NFW would I touch anything refurbed from Gray's …

    • Yeah I've been sucked in a few times by Grays "refurbs", every single product has had a major problem from day one, requiring either a warranty return to fix or was unable to be fixed.

    • I recently bought a refurb LG 55 Oled from Grays's during eBay's 15% Off sale at a very good price. I have had it for a month already and I am quite pleased with it. Telly had no damages or scratches. I will buy again from them.

Once Panasonic, Sony & Samsung get into OLED we will see prices tumble

    • +2

Samsung has gone on the record saying they are not doing OLED TV's.
Sony has its own advanced LED tech, so they wont be doing OLED anytime soon.
      As for Panasonic, no idea.

Decent price for an (apparently) amazing TV.

    • Price is largely due to so much waste in the manufacturing process. They throw out (or keep, cant recall which) 30% of the panels as they just dont make the grade. Its that difficult to make OLED. As MajorGaz says, a few have played the game and left, and are now focusing on their own alternatives.

OLED might be like HID lights, or DVD, its an awesome short lived tech due to better tech on the horizon.

Better tech than OLED on the horizon? Care to elaborate further?

As far as I know, the only better tech (in term of form factor) is Flexible OLED.
Nothing surpassed OLED quality so far. All other future display tech is still only on research stage.

LCD with Quantum Dot is not better, it only surpass OLED in peak brightness, nothing else. OLED still ahead in term of overall picture quality.

        • A proper Quantum Dot display, not LCD with Quantum Dot films like current ones.
At least, that's what Samsung is going for, I've heard from a rumour.
Though now I re-read what you've wrote, probably not on the horizon, as they still haven't managed to mass produce it I believe.

          http://www.androidauthority.com/quantum-dot-vs-oled-explaine…

        • That would make it the horizon. A long way to go, but they know where they are headed.

Seriously, do you really think Samsung and Sony have no idea what they are doing? Why do you think they left OLED if it was the future? IF LG is still doing it, then that is part of the cost of doing business. You dont run away and let the competition take over.

OLED would be far from the first short lived tech that wowed users at the time.

        • @Tuba: From what I've heard, Samsung tried to approach the TV OLED market with similar tech to mobile phone OLED panels, whereas LG went slightly different way. I kinda heard that that was Samsung's downfall, because while it's better, it's neigh impossible to mass produce at TV panel size at a reasonable level of failure. So Samsung is trying to get ahead of the race by investing on QLED. At least that's what I've heard,.

      • I'm sure the the scale and efficiency will increase and they'll become mainstream in a few years…

Seriously I will be surprised if they can sell 1 in a month. Way too expensive. Human should work together and not buying new technology at premium price but wait. This way manufacturer will be forced to price their products more reasonable.

    • +6

If only it worked like that. If no one bought the "first gen" of a product, they would not have the incentive, funding, or resources to actually make your desired "second gen" product.

nah, see apple for example. how much net profit they got each year. its just too much. i believe if they sell apple products at 75% from current price, nothing will affecting their R&D department and things like that. everything just the same, but less profit. if only we can "teach" them to get just reasonable profit. im not saying they have to do charity. if apple is making loss each year i will support them to increase their prices. but no, they are not.

"If no one bought the "first gen" of a product,"—> then after 6 month they will reduce the price. now is the time to buy (and support them). next cycle, repeat. after few they will understand no one like to get ripped off even for newly announced model and price accordingly. they can choose to release something with premium price and they stay in the shelf for 6 month with zero sales, or release them with reasonable price but people buy them.

I actually think that apples pricing is fairly reasonable. Especially before they jacked the price by 20% because of the Australian~US dollar. Look at the retail prices of most ultrabooks and compare them to the MBA or the iMac compared to AIO windows computers. (I don't own a mac).

  • Wow, tech moves on , eh! Paid exactly this for my Sammy 55" just under 6 years ago.
Unfortunately it's still chugging along well so I didn't get to use the 5 year extended warranty :-)

  • Is the 55" the same as the 65"? just size difference?

I am considering the 55". but it still feels expensive.

    • Yeah I think it is!

  • Around $1k cheaper if you want to go curved: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…

  • I owns a EG910t-55 1080p OLED model.
Be aware that LG OLED have several problems-banding, tint etc. Kind of common flaws for their OELD TV, so if you cannot accept it, avoid it.
Do a bit search then you will see what I mean.
Picture quality is superb though, really good black, and low input lag makes it great for gaming.
If you can accept the "tint" and banding it is a great buy
