Free BP Fuel (for Volunteers)

Not strictly a bargain, but a reward for volunteers, so don't neg as it's for a good cause.

If you're a not-for-profit volunteer and you use a vehicle to undertake your volunteering activities, you could be awarded with free BP fuel to help you in your volunteering work.

Sigh… I guess I'm not a "power user" of this website. Mods, feel free to remove and repost in forum if you feel that is best. I give up on this site, so many negative ppl with nothing better to do.

      • +3

Yes while I love some of the bargains on here. I'm disapointed that some people can't seem to see beyond their own nose.

    • +7

@xuqi: You should know that I accidentally pos'ed you. I meant to neg you. Look just because you can't use it, doesn't mean it's not a deal. It's a freebie for volunteers. You can just close the tab and go on elsewhere to look for your bargains, no need to be so negative.

    • +2

      Yes you fail.

This a This is a bargain if you're a Volunteer, obviously you don't Volunteer because you cant see how it could be classed a bargain.

    • +3

Some people help out other people. Given it costs their time & sometimes money, getting some free fuel if applicable is a bargain (free - can't get cheaper then 100% off - that's a bargain) for them.

Just because volunteering is out of your needs/reality doesn't mean it's worthy of a neg. As lame as neg'ing a Sydney store because you live in Brisbane and isn't handy for you.

    • xuqi - very simple way to find this out. USE the report function, taht way the mods are alerted and if we agree we can move it to the forums.

If more people let the mods mod rather than take it on themselves to do this, then things may be a little more harmonious.

If we dont act the way you like, then go ahead make the negative vote.

The REPORT button is very powerful, it will often get a faster response that a negative vote, as its something we look at first whenever we visit the site.

    Thanks!

  • +2

I do consider this a bargain. I fail to see how you, xuqi, don't?

  • +2

Thanks competitions. I volunteer, as many people do, and it looks like I am eligible. I will apply and see how I go.

    • -1

It's people like you xuqi that have ruined this site, good on you competitions for letting all the volunteers know that they are eligible for a very small rewards for the huge efforts!

        • -4

lol what kind of volunteer asks for rewards in return for work.

          • +2

@scrimshaw: None of them do, and none of them are asking for rewards on this site - but it's nice gesture of a company to recognise the contributions they make. Imagine what a crappy world we would live in without that the hard work of volunteers.

            • +1

@SydGuy: That isn't my point, I was chastising braidN for thinking that volunteers are expecting to get something back for voluntary work.

I was a volunteer myself, I'm not against anybody voting + on this deal just because it's targeted towards a voluntary worker.

    • +4

Are you objecting because it's a "good deed" and therefore belongs in its own section? Because to tell the truth all the vendors in the deals here are motivated by self-interest. Strictly speaking nobody is giving away anything for absolutely nothing. Some hope to get publicity in return, some hope to attract new customers, some hope to collect email address to send advertising, and in this case BP hopes to get some kudos for community relations.

The way I see it, it's a freebie for some people. I can't use it, but others who are worthy of commendation can. In my book that's enough for me to let it be called a freebie.

    • +2

The title clearly indicated it's for volunteers. Voting positive to counter your negative.

    • +1

But then you are making it overly complicated, trying to classify people who volunteer and people who read Ozbargain. Must it be that everybody who comes to this site must have the motive of saving money for themselves? Why not just call it a freebie and leave it at that.

  • +5

I still haven't read anything that explains to me why "free fuel" is not considered a bargain?

      • More like for those who volunteer because they are awesome not looking for something in return than this is definitely free and a great bargain.

      • +2

So? Some of the deals here you have to be in VIC or QLD or NSW to get. Are you going to complain that because you have to go to a different city to collect, it's not a deal? As long as it's stated clearly in the title that it's not for everybody, nobody is getting misled.

      • +4

        It's free to volunteer :)

  • +3

No guarantee that you will get free fuel. The site says you "could" receive free fuel. Lol at the OP asking not to be negged.

    • Neg it because of this ;-)

  • +2

Not against Volunteer benefiting - but if you read the line it says you

    COULD

get free petrol - not necessarily you

    WILL

Certainly has better chance than the weekend Tattslotto, but I consider this as a lottery as well!

