A guy details his battle with scammer 'Rob' after purchasing his dream racecar on eBay.
Nice little read. Be interesting to see how things turn out for him.

good read -also bookmarked -all the best to him, hate getting ripped off
Awesome
he just got offered the car. im not sure if he believes it tho
It's been ripped apart though, after he wants to inspect the vehicle.
Also, what the hell is with the seller's CAPITALIZED WRITING LIKE HIS CAPSLOCK IS STUCK?
God damn that hurts my eyes O_o.
" Police Constables Robinson and Raft from Fairfield Police Station were present and witnessed the sellers admissions that; the photographs used to advertise the vehicle were very old, not a current representation of the vehicle; and that the engine and gearbox were removed from the vehicle."
"On entering the workshop I asked that the car be lifted on a hoist, I was told it could not because it was too rusty! A quick look over the exterior of the vehicle revealed considerable rust that was not evident in the images used to represent the vehicle on eBay."
Oh FUN!
Good grief, took me a while to read through but what a saga.
Really got to hope the scammer gets what deserves in court.
Wow, this is why you never pay with bank deposit, also, stay away from eBay for big things, only buy things from eBay like pens, stationary, and fake headphones.
Or simply - dont pay via paypal fora car or any other large item like that which you are going to pick up. You turn up with a bank cheque and pay when you pick up the car. I have bought a number of cars off ebay, but never paid until I saw the car. One had a ding that wasnt declared so we arranged to take it but the price was reduced.
You only pay if the description matches the goods.
Great story and admire his determination wish him well, but lesson for all is dont part with any cash on a car or large item, you are going to have to pickup.
Yeah, there is no way I would have handed over that sort of money before viewing the item I was purchasing. He was way too trusting. If the seller had a problem with the time frame of getting the money then let him relist it. There is no way he would have kept my deposit because I would never have paid him one. Maybe a couple of hundred bucks to hold the car for the time neccessary to show you are serious, but thousands? No way.
I was slightly considering buying a car interstate and having it sent to me as it is far cheaper interstate. After reading this, I'll happily pay the $3000 more and see the car first. For piece of mind, if nothing else.
Thanks for sharing the link. All the best to Matt.
Matt sent this to me via the OzBargain contact form, asking to have his response posted.
Thanks for the link & support… the problem of getting my money back
will be handled by my solicitor from this point on; now I'm looking to make
something positive from this, make the most of the momentum the site has
gained; I’m currently planning to develop the site into a guide for
buying cars (and maybe other expensive items) over the web: dos & dons,
guides for inspecting cars, trusted mechanics/businesses for inspecting
cars, a checklist of things to do right before buying/selling… and
support and advice to people should a transaction fail; possibly even
providing mediation and legal support when purchases are done ‘by the
book’…So thanks again, and dont forget to visit again and sign the new
Guestbook!Matt
