[Netflix series] Making a murderer *spoiler alert*

Hi there,

Has anyone else watched this series? I've been binge-watching it since 3 a.m ( I know , I'm late to the party). I stopped at episode 6 and did a google search because the suspense was killing me andI was gutted to find out SPOILER ALERT that both Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey were found guilty.

I have so many burning questions and was hoping to hear your thoughts. So here goes:

  • Do you believe that Avery and Dassey are guilty as charged?
  • If not, who really murdered Teresa Halbach?
  • Who was the international recording artists who served on the jury?

Cheers,
JJB

I spent ages reading court proceedings on line for Brendan's trial, very interesting. There was a lot more to the Steven Avery investigation than they showed on the TV show. I have no doubt, however, that the Manitowoc County Sheriff's office made mistakes and someone planted those keys in his bedroom. As to the guilt or innocence of Steven and Brendan, who knows, my opinion Steven is as guilty as and Brendan was manipulated by Steven and was guilty but really had no idea.

According to his new lawyer, "Cellphone tower records of SA & TH provide airtight alibi for him. She left property, he didn't."

      • He could have left his phone behind though, couldn't he ? Or killed her, given her phone to Brendan to dispose of and stayed with the body… etc etc.

          True.

I have no idea if he did it. I do think there is enough reasonable doubt not reasonable jury could have found him guilty.

"Seven details left out of making a murderer"

    1. Avery's DNA was also found under the hood of Halbach's SUV… “It wasn’t blood. It was from his sweaty hands,"

    2. Avery was accused of soaking his cat in gasoline and lighting it on a fire, though Avery described the incident as if he were fooling around with friends in the docuseries

    3. Halbach’s tooth, identified with dental records, and a rivet from the jeans she was wearing the day she went missing were found in the fire pit near Avery’s home… Halbach's bones in the fire pit were "intertwined" with the steel belts, left over from the car tires Avery threw on the fire to burn

    4. Halbach had been to the Avery property earlier in the month when Avery answered the door wearing only a towel. She said she wouldn’t go back because she was scared of him… at 8:12 a.m. on Oct. 31, Avery called Auto Trader Magazine and asked them to send "that same girl who was here last time," Kratz said. Avery gave a fake name and his sister’s number to the Auto Trader Magazine receptionist to trick Halbach into coming

    5. Halbach’s phone, camera and handheld device were found 20 feet from Avery’s door, and were burned in his barrel… "Why did the documentary not tell the viewers the contents of her purse were in his burn barrel, just north of the front door of his trailer?"

    6. A bullet from Avery's gun had Halbach's DNA on it.. "Did the cops borrow his gun, fire a bullet, recover the bullet before planting the SUV, then hang on to the bullet for four months in case they need to plant it four months later?" … “If you had to point to one piece of evidence that showed Steven Avery shot her, that’s what it is,” Kratz said. “It’s his bullet from his gun with her DNA on it.”

    7. While he was serving a prison sentence for a rape he was later acquitted of, Steven Avery planned the torture and killing of a young woman … "Avery also bought leg irons and handcuffs three weeks before he allegedly killed Teresa Halbach"

    BONUS:

    • Jodi Stachowski, a former fiancée of Avery's, appeared in the documentary defending him. However, during an interview on HLN's Nancy Grace in January 2016, she said that she believes Avery killed Halbach, she said, "Yes, I do, because he threatened to kill me and my family and a friend of mine." Stachowski also said that Avery forced her to lie to Netflix producers, threatening that if she did otherwise she would "pay for it" and that at one time he had said, "All bitches owe [him] because the one that sent [him] to prison the first time and that [he] could do whatever [he] wanted."

    • Steven's new lawyer said in an interview that there is new evidence that proves her client is not guilty and that she “also intends to prove who actually killed Teresa Halbach. She asserted it is fairly obvious if you review the record of the criminal case.”

I'm thinking it's the ex. His answers while he was on the stand were just too vague. If he was her ex, why was he so involved in the whole search. There's something not quite right with the brother either. He said he was grieving before they even knew that Teresa was dead.[link

Edit: Jodi is clearly lying in that interview. Look at her eyes and all that blinking. She looked and sounded way more genuine in the netflix interviews than in the latest one. She was begging him to be romantic, to tell her he loves her and to ask her to marry him.

      1. DNA Test with Sweat: A condition referred to medically as ‘perspiration’; sweat is a cooling mechanism for the body and help maintain constant internal body conditions. However, it essentially water and dissolved salts and in itself does not contain any cells or DNA — http://www.homednadirect.ca/dna-news/dna-samples-for-your-dn… or any high-school biology textbook

      2. that wasn't left out of the documentary, it was discussed in court sessions, is not evidence of the current crime, however it is somewhat disturbing even for a bunch of drunken Wisconsin rednecks

      3. A single tooth was found — there is no way to match up a single tooth with dental records; the rivet is generic and prooves nothing by itself; the bone fragments in evidence were not demonstrably Teresa's, they were not all proven to be human and they could well have been from the local mortuary or cemetery (https://stopwrongfulconvictions.wordpress.com/2016/02/21/scr…)

      4. He used his sister's name because the vehicle was titled in her name

      5. Supposedly, her remains were found in three different places, and why transport her in her own car if you are disposing of her remains and personal effects (easily planted anywhere investigators like) 20 feet from your house?

      6. Every bit of blood was cleaned in the garage, completely, but Avery leaves shell casings and a bullet with the victims DNA on the floor, also see the same issue with the control test being contaminated by the lab technician, which made the result inconclusive, except for the prosecutions determination to find him guilty demonstrated by his note sent to the lab.

      7. In the 18 years falsely imprisoned, surrounded by convicted felons, you can be sure they engaged in countless off-topic conversations, this is not relevant to this case, and clearly should have been inadmissible.

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst imo is a much better show but i think he did the second crime

    • Thanks. Added to my watchlist.

I think Brendan received extremely poor legal representation by that douche bag and he should have received a mistrial. As for Avery he most likely did it but the conduct of the local police department was disgraceful and no doubt they planted evidence to increase their chances of a conviction

  • Spoiler alert in title please.

    • +1

      Done. Have you seen it?

      • +1

Thanks. And no I haven't seen it… Yet!

  • Based on the evidence presented in court he should not have been convicted, not should his nephew.

But whether he did it? There is very strong circumstantial evidence that he did.

I have watched the whole thing and immediately thought he was innocent, but I really don't see anyone else doing it without showing evidence involvement.

I too watched the whole thing and felt that there was definitely reasonable doubt re Steven, and the videos of the police interviews with Brendan were heartbreaking but having said that, a lot of the evidence does point to Steven.

Do I think Steve and Brendan did it? No.
Would I go alone to the Avery farm with them there? Hell no.

I don't think they're guilty of the crimes they were incarcerated for.

I pretty much said this exact theory to my husband (without having read anything - just watched the series), am glad to see I wasn't the only one thinking along the lines of two parties trying to frame the one guy. It explains a lot of the inconsistencies and seemed pretty obvious to me watching the series.

How did they know that Teresa was raped? Was that only based on Dassey's 'confession' or was there actual forensic evidence?

  • I thought that the other brother/nephew Bobby Dassey, had something to do with it.
Avery may have known about it…..

  • What the…….

Just reading that Brendan Dassey has been released and all charges dropped?????
