Belkin Wemo LED lighting starter kits at going for $149 at Bing Lee. They appear to be $179 at most other places that offer a price promise (e.g. Officeworks, Bunnings). I took advantage of Bunnnings price matching and just picked one up for $134.10)

  • What are these like compared with Philips hue kits with the psychedelic colours?

There is no beating Hue. I have a wemo switch and it's junk. The app is unusable and can't find the switch most of the time.

I bought this kit last weekend from OfficeWorks for $148 (after 5% price beat from Harvey Norman @ $156) but returned it a few days ago.

    2 reasons:

    • while the lights responded to the apps on our 2 phones for the first couple of days, by Thursday they were not responding (to either phone) - I think the wall socket hub had crashed and maybe needed a reboot, but dont want to be doing that every few days.

    • found instead of paying $74+ per WHITE only bulb, I could get COLOUR smart bulbs for $40 ea delivered direct from LIFX.com, using promo code ORIGINALE27 (original grey case only) or RMN50 (white and grey case) which connect directly to your home WiFi (no need for a hub).

Note, the LIFX new Color1000 models are more expensive (tip, 10% off code for signing up to newsletter), but the originals are still good and an awesome price. But beware, the original model bulbs are quite large and may not fit in some fittings.

    • I should add - the Philips Hue are also well regarded.

Ive not tried them myself, and they do cost around $270 for a 3-bulb starter kit (with hub - works out to $90 per bulb) - so I still think the LIFX is better value right now (for the original range with promo codes) - but I would not mind trying the Hue in the future if they appear at a good price.

    • Thank you so much for the RMN50 code!!! Just ordered 4 original bayonet bulbs directly from lifx.com at only $42 each (free shipping)!

The cheapest I was able to find yesterday was $65 each on eBay (free shipping), Harvey Norman at $86 in store (low stock in NSW) and the Officeworks website at $127 (potentially $82 with a price match).

Going to see if colours can change moods… Should help calm down the kids! (http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/how-color-can-help-you-work_n…)

Hah glad it helped - I didnt find the code originally, it was someone elses comment in another post I think.

4 days ago I ordered an extra (4th) bulb by itself, and it was also free shipping which surprised me. $40.96 once converted to AUD on my credit card.

Let's wait for the price to drop below $15 or wait for ALDI to sell the cheaper version. We can try 59 days and return it.

    • Hopefully aldi will sell theirs with built in speakers

Bought this about a year ago when Dse had one of the clearances.

Got Bunnings to price beat it and then returned it about a month later.

Horrible interface and really not worth it.

Read through the forums and wait for a LIFX sale and clearance.

All in all even the ameria]can models seem to be deemed safe for use in Aus.

    • Important to check the voltage on the bulbs as they may be specific 110v or 240v. I believe the Gen2 Hue bulbs are not 240v yet and that's why we only have gen 1 in Australia.

  • Negging the deal, sorry OP, just want to save people from wasting their money. Unusable! Shocking app, you will never get as far as using the lights via app. Not completely useless just very expensive light globes.

  • I vow to never buy another Belkin product. I have WEMO switch and it disconnects all the time. Biggest piece of crap
