Aldi 3D Printer - Would You Recommend It?

I haven't used a 3D printer before and I have a few questions.

  1. How easy is it to get set up?
  2. Can I print models that I've created in Solidworks?
  3. What is the print quality like compared to other printers in a similar price range?
  4. Are there any simple and inexpensive improvements that could be made to the machine?
  5. Does anyone have photos of ABS prints they have made with this machine?

I want to get into 3D printing and I have the opportunity to buy one of these Aldi printers for $400, but I'm torn between buying the printer or just using sites like Shapeways.

Thanks!

I bought one, Not sure I'm using it enough to justify the purchase price but it's something cool to own. Never owned/used a different brand so not sure how it compares but I'm quite happy with how it's worked for the prints I've done. I've had no problem using the cheap ebay filaments in it either. ABS prints have been a bit hit and miss for me but I put that down to my inexperience printing with it rather than any fault of the printer itself.

Also keep in mind that almost the exact same printer is available on eBay for $330 so I'd say unless you get the receipt for warranty/ACL gurantees it's not worth buying one for $400. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Print-5-materials-Geeetech-Reprap…

    • Cool, thanks for the response! Do you know what the differences are between the Aldi printer and that one on eBay? I assume there must be some significant differences because that printer on eBay is $170 cheaper than the Aldi printer was on sale for.

I do get the warranty with the $400 printer (I'm negotiating directly with the company that makes them).

  • Also, what's the best place to buy black 1.75mm ABS filament?

  • You also received the email for the $399 price for the refurbished units?

These are most likely 60days returns from aldi.. re-boxed by cocoon with 12months warranty free shipping and a roll of PLA.

Did you end up buying one?

  • Officeworks has a 3d printing service. $3/15 minutes PLA. https://www.officeworks.com.au/print/print-and-copy/3d/3d-pr…
