Whats the best i7 Laptop value out there. I have found 1 that I think is good. Thanks for feedback

I have a new Web Dev/ Graphics design/ app developer staff starting in Philippines. Looking for the best bang for buck for him to use (Instead of putting him on a older 1st gen i7 desktop)
I found this and looks about as good as I can find (Havent really looked much)
I am aware that quality will save mega $$$ in future productivity by giving high end.
Anyone got something else they can recommend under $1000 (Prefer way under)
Thoughts anyone, will buy in 72 hrs.

Thanks in advance for feedback (If I get any)

As a Web Dev person, to be more productive, I do need a dual monitor setup running on SSD hard drives. This is more important than a faster cpu. Lots of ram is also good, for running virtual machines, and/or databases locally and/or dealling with large image files.

You may want to think about replacing the hard drive in the laptop with a SSD and also get your developer a docking station with some monitors.

    • Thanks for info, Already have a 20" reasonably high end monitor there, so dual screen is a definate (personally I like 3 monitors) SSD I agree, but that is another price point, and they will be different enviroment so no server back up other than cloud so need a bit of HDD.
Phil developers are usually given this level of machine so they will be stoked.
Always a risk of stealing, so modest budgets need to be kept.
Someone below asking about desktop vs laptop.
As they will be working on stations that are used for call centre operations on different shift, I need the lappy stored and locked away out of hrs (Cant have sentative info on floor out of hrs)

  • Unrelated, but how much are you paying this guy? Curious to know the rates in the Philippines.

    • There are actually 2 coming on
web dev/ graphics design with about 4 yrs exp 30,000php (about 12% for other rates), After they development something that is classed as a income earner, they will be bumped to 40,000php check xe.com for rates conversion
php programmer and team lead with about 4 yrs exp 35,000php (about 12% for other rates), After they development something that is classed as a income earner, they will be bumped to about 40 to 50,000php check xe.com for rates conversion

      • Per month right? I used to have some Level 0.5 tech support guys in Bangalore for $3 usd / hour. They would basically only be good at the most simple tasks.

An acquaintance of mine had a larger operation and had 2 teams in the philipines. They each knew the other team existed but he was careful not to share the identities. He would then play the managers off against each other and pay a bonus for the manager whose team achieved their goal at the lowest cost. Ruthless I know, but effective at cost control.

        • Im a direct employer so pricing is different, does not include rest of infrastructure (Rent electricity, internet, administration, payroll, recruitment, advertising) costs that wold be on top. My costs would be very different than outsourcing to a 3rd party (unless home based worker direct and their infrastructure would be terrible)

Does it need to be a laptop? You will get better bang for your buck with a desktop.

Edit: the i7 of the Lenovo you linked is pretty terrible. See here, it's dual core with 4 threads, losing the gain of the hyper threading compared with even an older i7 like the 2600

You aren't going to gain anything by having hyperthreading in a lot of web development work. I also fail to see why you think it's terrible for that reason, terrible is more like buying a CPU merely because it has hyperthreading and expecting that to make it act like it has more cores.

      • There's no other advantage to getting an i5 then, especially when it's clocked at 2.5GHz. OPs only requirement is that it is an i7 and I agree with you that he won't need one.

    • Wrote in post above.

  • Looking for the best bang for buck for him to use (Instead of putting him on a older 1st gen i7 desktop)

i7 laptop CPUs are much slower than i7 desktop CPUs. Most of them are only dual core.

To give you an idea: work gave me a $2000 HP laptop. The i7 in it is slower than the $100 (5 years ago) i3 CPU in my gaming rig.

Does it need to be a laptop? Is he going to be working all over the place? An old i7 desktop could be both much more powerful and much cheaper.

  • Appreciate all info, but dont see any links of something I can buy now and why?
Love to see some links to other products.

I have some i7 desktops version 1 there, but need some TLC to bring back from the dead. I assume parts, reinstalls and time spent would be woth more than the lappys anyway.
Hope to see more info if there are other ideas. Current is noted

  • I bought 2 i7 Lappy from JB HiFI today for $950 each (their special is reduced from $1299 to $999)
Not a bad deal for the specs
