want to get some in house multiplayer going with out having to split screen

      • Wife wanted a kinect fitness thing in another room.

        • +1

Wow. Surely an old Wii or 360 could have fit the bill?

  • +1

I bought the Xbox one 1tb edition for $350 through kogan as I loved the 360, It's a great time waster, I've signed up to Xbox Gold and Ea Sports and get the free games all the time, I also use it as a media server with Plex so overall it's a great purchase.

    • +1

      You're welcome.

      • You also like nuts in your mouth

  • +1

Are the many xbox games that you can't get on PC or Ps4 these days anyway?

    • google xbox one exclusives…

      • +1

Google Universal Windows Platform. Microsoft is fixing to get all their Xbone exclusives on PC (Or, rather, Windows 10) very soon because they're trying to steal the PC market back from Steam and Valve. E3's going to be interesting.

Surprisingly, I'm actually against the move. It makes the console almost entirely redundant for good PC owners :(

        • -2

I'm just so sick of anyone who's not willing to spend thousands on multiple systems missing out on some of the best games just because Sony or MS or Nintendo want exclusives.

        • +1

@mgowen: If there weren't exclusives, then there'd be no reason at all for multiple consoles, and getting all three of the major console companies in one room and tell them that two of them need to stop, is probably not going to go well…

But it comes from a dated exercise where it wasn't easy to make a multi-platform game; consoles all had varying tech and handware specifciations. But now both consoles are virtually identical, it's harder to explain away the technical necessity for exclusives.

I, however, believe that exclusives are a good thing (which is why the current gen upsets me.) If a company forces competitive business, it encourages the others to do the same. In history of the industry, competition has birthed amazing titles like Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Halo, and hundreds more. To roll over and say we don't need competition anymore is how we end up with Tom Clancy's The Divizzzzzzzzzzion (the z's are for how much it makes me snore).

Unfortunately because so much of the consoles rely on dumb non-game features like Skype or Plex or STAAAAAAAAN, they've mostly forgotten about exclusives. I'd say you'll get your wish, and that such a thing won't even exist in the next console generation; considering Microsoft seem fit to just release an Xbox hardware iteration every year to keep up with PC now, I don't know how likely it is that there will even be another generation; at least in the microsoft ecosystem. Which hey, having one console ecosystem in which you never lose your game library is a fantastic idea that gives them a massive edge over Playstation, though I'm worried that, like most things, Microsoft's implementation will demonstrate their ignorance of their own target market. (Like when they had an advertisement for Windows 10 that was about how Windows 10 has big bugs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln5LU532GuY Like, that is some next-level stupidity)

  • its good besides the limited 360 backwards compatibility. They made it seem like all games were going to be backwards compatible. Its only a handful, but there are a MANY games that are great that I cant play anymore unless I set up my 360. Games like Skyrim, Oblivion, Skate 2, COD MW2. These are just a few that I cant play again.

    • give it 12 months or so , they will all be there eventually

      • +1

Yup, it seems like every time I turn mine on there's another BC title or two ready to be downloaded, I'm pretty happy with the service overall.

    • Well apparently it has 189 games so I am not sure what you mean by limited.

      • +4

189 games total. only 52 of them are actual full xbox disc games. the other majority (137 of them) are xbox live arcade games.

There are 952 xbox 360 games on disc.
Only 52 of them will work on the 360.
900 games that are not compatible yet.
Hopefully the list will grow in the future with quality titles instead of more XBLA stuff.

1 in 19 games are currently backwards compatible. That's limited in my opinion.

        • First world problems, eh…

        • +3

@StewBalls: exactly haha. I was once happy with Mario kart and Mario 64. now I need 900+ games.

        • @Ronniefromdashore: Human nature mate, give us an inch… ;)

        • Ahh, I see. Well I imagine they'll add more games over time.

  • Xbox and ps all have exclusive titles. If youre a hardcore gamer you would own both. I wouldnt bother eith kinect

    • +1

which console is (duc khunt)[https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/3722159/redir] exclusive too?

  • +1

I would be much closer to buying one if they remembered any of their old exclusives; Rareware has been assimilated so I'm not holding out for a new Banjo or Perfect Dark game, but for christ's sake guys, everybody wants a new Crimson Skies game! And those that don't actively want one just don't KNOW they want one.

I was disappointed when I found out that Microsoft renewed the Battletoads license only for a Shovel Knight cameo and for the Rare Replay; I would've really liked a new Battletoads game. Plus, I'd like to see a resurgence of the collect-a-thon or adventure genre, so a new Blinx the Cat would be wholly entertaining.

Still sitting on my hands waiting for the new Fable game; which… Well, if they haven't locked Peter Molyneux in the basement yet, then I refuse to raise my expectations back to where they were about 20 minutes before I played Fable 2. They've been upsettingly quiet recently, about that AND Crackdown, so I've put on my sad-hat and I'll keep my eyes fixed on the lower half of metacritic :(

    • I don't know if you've heard of it but Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor of Banjo-Kazooie.Releases in October.

      • Of course; some Rareware employees managed to break free from the amorphous mass that is Microsoft Development Studios, AKA, Bland Icon Rareware and assimilated Lionhead, and could well be making the best videogame of all time. But I still have my money on the fact that the current gen hardware will be too much to keep up with for small, sub-billion-dollar-studios, and once again we'll end up with a game that looks great and plays mediocre. Add it to the massive catalogue we already have for the current gen, eh?

  • -6

XB1? X1? Do you mean XBONE?

    • +5

All are acceptable and can be used interchangeably. Hardly worth bringing up.

  • I love my Xbone, but i had it before i got my PS4 so i might be a bit biased. Having said that the console itself does nothing special that sets it apart from the PS4 and vice versa, the argument comes down to games, if there are enough exclusives that you want to play that you are happy to part with the cash then by all means do so.

Also as far as Kinect, i enjoy it but i wouldn't pay much extra for it, primarily i use it to pause and play video when something comes up and the controller has gone to sleep or is out of reach, convenient but not earth shattering

    • Also when you do the math don't forget to add on the cost of Gold, i got my PS4 with Battlefront like an idiot and had to wait until more money trickled into the bank account for PS plus so i could actually play it so the PS4 sat their like a paperweight for a few days

  • I love my xbone. I use it to watch tv, games and I also have my Mac mini plugged into it as well. I do find the Kinect a bit of a waste although we use it when skype friends and family. Being able to switch between watching tv shows to Netflix/Hulu to games is very easy and a huge plus. Especially for my wife who can be sometimes technically challenged at the best of times. It just means we need one remote for everything. The problem is now that my 1yo boy has worked out how to turn on the whole entertainment system (tv, sound bar are both linked to the Xbox). As for the games I'm not a huge gow or halo fan. I just prefer the Xbox to the ps4. It'd be nice if the digital games were a bit cheaper though. Spose can always go to cd keys for those or get the cheap ms money when it comes up on OB. This site is helpful too. http://www.digitalgamesprices.com/xboxone.php

  • +3

I'm feeling disappointed about my Xbox One to be honest. I'm a multi-console owner, so I generally like to own a console if it has exclusive games which interest me - I don't really give a crap about the resolution differences (though they ARE there - I hate gamers who deny it even more). Consoles stand out for their unique game libraries and are remembered for them. SNES, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox 360 - all had fantastic games you could only play on them.

Halo and Gears of War are two of my favourite franchises from the Xbox 360 era, but I was hoping to see Microsoft provide new first-party exclusive IP that was fun and consistent. Instead I fell for Microsoft's BS trap again like I did with the Xbox 360 (2010 - 2013 for the Xbox 360 were virtually devoid of exclusives not named Halo/Forza/Gears) where they seem to be focusing more on games as a service (microtransactions in Halo 5, Forza 5, etc) and much less first party IP than the competition overall.

