at the risk of sounding ignorant, exactly wtf is an amiibo?

im a casual gamer, even got xbone for xmas, but I just don't understand what they do

    • +5

they are like a physical version of dlc. You scan them onto your wii u or 3ds and they unlock extra stuff in the game (costumes, characters, levels ect). Some are game specific and some games dont support them at all. They are also a cool shelf ornament .

    • +3

And to add on to what ronnie said, they are great to collect

    • +11

      They're Nintendo happy meal toys.

    • Like Lego Dimensions. You buy them, place them on the portal (which is an USB RFID reader I suppose, with Lego bricks), then you'll be able to play extra contents.

    • No really, what do they do??? I'm an Old skool gamer who bought the kids a Wii-U last year.

Recently got my son SSB and bought him his favourite Ness & Lucas today from EB. Scan them on the gamepad, setup the features for Lucas and then??? Lucas is in the game but you can't play him as a character, you fight against him or supposedly with him??? What's the point????? Is it just me, I don't get it?

I get the Infinity (Star Wars) figures they work as you'd think, place on the pad and play as that character.

Also bought Wolly Yoshi, Splatoon figures, They do nothing as far as I can tell.

Is there a guide for these things anywhere the included instructions as useless.

      • They work in similar fashion to Infinity or Skylanders figures, but rather than been used in one game or franchise, they can be used in a number of Nintendo WiiU and 3DS titles. They primarily unlock characters to play but also may rarely have other features (e.g. 8 Bit Mario unlocks features in Super Mario Maker).

Virtually all work with Mario Maker but other games only use a subset of figures.

Potentially more collectible (or at least more wantable) as they depict characters for Nintendo's wide current and back catalogue of games.

      • You can play as lucas and ness. One is a hidden character i think and you have to unlock him first.

        • Checked the offical SSB page and is Lucas an 'additional' DLC as well as Amiibo purchase?

All this newfangled DLC, Amiibo stuff, what was wrong with the Amiga A500 and 3.5" disks?

    • It's a sly profit-driven move by Nintendo in just selling DLC.

Some people collect them for the sake of collecting it, while others buy them to actually use in games.

I'm holding out for the Ryu amiibo to go on sale - have no use for it, just want to decorate my computer :P

    • +1

      that's a perfectly good use!

      • I love that they are collectable as well as having some (generally cosmetic) function in games. I'm really happy with picking up a few characters that I like from the Nintendo universe to adorn my tv table.

    • +2

It's also on sale if you go in store. My friend picked one up at lunch time today for 8.98

      • The Ryu one? Hmm, interesting. I can't see it on the website

        • +4

Yup Ryu. Not all of their amiibos are online. They had a heap at the Adelaide Rundle Mall store.

          EDIT: https://ebgames.com.au/3ds-211304-Nintendo-amiibo-Super-Smas…

You have to take off "ONLINE" from the filter in the OP's link. As the "in store" ones don't show up otherwise

        • +2

The trick is at the top you have to cancel out the 'online' option so you aren't able to get ryu online just in stores but pretty sure every eb I have been too had atleast 1-3 ryus and yes even ryu is 8.98

        • Yeah that is bloody stupid on the filter just found out so now it shows in store but you still need to call to find out if there's stock…

      • Yes, by cancelling out the "online" option, you'll find all amiibos on sale (the super smash bros and super Mario bros waves) at 8.98.

Time to visit my local EB and bring my checklist! Thanks OP.

    • I have mine guarding my N3DSXL in it's dock. Ryu on the right, Shovel Knight on the left.

  • LOL I wonder if they're still valuable in america? Amibos never seem to hit it off with Australian audiences! :(

    • +7

What are you talking about? On their first year, the first 5 or so waves were constantly sold out due to high demand, now most people have them + over saturating the stock all over the country is now why you see stores filled loads with them.

    • +3

They had shortages there, Australia had good supply. But we still sold out here.

    • Well where I lived unless I was very late, all the figures were still in stock. I only bought wii fit trainer and villager because i thought they were rare but I was wrong lol! Now I don't know what to do with them! The only good one I have is the gold mario!

  • i am missing duc khunt amiibo.

  • +3

WOW! They were like $18 a year ago and due to shortage of supply some sold for $30+ on eBay and gumtree. At this price might pick up Ryu for decoration as they are better than average loot/toy in term of details and quality.

    • +8

Oh no you don't! That Ryu is mine! rams my car into yours & watches it as it flips and explodes

  • Are these ones on sale?

    Rover
    Roy
    Timmy & Tommy
    Kapp'N
    Isabella (Summer Outfit)

    • Roy is but the rest would be animal crossing amiibos those aren't part of the sale

    • The animal crossing ones are at Target for $10 atm.

      • Not all of them scan at $10 unfortunately.

        • The animal crossing ones only recently went to $10 for our local Target, might be different since last time you went in?

        • @Gecko: Older ones like Tom Nook and Isabelle were scanning for $10, I wanted Mr Resetti though he scanned at $17 from memory, and I was told that the newer ones aren't included. It may vary by store, not sure.

    • I would be all over Rover, Timmy & Tommy and Kappn' if they were included.

  • +10

Am i the only one who buy these just for display?

    • +3

Nope. All mine are still trapped in their plastic prison :)

      • +2

        Same. Even mega yarn Yoshi.

        • I forgot I had one - thanks for reminding me!

    • I use mine in game, but then feel really bad for breaking the seal =\

  • Can someone please let me know if they got Ike, Robin and Lucina? Online store does not have them. I wonder in stores the same?

      • Not anymore too bad I got it from JB hifi, I can't believe Big W or Target don't have them

  • Just FYI they've been $10 at target for ages too

    • +1

FYI $8.98 is less than 10 + this deal includes ones target didn't..

  • RYU is on sale woot! - bought another one even though I still have one in my car unopened.

  • +1

    Sweet
Blacktown has heaps of Roy and Ryu. Gonna pick both of them up :D

I dont know about you guys, i open my amiibos except Gold Mario..

    • Yeah. You have to open them up to play. They dont scan in box like skylanders

    • Lol none of those at all local store. Not available online neither

      • I got mine asap

Someone was trying to hide Ryu, was at a different section at the store haha..

  • I got a ryu and famjcom rob. Cant wait to play them tonjght
