I used to see great prices on Alubaba, but never dealt with them, due to the obvious risks.
AliExpress fixed all that, by adding Escrow, better than PayPal's:
Often you DON'T need to return goods to be compensated.

What kind of delivery times do you get? I ordered a few items on aliexpress under $3 (and many under $1) and am still waiting to receive them four weeks later.
Sellers are usually mainland China, which I find adds a week or two to the 3 weeks typical of Hong Kong sellers on Ebay. I pay extra for express post on costlier items. So I don't expect quicker than 5 weeks, and wouldn't really be concerned until 8 weeks.
That said, I got a parcel Saturday that was a $60 item ordered 27th April with standard free postage. Under 3 weeks is pretty fast. $15 cheaper than Ebay's best price too.
I've used aliexpress 300+ times.
the problems that I've had with orders (which weren't my fault) I can count on one hand - and primarily involved microsd cards/USB sticks that were way too cheap.
Aliexpress recently changed their search function so that you can no longer search by quantity (some sellers will sell products cheaper per unit in bulk).
also there is no longer the "search by unit price - low to high" regardless of quantity.
or a combination of the two.
Delivery times range from 3-6 weeks.
To summarise:
Problem resolution sucks, PayPal is much better and can claim a long time after.
Shipping is slower than Chinese eBay sellers.
Products slightly cheaper than Chinese eBay sellers.
Conclusion:
Use eBay if you suspect you may have problems, or the device is expensive.
Some of the things I looked at seemed a lot cheaper than eBay, and there seems to be a bigger range of things on aliexpress than on ebay.
Beware :)
MY FIRST BIG PROBLEM WITH ALIEXPRESS…
Just Today, I got a Lenovo mobile (costing ~$140) that's Clearly DEAD.
And its box was opened, before I rec'd it.
I guess i'll be testing the Escrow mechanism.soon…
that must be a really frustrating experience, sorry to hear
i really hope you get your money back
So far, it's chicken+egg:
Me: It won't Charge & (even after hours of attempting to Charge) it won't switch On. One corner of Box was dented-
in, as if it fell from height.
Vendor: If you see damage on box, Don't sign for it; Reject it so it'll be returned to us.
Me: It was shipped in a loosely fitting Greay Bag, and - inside - there was soft foam around the box, so I couldn't
see any damage to box. And, of course, to try to charge it,
& later try to turn it On, I had to sign for package.
Vendor: (tune-in, next time, to "Will he get his Refund?"
brought to you by AliExpress, a vendor, & a buyer ;-)
PS Fortunately, another ordered item was sent separately.
Hopefully, this one will survive the trip & function OK.
(Again, tune-in next time….)
I checked the prices for the laptops and I can assure you can find much better deals on Gumtree, consider also that these laptops are from China (cheaper) so they must be marking up a lot.
And regarding the refund, if the item is not as described you don't get a full refund but you arrange it with the seller.
Actually, I'd prefer a -working- replacement phone…
I've used Aliexpress a dozen times for items $5-$200 in value. No issues.
