OzGameShop Point System Change

Checked my points balance on OzGameShop the other night, and found this. (apologies for the terrible formatting)

$2.50 2,500 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $20.00)
$5.00 5,000 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $30.00)
$10.00 10,000 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $60.00)
$20.00 20,000 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $100.00)
$25.00 25,000 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $150.00)
$50.00 50,000 Player Points (minimum voucher spend $275.00)

No more increasing value as you 'bank' points (potentially having some expire), and minimum spends that have gone way up!

As a point of reference, I grabbed a $35.00 voucher for 25,000 points, which I could use on a minimum order of $85.00 on Christmas Day, and a $12.00 for 10,000 points on a ~$25.00 purchase mid January.

When did this change actually happen? And is this how it is going to stay?

I understand that a business is a business, but the player points with their increasing value and versatility (lower minimum spends) were often what had me spend a little more buying from OzGameShop, knowing I would have a 'decent saving' in the long run.

  • Didnt most people stop buying from these clowns long ago?

    • Didn't realize they were clowns.

That's just admitting you're slow on the uptake.

    • Depending what you're after, they're not too bad, although some prices are straight up ridiculous. With the previous iteration of the player point system though, you could make some purchases with pretty significant 'discounts' compared to other online stores and retailers, and this was a driving motivator for using the store. They're also, in my experience at least, quite reliable.

Suffice to say though, the new point system does not work for me. The non-increasing values are less than ideal, especially with the arguably fast decay rate, but what kills it the most for me is the high minimum voucher spend. Again, $35.00 off at $85.00 spend under the old system equates to $25.00 off $150.00 spend under the new.

Points are worth less, and you need to spend more to use them. If either the increasing values or minimum spend stayed the same, I'd understand, but this almost seems like a move to make them near unusable for general customers.

      • Yeah they're actually really good on some deals. I've bought a few games there recently after searching high and low for cheaper prices.

  • I just found out about the change as well, they didn't send us email or anything about it.

Hey Jjager, I just want to clear a few things up on here and give you all the information regarding any updates to our PP scheme. We updated our Player Points scheme based on customer feedback we've collected over the last 6 months. After all our orders we ask people to fill in a survey and rate our scheme then leave comments. The comments and feedback from surveys are what have led to the changes. The bonus of additional points when you bank them was removed after establishing it just wasn't being used by 89% of customers. Due to its almost redundant nature we have removed the bonus but in doing this we have also decided to allow the promotional increase of 5% back minimum to be extended for another 6 months. This offer was due to end at the end of May but it will be extended for a further 6 months.

We have also decided to add several upcoming AAA titles to our Player Points promotion where you get 50% more Player Points back when pre-ordering the title. These include Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1 (according to comparegames.com.au we're cheapest online on COD already not even taking into account Player Points).

We have had to increase minimum spends on our vouchers as it simply isn't sustainable with the amount of points we're giving away every single day. We didn't come to this decision lightly and spent a long time thinking about it but to continue with the min spends as they were was economically unviable for us. These changes were communicated via email to our subscribers and via banners on site for the duration of last week.

At ozgameshop.com we're really proud of our Player Points and consider it an industry leading scheme. We give more back them most retailers and we're happy to do so because we appreciate loyal customers and like to reward that loyalty. The user base for the scheme is growing every single day and we're happy that it's becoming such a success. We are of course open to feedback and the surveys and contact form can be used to send us suggestions for improvements. If anyone wants to get in touch for more information or simply to have a chat about our changes please email us at [email protected]

PS Sorry for the essay, lots of info to get across.

I appreciate the response. I did not receive the email, so I was a little surprised to see the change, especially since I was one of the people that banked points for larger discounts.

I can completely understand the change from the old system. Even as a customer, I can see how $35.00 off a $85.00 order would be unsustainable. Removing both at once however does seem rough, especially with, again, as a customer, the minimum order seeming a little high. It is also a little out of proportion with the $20 off sitting at $100, then the $25.00 off sitting at $150. On a personal level, it hits me a little harder as, over two dozen or so orders, only two are above $100, and its not uncommon to see a product priced just below a minimum threshold (sometimes by $0.01), or $10-15 above the threshold.

Ultimately though, you are a business, so I can't fault you for adjusting an unsustainable system. As highlighted in my post above, I can't fault you guys for service, and fully acknowledge that you're (generally) a better option than a lot of other retailers, however the point change is something I'll be considering when you're not.

      Cheers.

  • UPDATE: We've had a few emails/comments from customers explaining they haven't received our email sent regarding changes. Although we can't identify which customers did and which didn't we are happy to add the points that would have been awarded as a bonus to peoples accounts. Please email [email protected] with your account number and we will sort the rest! :)

    • Which points that would have been rewarded?

      • Hey Putnum, if you have points that would have been added to with a bonus when converting to a voucher get in touch with our customer service team via the email address below and ask them to add your bonus on. They will check your account, check your points and see if you would have got a bonus. If you would have had one they will add the difference :)

        [email protected]

PS be sure to add [email protected] to your address book in your email provider. This is most likely the cause of not receiving our emails or them dropping into promo/junk.

        • Oh ok. I used my points (down to 68 points left) on an order just days before the points system changed.. so i guess my current pending points are not eligible ☺

    • I would like to know what points you're talking about too.

      • Hey eieron (sorry for copy paste but it's the same info), if you have points that would have been added to with a bonus when converting to a voucher get in touch with our customer service team via the email address below and ask them to add your bonus on. They will check your account, check your points and see if you would have got a bonus. If you would have had one they will add the difference :)

        • Okay, thanks for the reply!

          Hopefully it works…

  • didn't even no there was a bonus

Ooooouch. It's the minimum spend that really gets me. I have $20 in player points, but now I need to spend $100 to use that. At the moment, there's only about one game that I want from Ozgameshop, and that's not $100. So should I bother buying it from OGS? Should I get just $5 for it? Should I wait until something else is available and hope that it puts it over to $100? The player point scheme was one thing that kept me coming back and using OGS over Mighty Ape and others with similar prices. But if the minimum spend is that high, what's the point? $5 off is not such a great deal.

  • I just found this. Wow I had 45000 points and now im kinda pissed. Not sure what to do as the minimum spend it so high. I planned to use them on some games that were out of stock, guess I shouldn't have waited. I never go the email about the change either, well maybe I deleted it without reading it but this is a major change.

  • its changed yet again
