Is Bangkok a Good Place to Buy a Wedding Dress?

Hi All,

I am considering buying a wedding dress for my upcoming wedding while I am traveling in Bangkok. I only have a few days there but wanted to know if this is a good alternative to spending an unnecessarily large amount (>$3000) in Australia. I would be interested to hear others suggestions on good places in BKK to do this or alternative websites I could look at for this special occasion.

If you can find a dress off the shelf that meets your needs then by all means you can save a mint. They will tell you they can make alteration and mail it to you but that adds to the risk. I do most of my shopping at the MBK, however the prices are inflated for the city, but still so much cheaper than Australia. Its a safe place to shop, if you want to save money you need to start heading into the back streets etc and bargain like crazy, mbk you can bargain but not so much.

    • Thanks for your reply. Can you recommend the store names you went to in MBK? Also what price would I be looking at as a comparison ?

      • Sorry I dont know the stores by name, I just know where to find them once I am there. I have never been wedding dress shopping there before so I can't be sure on prices, but as a rule of thumbs it should be around 1/3 the price of what you pay here. Keep in mind quality control and brand names are hard to spot, you really need your wits about you. Another thing is the sizes, my wife is usually an 8/10, over there she was an XL …. which she refused to wear anything with XL on the tag. So unless you are already tiny you may struggle to find something off the shelf. Worth a look just keep you expectation in check

        • I am also around an 8/10 mark in Australian sizes, and I don't care too much about it saying XL lol.
Do you know if they do the fittings there too?

Don't take for fiance, he may decide to buy a wife there.

  • A few days might not be enough to have a dress fully completed.
Also find a dress maker at home willing to do alterations to finish it off.

    • Yeah I was thinking about doing the alterations at home, but just wanted to see if it was a viable option.

I looked it up for you in a local blog. There are lots of shops near Khao San Road as well. For locals they often even go outside Bangkok to get a tailor made dress to save. Many of them promote and deal with customers on Facebook so you can even sus a few of them out first to get some idea (although I am not sure if all of them can write English). If you want I can message you some links.

    • yes please do

Not sure if this is helpful but my partner had some very nice, quality suits made at James Tailor in Bangkok. This was a few years ago. I don't know if they make wedding dresses. But we were only there for 4 days before flying out to another part of Thailand. But we were returning via Bangkok so the tailor was able to complete fittings while we were there and have it ready on our return trip to the city.

One of my girlfriends bought a weddding dress in Asia not too long ago but it was in Vietnam. She saved a fortune!

You might want to check Trip Advisor for reviews of tailors in Bangkok, if you haven't already:
