12x Petrognola Beers - $25 or 2 for $40 - Chippendale Cellars, Sydney (Pickup Only)

90

They have the Nero al Farro and the Sandy Rossa available. Nero is a dark beer which is a bit of a porter type, the Sandy Rossa looks red on the website but is a lighter beer, quite sweet and similar to some belgian beers.

They are both about seven percent and at the same price as a case of standard shelf beer, this is a fair bargain.

They are basically trying to get rid of it at this price. I bought six cases of the stuff and it's gonna keep me warm in winter for sure.

  • Also, the place is on Abercrombie Street - there is parking out the front which is free for fifteen minutes, I think. I haven't had a problem snagging a park right out the front before. Coming in off cleveland street it's on the right side, almost opposite the Chippendale Hotel.

  • Might be worth adding (Pickup only) to the title..

  • How much are they normally?

    • Singularly, i've not seen them for under $5 a bottle, rising to $7 or more for higher alc% varieties.

It is definitely worth checking the best before date on imported beers; I suspect they may be close to or past best before at this price. I (just barely) passed on a case of 12 of one variety of these for $20, simply because they were about 6 weeks past 'best before' date, and since they aren't a 'session' beer I'd have not finished them for another couple of months.

      • I've never worried about best before dates on beer. Am I being an idiot? I am not hugely fussy, really.

You can down a few of these in a night. I had a good little session on them the other evening, switching between the two varieties over the night.

Not being an idiot, but from personal experience (I got given a couple of dozen heinekens with BB dates from 1-18 months overdue) taste for most beers begins to degrade from about 4-6 months after best before. Still drinkable at that stage, but when they hit a year they are just tasting very bready and flabby. At 18 months they really resembled wet cardboard in flavour and smell.

Disclaimer: higher alcohol beers and bottom fermented beers with residual yeast tend to decline slower or even age better. This is why Coopers put a 'best after' date on their ales. Their Vintage Ales are specifically brewed to age (up to 5 years), but personal experience with these ones buts their drinking sweet spot at about 3-4 years. At 5 years they were tasting a lot like bonox/marmite. Surprisingly, i found them tasting underdeveloped at even up to 3 years of age!

        • @carwashhair: Heinekens are in green glass which doesn't help either! I'm guessing brown glass bottles age better unless you have them in constant darkness. I have a bunch of homebrew in PET bottles (I hate the bottling process) and sadly I can't enjoy them after time because aging in PET bottles ends rather badly!

    • Bloke at the bottle shop reckons the guy wanted to make about a hundred off each case, but I think he was planning to sell them as singles for about $8.50 a pop. It's totally not worth that, but it's worth it for $40 a case!

  • I would be tempted by the Nero, but my wife won't touch dark beers (yeah, you'd think that was a bonus wouldn't you!).

Unfortunately the review of the Rosso that you linked makes it sound foul!

    • It's not for everyone but it really does the job :-P

Got a case to give it a go.
        Half Rosso and half Nero.

The Rosso expired in March. The Nero is dated June.

They are awkward-shaped bottles to fit in the bottle rack in the fridge mind!

        • The bottles are classic. They just say 'I'm trying to be fancy'.

  • If only somebody in melbourne had these at this price
