"Pillow Top" - Mattress in a Box?

Hi guys,

I recently moved to a regional area and it is quite expensive to buy furniture and homeware products here.
After sleeping on a blow up camping mattress for far too long I am now looking to invest in a 'proper' mattress.
Upon searching through ebay I found these "Pillow Top" mattresses that offer free shipping for such a low price (< $200).
Surely it would cost lots of money to send a mattress anywhere, you ask?
Curiously, I discovered that the secret to free shipping is because the mattress gets rolled up, packaged into and delivered inside a box, to your door. All you have to do is open the packaging up and let the mattress sit for 24 hours before using it. It's like magic.

I haven't heard of or seen any product like this before and I was just wondering whether anyone could offer some advice or give an opinion about them. I am only after a double size or similar and am not looking to spend more than $200-300 for a mattress. If these products aren't any good then I will just buy second hand.

Below is a link to one of these mattresses that I am looking at:

This one is an Australian company and offers 10 year guarantee:

  • Aldi were selling them a few months back. My wife and I bought one for the guest bedroom. A few have slept on it already and have had no complaints. It was quite interesting to watch. It's obviously been vacuum sealed by some insane machine, strong enough to compress all the foam and the springs. You can hear the springs "unleash" once the mattress is unrolled.

  • One thing to note is that these vacuum sealed beds will have 0 side support, if that is something important for you.

  • Used one for a couple of years that I got off ebay, had to get a new mattress as it started sinking in the middle and I developed back problems from it. I ended up getting getting a floor model from harvey norman that was like %60 off. I've heard some pretty good reports from some of the more expensive names of online in a box mattresses e.g. ergoflex, sleepingduck. I've seen one called koala that looks pretty good, they have some deals posted on here every now and then. There's heaps more brands, I've seen one in the US that's been getting a bit of hype lately called casper but there's been some stories coming out about the CEO ripping everyone off.

  • My best friend recently bought this one, as you said came rolled up in a box & then slowly inflated itself over the course of the next few hours.

I have tested it out & it put my $1200 mattress to shame for sheer comfort & it was pretty great support wise as well. He was also having really bad back pain from his previous mattress, and now has none at all.

Comparatively some friends recently purchased a new Sleeping Duck mattress that is also quite comfortable, however a fair bit pricier. But it comes with more of a satisfaction guarantee.

  • They don't tend to have great longevity but for the price, you could buy a new one every two years and you'd still be ahead of someone buying a $1000 mattress to last 10 years (which they inevitably dont).

the lack of hard sides is what swayed me against getting one in the end. freedom sells decent own-brand mattresses for between $600 - $800 (for a queen) which are worth a look, and include a full foam box (way better edge support).

  • What about the matching base?
