Card for international purchases?

Hello, I have looked at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra… and faintly remember a lot of members praising their 28 degree cards. I just wanted to make sure that the 28 degree card is still the favorite in the community for international online purchases ? The last line in the posted link worries me because I don't know what difference it makes.

New applicant only got “Platinum” card option with min. limit: $6000 (was available as normal card before 2014)

My only requirements are : No annual fee. Good exchange rate. No international transaction fee.

Please guide me on what card I should opt for.

Cheers,

28 degrees card is still a favourite but there are others that now offer advantages over this especially if you are travelling with the card overseas.
Long lost are the days where you had free international withdrawals on the 28 degrees card and you could push the card into debit and avoid cash advance fees =(

28 degrees card is still good for online purchases.

Citibank is another option - Debit card linked to bank account with no international transaction fees on top of the visa exchange rate. Can also use it to withdraw money overseas with no fees.

On 28 Degrees… It's has moved hands from GE to Latitude Finacical.

They sent out a survey recently gauging peoples responses to charging annual fees. People on Whirlpool have also noted that they may start charging to make payments via BPay.

I've previously gone with the 28 Degrees/Citibank Plus combo, but if Latitude eff up 28 Degrees, will look at Bankwest Zero Platinum MasterCard, especially considering the Free travel insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty, which I believe 28 Degrees charges for (well at least the purchase protection, not sure if it offers the other two) if you use the full terms of the card (ie. 55 days interest free).

charging to make payments via BPay

    to pay off the card?

    Annual Fee and I'm gone

    • Just noticed this in my latest statement. Sounds like 95c to pay by BPay :(

The terms relating to the payment handling fee will change from 'A payment handling fee will be charged to your account each time you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for payments made by mail, by direct debit or by BPAY®' to 'A payment handling fee will be charged to your account each time you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for payments made by mail, direct debit or via the Online Service Centre'. The payment handling fees are $2.50 (in person) or $0.95 (online).

      • They now have a direct deposit where you enter your account number and BSB.

It does say that it will take up to 3 days to be processed. It took 24 hours when I tried the other day.

        • Yes but that way you have to give them your bank account details bsb and account number

        • If I have give them my bank details that isnt direct deposit thats a direct debit.

A direct deposit is if they give me their bank details and I place money in that account.

        the wording is horrendous

except that no fee is payable for payments made by mail, by direct debit or by BPAY®

I thought this Does mean BPAY fee is not payable

If all those are payable they don't list any payment methods that are not chargable

It's like they have worded it on purpose to be as confusing/obfuscating as possible.

      • GEM Visa has put the exact same phrase on their statements too

Notice of Variation to your credit contract
Effective from 11th of July 2016
The terms relating to the payment handling fee will change from "A payment handling fee will be charged to
your account each time you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for payments made
by mail, by direct debit or by BPAY® to" A payment handling fee will be charged to your account each time
you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for payments made by mail, direct debit or
        via the Online Service Centre.
The payment handling fees are $2.50 (in person) or $0.95 (online).
The paper statement fee is increasing from $2.00 to $2.50.
This change was advertised in The Australian Newspaper on 10th May 2016.

  • Bankwest Platinum Mastercard :)

  • I agree that the BankWest Plat M/C has very good exchange rates up there with 28D, and BW pays QF points on all purchases wherever you spend the money.

  • Bankwest / Citibank would be better than 28 degrees.

  • Thank you everybody. You have all helped me decide. I have applied for the Bankwest platinum mastercard.

    Cheers.