We've gotten endless remasters (Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rare Replay), abandoned properties (D4 and all the Kinect software), cancelled games (Fable Legends, Phantom Dust) and now the recent news that all the remaining/future exclusives are also going to PC/are already on PC (Dead Rising 3, Cuphead, Forza 6: Apex, Halo Wars 2, Killer Instinct, Ori and the Blind Forest, Quantum Break, Ryse, Sea of Thieves, Titanfall - all also on PC). A pathetic amount of games (15) can ONLY be played on Xbox One compared to the 360 era, and the list is even less when you take out the remasters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Xbox_One-only_games

Halo 5, Forza Horizon 2 Sunset Overdrive are the only games which have made the purchase semi-worth it. Halo 5 in particular is underrated by the mainstream gaming population, but judging from recent hints from 343i (Frankie on NeoGAF forums) and the rumours going on about all future Halo titles coming to PC, if it jumps to Windows 10 I won't need an XB1 to enjoy Halo anymore.

Backwards compatibility is awesome, but what ruins it is the severe input lag in certain games. I can't play Gears of War 3, Fable 2 or Halo: Reach without dealing with 1 second delays. Despite this, it's one of the few features I think which MS has done well by its fanbase.

Kinect has also been practically abandoned, so it's been a waste of a purchase.

Because I primarily game on my PS4 and 3DS (which both have large amounts of existing and upcoming exclusives), the XB1's value has overall been decreased for me given the utter lack of unique gaming experiences it provides I can't get on PS4 or PC, and the future isn't looking much better. Gears of War 4 and Scalebound are only titles I'm looking forward to from this point on that I can't play on my PC. The wiser purchase, if we're talking about the inner Ozbargainer here, would have been for me to have stuck with the PS4/Wii U/PC combo. That way, I would have still have the widest pool of exclusives from each system plus multiplatform games, and I would only be missing out on what little Microsoft has produced for the XB1 (most of which are now coming to PC).

MS's direction just isn't doing it for me, so yeah I feel just a little bit disappointed that my XB1 purchase has pretty much become a Halo 5 machine, given that Halo: The Master Chief Collection didn't even properly work until six months after its launch, and even now it still doesn't load multiplayer games properly.

      http://www.neowin.net/news/details-emerge-on-slimmer-xbox-on…

Then I suppose you won't be pleased to hear that today Microsoft has all but announced that they're bringing out two more Xboxes this year; the Xbox Mini and the apparent 'Project scorpio', a more powerful Xbone. So now we have a hardware upgrade for a console that hasn't even proven itself over its competitors as a serious gaming device…. Why would I buy something that actively doesn't care about its game catalog and playerbase? But that's besides the point; if there are going to be three xbox ones in 2017, consumers are back to having the crap confused out of them about which to buy for their kids, which is why consoles exist in the first place!! If an oblivious parent or grandparent stumbles into EB in 2018, it's going to be easier to just sell them a PS4 rather than trying to explain to them why there are 6 xboxes and what the differences are.

Consoles were at their most dominant in the PS2 era, when PC builds were getting expensive and you needed to refresh your tech too often, so Microsoft's answer to this is by bringing this level of customer dissatisfaction back to the console market, by releasing a new xbox every year with different hardware specs! Uh.. Thanks, Microsoft?

On the other hand, I found out yesterday that UWP apps (Xbone games on Windows 10) won't have the diverse graphics settings on Steam and other PC games, or capabilities of running multiple graphics cards, and won't support mods (ALL INFORMATION FROM WIKI, don't hurt me!), as a PC user it really gives the UWP ecosystem a kick in the nuts right out of the gate.

  • The biggest value I've gotten from mine is the huge number of friends I now have on Xbox Live that I play with on a regular basis. There may only be a few games that we regularly play together but it's always a blast.

  • I prefer and play my Xbox 1 over my PS4.

Graphically there's no difference between the two as far as I'm concerned (yes I know the microscopic difference matters to some people but not to me).

The exclusive games (Last of Us, Uncharted etc) are generally better on the PS4 but I prefer the XB1 controller and you get much better freebie games on XBL than PS+ (I subscribe to both). I love the backwards compatibility as well. If I'm generally to buy a cross platform game and price isn't an issue, I'll generally choose the XB1 version.

    • -1

lol someone negged me. I guess I hurt some PS4 fan boy's feelings.

      • someones 'microscopic' feelings

to be fair, you have to live in some Xbox bubble to think the differences are microscopic

the ps4 consistently outperforms the xbox, full stop

        • I own both (2 of each in fact), so I don't live in a bubble. I've seen vidoes of them out performing, and there's no real discernible issue as far as I'm concerned.

