preorder at $486, seems cheap if the rrp AUD 941.40 is true
edit: maybe not true as one review has:
Xiaomi’s offering three different versions of the new phablet. For just 1499 yuan (about USD230), you get 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a Snapdragon 650 processor. 1699 yuan (USD260) ups the storage to 64GB. There’s also a premium model with 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a Snapdragon 652 for 1999 yuan (USD307).
The company claims you can even scan a math problem and get a step-by-step solution.

83% of a 4850mAh battery in 30 mins!? That's impressive if it's true…well outside the qualcomm QC3.0 spec though which states 18W max.

    • +1

That'd be Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 technology. I regularly post deals on Quick Charge chargers.

      • But by the spec, it's essentially charging at a rate ~8050mAh (83% in 1/2 hour), which is around 40W (if my calculations are correct), well in excess of the specifications.

EDIT: For comparison, the HTC 10 with QC 3.0 takes 80 minutes+ to fully charge, and it has a 3000mAh battery.

        • +1

I'll have to look more into QC3 to give you an accurate answer. A lot of QC chargers are 40W though.

Edit: I think we're looking at a typo about how quickly it'll charge. Definitely a lot faster than a standard 5V/2A charger, but not that fast ;)

        • @Clear: as usual, many typo. especially the RRP of AUD900+. From??? .. even after everyone can see xiaomi releases official prices announcement

@eisniwre: Accurate translations from Chinese can be very difficult. Try reading a translated version of mi.com's Chinese site. You see millet everywhere.

        • @Clear: What have you got against millet?

        • @Clear: reviews look promising.

id probably bite if it was around $350 to 400, mostly because the internal being the SD650 which can be found in RMN3Pro

    • the 64GB model has SD652 if that makes a different….

  • +1

Impressive lack of bezel … but way to big for me.

    • +4

you will feel way too big for the first 3 months after that you will crave for more!

      • +1

Can categorically say no I won't since I already own a Sony Z Ultra 6.4" phone and it's borderline ;)

    • You will see thick black lines around the display within the bezel…like double bezel.

      • Yeah… Like on every other phone. That's just the bezel of the display panel itself, invisible on black phones, but easily shows on white/gold/blue/whatever other colour phones.

  • 1999 RMB in China.
This price seems a reasonable one given our distance and normal gouging.

Didn't realize the bigger memory one was 1999 RMB. I'd rather get that one

    • yeah i had it edited. mixed up. so yeah 1999rmb for 128gb! wow apple please match this…

Literally half an inch off what you can call a tablet. I personally don't understand the benefit of having a phone you need a handbag to carry.

    • +5

      i use mine for:
      50% watching movies
      25% browsing and whatsapp
      23% games
2% make phone call and sms

i dont want to use anything less than 5.5" and no i dont carry manbag

    • What about the benefit of a tablet you don't need a bag for though?

  • +3

Thought about myself holding this gigantic phone next to my ear when answering a call. No way.

  • +2

    $500 phone. No band 28 for Optus/Telstra 4G+
    Not worth it imo.

    • -1

Yes it actually can, compatible with band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500). You can say about 68% of compatibility

  • Looks cool.. I miss my old Z Ultra..

Do these come with malware on the OS that requires a re-flash?

  • +2

There is a -$15 voucher for this: XIAOMIMAXEDM
I wouldn't buy it now anyway. I bet on the release day the price will go over $50 down, and next $50 within less than a month.

    • +1

Indeed. Why buy now and risk it? Wait for price to go down, software to get updated and reviews to come out first.

      • Pay with 28 degrees MC, get shopper protection. Claim refund of price difference?

        • And what if the phone is crap?

        • @plasmoske: We were talking about whether to wait for a price drop or buy now.

The phone being crap is an entirely separate matter.

        • @lostn:

Shopper protection only applies to items purchased in Australia anyway.

  • any link for the premium model?

  • +1

The market is saturated with high-end gigantic phones nowadays.

