Using Spotify but want something better - what's the best alternative?

I've been happily using Spotify for a few months now and it's been fantastic for finding new music and easily worth the fairly cheap subscription rate. However, I have some problems with it.

  1. It doesn't integrate with my existing (very large) music collection at all. Ideally I'd really like something that will allow me to make playlists that combine streamed music with stuff from my own collection. This is because my collection has stuff in it that most streaming services don't have in their libraries - rarities, bootlegs, alternate takes, demos, and so on. Or at least be able to switch between streaming and library music without quitting and starting a new app.

  2. It is frustratingly slow to load on Android and the user interface is slow and clunky. It's not very full featured like most normal media players. (I use Media Monkey). It lets you save music for offline listening but it's clunky (eg. if you delete something it won't immediately clear up drive space).

  3. It doesn't have a lot of the music I've looked for: it's invisibly missing tracks from some albums (eg. two tracks from the Fates Warning album "Disconnected"), some quite well known artists/bands have little if any music available at all (like King Crimson and Syd Barrett), and there are whole albums missing too. This is the least important problem because I can fill it out with my own collection if the first criteria is met.

It's critical that I can cache/save music for offline use so that I don't hammer my limited mobile data while not at home.

Any suggestions for an alternative that fixes some or all of these problems? Thanks!

I've been using Google Music for radio but I keep my own music collection.

Ideally I'd really like something that will allow me to make playlists that combine streamed music with stuff from my own collection.

For this reason, and the fact you have an android phone, I would recommend Google music.

Other reasons to consider Google Music:

    • Sometimes Google drops the price - I recently paid $30 for six months.
    • You can upload 50,000 songs, even without Google Music subscription
    • Log into any browser and access you music, no itunes needed.
    • Chromecast/Google cast from PC or phone to your favourite speaker system with the excellent $50 dongle. If you do this, remember to set the sound quality to high (this is configurable, do a google search)

I find the android and website interface to be slightly annoying (auto songlists never ever match my tastes but if you are into generic stuff it's ok). The "stations" it creates from bands/music you are into are better.

If they could fix the android phone interface it would be a clear winner.

Apple music is next best - rated it lower due to the problems I hear with people having their collections "erased", and I hate itunes.

      • next you'll be telling me the human centipad wasn't real

      • They only delete files if you select the option.

    • I've tried to do this - I kind of lied when I said 'android'. Really I'm using a Blackberry with Google Play and Amazon installed, through which I use Android apps. I've been having trouble installing/running Google Music and other Google apps with it, so I might not be able to use Google Music until I can figure it out. :( It's a shame because Google Music via browser is my go-to for new purchases most of the time because I like how easy it is to use.

  • Spotify is pretty SOTA. apple music is pretty good, but from general consensus i hear it mostly doesn't come close.

    • SOTA? State of the Art?

  • I'm currently using Apple Music as its free with Telstra but it's certainly no better than Spotify. My experience with Spotify on my Android phone (S6 edge) was very good and without any real issue.

  • While i dont believe Guvera intergrates your own music, it does place all your offline tracks in one playlist automatically

I know this is a few months old, but nobody's mentioned Deezer yet? It's a pretty decent competitor to Spotify. There's others around too, but Deezer would be the next biggest.

Some old ones which were smaller and I think are all dead now were MOG, JB Hifi Now and Guvera.
