Some eBay Sellers Are Crazy - or Maybe Super Rational

Something I notice about my own behaviour that is irrational is that I'll pay for a signature on delivery pretty much regardless of what I send after I sell something on eBay.

Given that a majority of people behave honestly it doesn't make sense to do it when I send a low value item since the occasional person claiming they never recieved it leading to me taking a loss doesn't come anywhere near the loss I take from paying an additional $2.95 for every delivery.

Well a few days ago I had a $600 pooter delivered with no signature lel. So if I was a dishonest sod I could turn round and say where is it?

I guess you'd have to look at your sales and "lost" items rate history to really make a rational decision about what price makes sense to add a signature on delivery to. But damn would I have trouble sending a $600 item overseas and not require a signature lol.

What do other eBay sellers do? Do you always pay for a signature or sometimes pay for a signature depending on price or something else?

pod isn't required for seller protection.

    • Oh right.

So does that mean that SOD is basically pointless if your covered by that?

well it depends on the item and the seller. sod does give sellers a warm feeling that an item of value has been delivered, and with some assurance that a name and signature was captured.

we don't pay for sod (so to speak). the carriers we use sometimes include sod as standard. we prefer to use carriers that don't provide sod because they tend to offer cheaper shipping. so yeah, sod is pointless for us.

Don't think I'd like to front the girls at my local post office signing for that, lol

    • 0.o

  • I bought from an eBay seller that didn't properly validate her account. I received the product in a few days and the PayPal funds bounced back to me after a month.

She messaged me asking if I could send her the money. I could have easily said no and kept it.

  • But uhh… isn't the tracking number proof that you sent the item? Much of the time you get a tracking number anyway (you can also request a roll of tracking barcode stickers at Australia Post for free, if you want to keep your own).

You plug the number into ebay and it automatically lets you track the progress of the item. Once it's been picked up the status will change to 'delivered'.

    • Not sure to be honest.

I should have asked her it it was ATL (Authority To Leave at the property if no one answers the door) as well lel.

  • Doesn't the seller only need proof of shipping? Ie. A receipt with buyers post code from the post office or tracking. Proof of Whether items arrive or not is not sellers problem, though of course it is if seller want good feedback.

  • Pls stahp lel and lol.

  • Pretty certain sellers are covered if they provide tracking info, doesnt have to be SOD

  • Ehh, if I'm gonna steal something I'd rather not do it from someone who has my name and address
But if its a business, I'd be siding with super rational. Like how amazon will just post out replacements rather than making you return items.

ebay seller here (6k feedback), I send anything over $30 via parcel or with registered mail which has tracking.

If the buyer says not received and opens a dispute, the tracking info (saying delivered) is enough proof from the seller to win.

Anything under $30 is always a gamble, but generally people are honest and I've only being scammed a few times, just block them and move on.

do you lose one in every 11 articles that you ship?

      • Wouldn't higher value items be more likely to get "lost"?

Just realised 'pooter means computer and not some sort of sewage like device.

    • Me too, I did wonder, lol

I googled it. Thought it was an insect-catching device. :(

    • A pooter is also a fart sound simulating item
