Bargain Hunting At The Thrift Stores

I was thrift hunting a week ago and found a nice rl polo jacket at Salvos. Grabbed it for $30 and thought that was an awesome bargain. I'm just asking from people with more experience, when are the best days and time to go to these places to get the best stuff. I Live in Canberra and some weekends I go to tiny's Greenshed but it's almost always rubbish.

I tend to enjoy wandering through vinnies, but have found the prices to be very different for the same kind of things between stores.

Some vinnies staff must think they can sell stuff for prices in antique stores and price their stuff acccordingky

I've found that to be the case with every major op shop.

        • I went to the one in Kiama and almost fainted when I saw some of their prices.

  • I enjoy vinnies stuff too for the novelty items. For some nice props for my photography.

I go any day that I can, but sometimes Tuesdays can be a good day (in theory - haven't really noticed a pattern)
By Tuesday, the volunteers have had time to sort and price the items that have been donated over the weekend.
Also, Salvo's has 20% off on Tuesdays for pensioners/health care card holders :)

Maybe tiny's greenshed is almost always rubbish:( Some opshops are just like that. So, avoid that one.

I don't go on a particular day or time, I just pop in when I'm passing by, & have a look around. Midweek is probably best, as weekend donations have been sorted, & are out on the racks.

    My tips:
●Patience is the key. Don't be afraid to rummage around. Places like Salvos might be set out beautifully, but I find the smaller and more pokey the shop, the more treasures there are to be found.

●Don't go with the intention of looking for something specific. No expectations.
It's probably not a good idea to go looking for a certain item of clothing, as the likelihood is, you won't find it. Most of the time, you'll find things you least expect (eg. different season item)

●Op shop in the suburbs, and out of town.
Suburban town op shops are much more likely to stock great clothes at a more reasonable price than CBD (City) stores. Why?
-CBD stores overheads (rent, wages, rates, bills) are often higher than similar costs in suburbia, and they must therefore price their goods accordingly.
-City op shops usually know their brand names, and will price the labels accordingly.
-Good clothes will be snapped up much more quickly than those in suburban shops.
Some of the best buys are in small-town op shops in remote locations, where good brands go unnoticed.

    Have fun!

This was great info man. I'm taking a lot of notes tomorrow and coming back to the shops this mid week. Hopefully I get some nice treasures. I tend to rummage for things that I can use either for myself, kids or my photography so I comb through a lot of stuff before I'm satisfied. So your suggestions really will help. Thanks heaps

The Green sheds got exposed a few years back for having a secret eBay room where they sold all the good stuff. The info is on the Riotact. They pick through all the good stuff before anyone gets a chance to have a look.

True that, and now they even have a green shed shop in civic.
