Recommendations on Monitor (Mostly Work, Very Light Gaming)

Hi all

I'm looking for some recommendations on a computer monitor. My usage / criteria:

  • Using it mostly work (spreadsheets, documents etc.), emails and web browsing, and maybe some very light gaming
  • No limit on the monitor size, though I would prefer it not to be vertically too short
  • Prefer ability to adjust height
  • Don't require VESA
  • Flexible on budget
  • Prefer I can pickup the monitor from a store (msy, umart, etc.) so I can get it immediately

FWIW I will be plugging my Surface Pro 3 into this.

I've checked existing deals but most are expired (except for this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/247872)

Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated!

    • Thanks Scrimshaw. I take it that 16:10 would be better for work purposes, though is 1920x1080 res a bit too low?

      • 1080p is acceptable for a 24" display. In Windows, high resolutions on a small display means you've gotta tweak DPI to make your fonts into a readable size.

I have a 1080p 12" laptop, and it takes a DPI setting of 144 (screen elements increased in size by 150%) to make it usable.

On a 27" display, that's where you might want a much higher resolution. 2560x1600 or 4K display… but you might have to pay $400~800

I would personally buy an Ultrasharp, they have great solid stands and are fully adjustable. If you can't afford maybe try the LG 24MB65PY for around $350 dollars

        16:10 IPS panel
        1920X1200
        Pivot & Height adjustable
        Display Port

        • OK I see.

I just came across the Dell Ultrasharp U2414H — any thoughts on this one? Most reviews going around seem to be positive

        • @devpress:

Nah that is not as good as the U2412M. $349 from UMART
          http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=U2412M

For 30 dollars more, but you get more vertical resolution. It's an older model but sells for more, because its got 16:10 that professionals are looking for.

        • @scrimshaw:

Sorry what do you mean by vertical resolution?

        • @devpress:

I'm talking about the aspect ratio ;),

          vertical resolution in bold: 1920 x 1200 as opposed to 1920 x 1080

        • @scrimshaw:

Ah ok. Problem is, U2412M lacks HDMI :(

        • @devpress:

I have the U2414H, it's quite nice. If you don't care about aspect ratio, this would be more than suitable. The tiny side bezels make it look really nice. I game on it just fine, as well as more general things.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

Any other recommended Dell Ultrasharps at 1920x1200 with HDMI port?

          EDIT: How about the U2415?

        • @devpress:

The only other one I can find is the U2415, which is a bit more expensive. 16:10 has fallen out of favour a bit since 16:9 is cheaper to produce.
Yeah the U2415 seems like the best option, if you don't mind paying a bit extra for it.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

Do you think it is worth the premium to step up to the U2415, vs. U2414H?

I would prefer 16:10 ratio but torn as to whether the increased vertical resolution is worth the extra $95 …

        • @devpress:

It depends on your own preferences. I'm happy with my U2414H - though I do have two, so screen real estate isn't an issue for me. If you feel like the extra 120 lines are worth your money… (personally I don't, but it's up to you)

FWIW, the U2414H can be found at CPL for $334, and the U2415 for $415 at the same place.

    • What does Response: 5ms, 2ms GTG mean?

      • GTG = grey-to-grey. It's the time taken for the display to change from one shade of grey to another.

        • Thanks

  • I think I've my heart set on the Dell U2414H

Just curious though, what are people's thoughts on the U2414H vs the Samsung PLS 27" as per the deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/247872

    • It's a decent price. The PPI (pixels per inch) will be lower since the screen is bigger, meaning you'd probably be able to see individual pixels. The response time is faster than the Dell, though. The display tech (PLS) is equivalent to the IPS found in the U2414H, and all other specs seem about equivalent - you'd need a more in depth review to tell more about the quality, and I can't find one for the Samsung. For extras, you have the wireless charging on the Samsung as well as FreeSync variable refresh rate, but also the non-adjustable stand. The U2414H has USB pass-through, a better stand and a better range of inputs.

It's hard to compare the actual display quality without a decent review for the Samsung. The Dell reviews quite well.

  • I just got one 23.6" Philips from MSY.
    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/monitors/16610--philips-mva-…
Price is cheap. And MVA panel is good for office.
If you want the 27" size, this Benq would be the best at this price.
