How to check if phone is AU stock from IMEI?

I'm buying a phone from Gumtree.

It's brand new and the seller advises that he won it at a competition through one of the 2 ISPs (Telstra, Vodafone or Optus) hence no receipts.
He provided me an IMEI number, but is there a way I can check this isn't a grey import phone and i'm being conned?

Also check if the phone is stolen or blocked:

    • Checking shows my phone is SONY C6663 whereas my phone is LG G3 D855

      • Hmmm.. don't know man.. I checked 2 phones and both of them came up correctly. One is a LG G4, the other is a Samsung Note 3.

then maybe they scammed you. do not buy… unless you want to take risk, the phone is super cheap and working fine (you test before passing $). i tried mine, correctly showing galaxy note 3 N9005

        • its a different person, not the OP you are replying to.

      • checked an iphone…it came up correctly

      • Checked 8 phones in my household-Xperia Z, Z2, Sola, U, 2x Telstra Buzz, a Lumia 520, and a 630 and all came up correctly…looks like you might have got scammed as everyone else said :/

  • Let's hope it's not a GooPhone ;)

if it was a telstra or optus phone it will have their firmware on it - not sure about vodaphone. it will also have it on the box, with the iemi number.

seller cant say which provider he won the phone from, sounds pretty suss to me.
