I'm travelling to Brisbane the end of July for one week.
I'm wanting to hire a car for the 7 days I am there.
Would prefer to hire from a mainstream company.
Are there any tricks or lessons to get a decent price on a rental car?

If you have car insurance, sometimes they give you discounts (RACV provides 10% off certain companies).
Other than that, when I went to Brisbane, we went with Avis as I was able to find some % codes to use. (Google <insert company> name coupons/codes)
If you want to use the big companies, I usually find the cheapest is to book through a third party search.

Never get excess reduction from a rental car company, you'll be able to find a comprehensive travel insurance for much less which will cover this as well as other things or consider an annual multi-trip insurance if you tend to take small breaks often.
Thanks guys for all the advice, went with Thrifty in the end and picked up RAC discount
