New/ Demo Diesel Car with Budget $30000; Whats My Best Buy

Looking for a diesel car for around the 30k mark. The golf is out of my budget. Sure there's lots of petrol cars around, but my employer gives me a higher car allowance for diesel.

Would like to know what the best car would be for my budget

So far I've shortlisted
Hyundai i30 Active x
Renault Megane looks better than the Hyundai IMO(although the new one is coming later this year)
Mazda CX3 Maxx (fabric seats)

There will be a lot of highway driving, so prefer a car that lets me accelerate smoothly and not one that has an engine that hesitates

Has anyone driven these cars?
Anything better I can get either brand new or demo for $30000?

you have the i30 Active and CX3 Maxx, good.
    how about…
    i40?
    ix35?
    Kia Sportage?
    Passat?
or even that Golf that you secretly want? http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Volkswagen-Golf-20…

    • should have specified new/ demo :)
Don't secretly want the Golf; just see that it is beyond my budget of 30K (no I cannot stretch)
      i40 $37k
      kia sportage 36k
      passat 40k plus

mate - every model i suggested is in your budget, otherwise I wouldn't suggest it

the link for the Golf is a real car, for less than $30k, i don't see what your point is

you are not looking hard enough

Is this a company requirement? The car oscargamer posted is 28K it says used but it's only done about 6000KMS so it was probably the car the manager used for a couple of weeks or a press car or something like that.

No it isn't. Even the one I suggested below isn't really out of budget.

When you buy a car you can negotiate on price. If you called them and asked if they could come down to 30K on that I reckon they would.

The only thing I'd say is you could try and find one with radar guided cruise control and lane departure warnings - this might be more but you could argue to your manager that it is a safer car for highway driving.

Get the golf. It really is one of the best.

I'm sure you could get a demo diesel for $30K You might be eligible for corporate pricing as well.

    E.g http://www.carsales.com.au/demo/details/Volkswagen-Golf-2016… would be perfect ?

A lot of people aren't keen on them but I think they are great cars for the money.

Write to Paul Gover, car writer at the Melbourne Herald Sun. He gives excellent advice. He answers via email even if your letter and his answer isn't published.

    • certainly worth a shot, ta

  • I had a Golf TDI 2.0 and replaced it with a i30 CRDI. Golf cost me alot more back in the day, however it did start to age badly around the 7 year mark. I replaced it with the i30 CRDI which I have had now for 2 years and its a good car for the price. Certainly lot cheaper than the Golf it replaced. 1.6l vs 2.0l is noticeable between these manufacturers. The Golf certainly had more power/torque, but the i30 crdi with the smaller motor is still nice to drive.

I like my i30 CRDI so much I would still buy another one if I had to in the future.

    Good luck with purchase.

    • thanks Michael
Does having more power/torque mean that it is easier to accelerate and overtake with the Golf compared to the i30?
Thanks (sorry I am not very scientific)
