Any Cheap Portable Hard Drive Deals?

  I don't think it'll do movies.

  Any HDD will do, it's only USB 2.0. Nintendo recommends a powered drive though.

  I am pretty sure the Wii U will format the drive in a special Nintendo format so you will not be able to use the drive for anything else. Unless you reformat it.

  Also, buy the console and then get the HDD when you need to. Cause the games aren't that big to begin with and discs don't install to hdd.

  Yeah I've already got a Wii U and need a HDD nowas the SD card is filling up and my kid wants me to download Minecraft… I was hoping to be able to use the HDD for movies as well, but was worried that the Wii U would do a special format so I couldn't have movies on it too.

  Would a large SD card do the job?

  You can only use the front SD card slot to store save data for when the machine is in Wii mode, otherwise the Wii U doesn't use it at all. This helps explains the way data management is used on the Wii in more detail:

  The Wii U also accepts USB flash drives to store games. Altough not recommended by Nintendo, they do work and plenty of people have chosen this over an external HD. Get something reliable and discreet though if going this option. I can easily see how it would damage the console if you used a USB drive that suffered from heat issues or a standard sized one that could damage the port if it was ever bumped or is moved around alot.

  Plus, I'm sure you can just re-download everything you've purchased to a new external source if you find what you're using isn't working or if you just run out of space in the future.
