Should I Buy a Honda Jazz 2002 1.5 with 282k....for $3k? It's auto

Hi.
Need advice for friend who wants a car for her daughter who has just got her P's.

Have read reviews on the Jazz and sounds good.
Owner of this car has bought newer model so that's a good recommendation.

Any thoughts from those who own or know about used cars?
Buyer asking 3.5k but rego expires 3 weeks….
Appreciate advice.
Many thanks,
MsFrugal :-)

  • roadworthy certificate provided?

The Jazz is a pretty decent little car, but 282000 kms is pretty high - sounds like it'll be a bit long in the tooth. Not sure if auto is the best option for that… you'd be better off with a manual to make the most of the engine. Uni friend had one and she had to work it pretty hard, but hers was manual atleast.

  • HI. No, I asked her if she could get a Pink-slip but she said not got the time. however, she has provided name of garage that has serviced car for herself and the prior owner so was going to give them a buzz tomorrow to ask them about it.
    Yes, 282000 Kms.

It's a lot but one of the reviews I read was a 1.3ltr car and someone had done over 300,000Kms with it…and seemed happy.

    Thanks for the input.
Sadly daughter can only drive an auto!

Walk away! Plenty of other cars with lower k's.

        Run away

        • 100% agree. So they have the time to sell the car and sign all the paperwork, but not drop it off for a roadworthy (even if you pay for it?)…. definitely walk away. She knows the car won't pass.

  • Not with that amount of kms. I reckon she'll be fixing it more than driving it.

  • No, too many kms. I sold a 2006 Honda Jazz with just over 100,000 kms for $5250.00 which had 6 months rego, new tyres and in beautiful condition. Was a manual. I have purchased a new jazz - great car. Buyer should provide a pink slip.

  • I have a 2006 Jazz and it suffers from a noticeable shuddering problem when accelerating from stop. My mechanic said it's a common problem with the Jazz. I'm not sure how true that is but just something to consider. Last time it cost us $1000 to get it fixed but problem still came back eventually.

    • looks like the cvt problem.

  • Absolute no,
timing belt soon to be change @ 300k
your head gasket might blow any time
your piston rings probably really warn (poor fuel economy and burning oil)
think of all the other parts that's probably warn.
your wheel beerings, CVs, probably needs new fuel pump soon too!
    gearbox probably require rebuild.
get it dirt cheap and use it as a disposable car or just walk away :)

  • Even for Honda Jazz, 232K sounds aweful. 2007~9 Hyundai Getz under 150K is about $1500 or you can get 1999~2004 Holden Astra under 150K is about $1000 which is even better than Hyundai Getz. I reckon you should raise your budget to 5K and get a decent used car.

  • How I see value on old cars -

To obtain rego itself (rego+CTP+check) is at least $ 1000. Proper comprehensive insurance is at least $400.
Normally I see the car value as selling price taking out the re registration cost.

Selling price is $3k with no rego left. The car itself is better worth $3000.
Definitely not on a 14 years old 300k car.
One mechanical issue will cost you more than the car.

$500 is the most I would pay,

  • I wouldn't trust the CVT with that mileage. I hate the CVT in the older Jazz, the wife has one and it's awful to drive. And hers only has 65k on it.

  • Thank you to everyone for comments.
Looking at something else…. Will no doubt be back for your thoughts.
    Really appreciate input.

    • may i recommend toyota echo.
same engine size.. very reliable.. same price range.

mine has done 260k (110k with me) with no issues.
I do my own servicing on it for about 35 bucks.

mine uses about 5.2l/100 mixed usage with air con.

i guess they are smaller but i once fit 120 linear metres of construction wood in it (2.4m lengths).
i have carted full size doors in it with all doors/windows closed.
if you are very tall they can be a bit taxing.

if you do get one of these, call toyota service straight away to check if it's needed in for a new free airbag (recall).

      anyway happy hunting.

+1 for an Echo, bulletproof car. Might even be a Yaris or 2 that will creep into the $3K budget as well. If you do get one, keep me in mind Clare, I specialise in Toyota audio upgrades, genuine and aftermarket. Makes these older Toyotas like new again with Bluetooth, USB and so forth.

  • 150 K's with a chain, that;s easy to remember, 150KLMS on the clock and a timing chain rather han a timing belt…