It's like people who actually think that they can see the difference between full HD and 4K on a 55inch TV sitting 3 meters away. There's a technical difference but the human eye can't detect it. Scientific fact. Full stop.

        • +2

          @SirFlibbled:

True, I rarely notice any difference between my PS4 or XB1 and don't really care about the technical differences only the ones I notice

        • @Japius: Yep. Nobody wants to be the guy who admits they can't see a difference.

        • -1

Just because you dont see them doesnt mean they arent there.

Who are people meant to beleive. You? Or the millions of pages out there that shows a difference exists.

          Come on now.

Here's a stark point that demonstrates the power difference. PS4 is VR capable.

Xbox One is not. Microsoft need to roll out Scorpio to do VR.

          That says it all really.

        • @tonyjzx: Are there different benchmark tests? Yes. Does it actually make any real difference to your experience? Depends on how much you convince yourself it's an issue. 99.9% of the people who think it's an issue likely couldn't tell the difference if you were shown 2 screens and asked to pick the Xbox vs PS4.

If you live in a little bubble where in your head there are big differences, then good for you. For those who don't live in that bubble, that's not an issue.

There's scientific proof about 4K tv sizes and distances sitting near the TV. Most people don't sit within 3m of their TVs or own TVs larger than 80inches and their eyes can't actually make it out but they still think buying 4K bluray players make a difference. Using benchmarking yes there is a difference. But it's all but meaningless to people.

          That says it all really.

        • @SirFlibbled:

I hope you enjoy your Microsoft VR Hololens on your Xbox.

        • @tonyjzx: VR is today's Nintendo Wii. People will buy it and then the headset will sit there gathering dust.

However, if I decide to get excited because Malibu Stacey has a new hat (and because I don't live in a bubble) I could buy the VR kit on my 2 PS4's or on my PC's.

That's the great thing about owning multiple devices, you're not locked in to a single thing and you don't need to spend time trying to convince yourself that there are noticeable differences between the console performances to justify those choices. Or in my case, choose not to buy something like VR.

  • +2

I bought one a few months ago. Upon starting it up, the system had to first download an update weighing in at over 1.2GB before I could proceed. Upon completion and a reboot, another update of about 900MB was downloaded and installed. In all, the setup process took roughly 45mins on my 20Mbps connection. The UI and UX are very reminiscent of Windows 10's modern apps. Navigation wasn't an issue. No complaints there.

The first thing I did was download FIFA 15. I play it on my laptop and only wanted to compare the console version with the PC version. The difference was huge. On my PC, gfx settings are maxed out (the game isn't exactly demanding). Resolution was set to 2560x1440 (I've got my laptop connected to a TV). The experience on the Xbox One was not as fluid as it was on my PC. Frame drops were noticeable especially during celebrations. I laughed at this discovery.

My biggest gripe with it is how the Xbox One is marketed as a 500GB console yet only about 360GB (can't remember the actual figure) is available to the user. How many GBs is reserved for system files I wonder.

TL;DR - I sold it 3 days later and continued gaming on my laptop. Looking to pick up the PS4 as soon as I find a good deal.

    • As a PS4 owner can I offer some advice? I'd wait to see what this a whole Neo situation is. None of the games on the PS4 are going anywhere and you'll either have the advantage of getting a Neo or, if a Neo doesn't interest you, the original PS4s will surely be cheaper after the release of the Neo.

I am thinking of waiting for Scorpio now. I might trade in my PS4 for a Neo when the time comes. I am mostly a PC gamer now anyway.

    • To be fair, all devices from your phone to the tablet advertise a size drive but part of that drive is taken up by the system software.

You may as well wait for a neo, but if you're primarily a PC gamer you probably wont enjoy either console as much. The experiences aren't bad, they're just different and you're either going to like it or not.

MCC is the most fun I've had on my Xbox One. It's a brilliant collection, but it's pretty sad that the best game I own for my current gen console is a remaster. I think PS has the upper hand in exclusives at the moment - particularly with Uncharted 4 being one of the greatest games I've ever played (which I bought a PS4 for).