We need more phones in the 5" ~ 5.2" category. I'm still waiting to see if the rumoured Moto G 2016 is going to be 5" as well as the upcoming One Plus 3.

    • 100% agree.

Have had 2 phones now around 5.5" and you think you get used to it, but when I use other peoples phones around the 5" mark they seem about perfect.

Holding my old Samsung is so much more comfortable than my current phone, its no wonder large phones are dropped so often.

My next phone is going to be around the magic 5.

      • I went from a Nexus 4 to a Oneplus one (5.5 inches). It's still too small. :)

Hanging out for a good bang for buck 5.8"+ phone. This could be it.

    • Haha yes oddly enough I was just reading an article about how Sony basically has the flagship 5" phone segment all to itself ATM.

Remember the old ways of the ancients and how they thought a 5.5" phone was a joke? People of 2011 were so backwards and primitive :p

  • +1

Does this come with malware like most other Chinese phones?

    • +4

No it doesn't run Touchwiz. ;)

    • I think Reddit (it's a secret internet site where all the security experts hang out) worked out that connecting to a Chinese IP address equals malware. So obvious guys, DUH!

  • +1

That RRP is ridiculous if true by Xiaomi.

  • Wow beast of a phone but so huge, this is a phablet and not really suitable as an everyday "phone", great for movies and games.

    • +1

Agreed. At this size, 1080p is a bit of a disappointment. Before some Apple idiot claims you can't see more than 300ppi anyway, I can tell a clear difference between the 6 Plus' 400ppi (which is already 100ppi more than the fabled retina 300ppi limit) and my S6's 570ppi. And I have below average vision, so get better eyes.

You may not notice it when comparing phones at Harvey's, but when you've used one for a long time and then take a look at the other, you will immediately notice the difference.

Comparing the 570ppi to the 326ppi of iP6 or any 720p ~300ppi phone? Even bigger difference.

  • Clear when will you have the 4GB version on preorder?

    • Does 4GB actually improve performance, or will the memory manager just allow more apps to use up memory in the background before cutting them out?

      • I would think both to be true. having said that i dont want to buy anything less than 4GB RAM as even my Note 3 has that and it wont feel like an upgrade lol

        • Galaxy note 3?it has 3gb ram

        • @eisniwre: Yes i have a galaxy note 3 at the moment and looking to upgrade. bigger screen size would entice me along with better internals. hence looking at the 4gb ram version.

        • @joshmachine: same here. When I see new phone, then 3gb, 32gb, same screen size , I think that's the same with my note 3,so no point to upgrade to that

        • @eisniwre: yeah holding on for too long and my hands are itchy for a new phone but cant find a worthy update. Note 3 set too high a baseline :)

        • @joshmachine: and without significant upgrade in specs, once we restore all backup including Nova launcher, New phone will looks exactly the same as old one. Just different casing.

        • @eisniwre: thats another thing which has bothered me couple of times. maybe time to move back to iphone just for a change?

        • @joshmachine: nah. To expensive And not flexible enough. People suggest, change our launcher every six months. And wait for the ultimate revolutionary change of complete make over android design.

        • @eisniwre: in that case we will be looking at 2+ years before maybe something revolutionary actually comes which is good enough to move from Note 3.

  • I got a friend on holiday in china who can buy the 4gb version for me at the price of ~$420, with 68% compatible with telstra 4g, still hesitate to pull trigger. Should i wait for the review or just go with it, hm….

  • Beware this seller! Customer service is useless if you have any issues, I bought one of the ROMOSS 10000mAh power bank, and when it arrived it was faulty.

Customer service was zero help. After weeks of back and forward, I raised a Paypal dispute and they've insisted I return the product to get any refund.

As i'm sure you'd know, postage from Australia to China isn't exactly cheap, which I'm sure they are well aware. So basically I'm stuffed and out of pocket!

I'd stick to more reputable sources.