    • +4

There are many volunteers out there who do not meet the Eligibility Criteria for this promotion so although they do volunteer they will not be successful with their application. To not be eligible it could be as simple as being an employee of BP.

So of course it states "could". If you meet the Eligibility Criteria you "will" be successful.

I think that's fair, I can see a lot of unscrupulous people trying to take advantage of this, we've all seen it so often lately. Criteria must be put into place to allow the real volunteers to take advantage of it.

That's how I read it anyways.

  • +1

I see it as a good deal, as people who volunteer don't expect anything back in return for there good deeds.
So if they do apply and get free fuel that's a bonus, if they don't get it im sure they wont be fussed as they are already doing the volunteer work.
    Im not a volunteer btw

  • I think it's worth posting as a bargain. I don't think it's worth a neg at all. If it doesn't apply to you then just don't +ve it. Even after reading through the details I still this it's a bargain to some people.

If you were already a volunteer or thinking about doing something like that, then this would interest you greatly.

If someone posted 'chance to win free petrol if you buy a fridge from Retravision', I wouldn't negative it just because I wasn't interested in buying a fridge.

    • -1

You are missing the point. Xuqi and BraidN are not negging this deal because they aren't interested in volunteer work. They are negging this because it's not a BARGAIN.

      • +1

Free fuel is not a bargain?

  • +1

Interesting to compare the comments/votes (or lack of them) when it was posted before ;-)
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/12164

  • Won't neg or pos it because I think it's more suited for the boards, but one point that may concern some:

BP may, for an indefinite period unless otherwise advised, use the information for promotional, marketing and publicity purposes, including sending electronic messages or telephoning the entrant…
… All applications become the property of BP. Applicants consent to BP using the applicant's name, likeness, image and/or voice in the event they are successful (including photograph, film and/or recording of the same) in any media for an unlimited period without remuneration for the purpose of promoting this programme (including any outcome), and promoting any products distributed and/or supplied by BP.

    • Sounds like BP wants to take advantage of all the "wow, you're such a good person" stories, and manipulate the volunteers to sell their brand. Neg to BP.

    • All the companies reserve the right to hang onto your information, that's not a surprise. But yes, people should be aware that nothing is totally free and can come with strings.

  • -2

I know I will get hell for this but I agree with the neg votes above. There is no bargain to be had. Defending a post because it's "for a good cause" is not why this site was created. Saying things like "volunteers might not have known about this" does not make this post any more appropriate. This is not a news site. It is a site to post up bargains that are found.

The post above shows why it is "free". We have deals that get negged because they keep your personal information "for an indefinite period" so why not neg this one?

    • Do you really believe that your personal shopping habits will not get tracked if you take up a bargain from Woolies or Coles and then swipe your Flybuys/Everyday Savings/whatever card? And even that docket you presented can tell Shell where people who shop at Coles buy their petrol. Or that online retailers will not take advantage of your email address to send you lot of advertising (some would call it spam)? To be consistent you would have to neg all of those.

BP's no different from any of them. They have a selfish side in this too. They want to be able to use the volunteer as good publicity later. This is not surprising. It's up to the readers to be aware of strings. You could point it out like pais did and increase awareness. But in my book it's not a good reason to neg. But that's my opinion.

      I haven't pos'ed this deal either BTW.

  • +3

    stupidest negs in this thread.

Actually I still don't really understand the negs at all.

    1. People volunteer without expecting anything in return except for doing a good deed and helping people.
    2. They get exclusive access (eligibility permitting) to a discount due to their volunteering efforts.
    3. People think this is wrong and neg the deal (they are greedy? they shouldn't expect anything and therefore don't deserve it?)

I know someone who volunteers a LOT (financially and time) and they don't EXPECT anything from others, but i have little doubt it would help them with their (un-subsidised)expenses. And so all the above points still result is some people thinking its neg-worthy? shakes head Volunteers should be getting MORE benefits to help reduce the burden of their efforts, and it might also promote more volunteering (so long as perks aren't expected!).

    Just my 2c

  • I have now moved this to forums. From the response I think it might not be suitable to be on the bargains section, but feel free to continue discussions in the forums.

    • [deleted, not worth the time]

      • Can't win em all mate, relax :)

  • Thanks for the heads up, I'll pass it on to some people who do volunteer their time. I appreciate the post :)

  • Is the free fuel unleaded? If not, it will not help me much.
