Moving Potted Fruit Trees across Melbourne

Not sure if this is the right forum, but it has to do with garden so I suppose so!

Basically I need to move 4 large pots from one side of Melbourne to the other (74KM). I don't own a trailer, but I can attach one to my car.

I'm wondering what you guys would do in this situation. Is there a cost efficient way to hire a van, or to get someone else to pick up and deliver them? Can I get a trailer on one side of Melb and return it on the other side?

Any suggestions are appreciated :)

If you decide to put the trees in a trailer they will need to be protected from the wind ,best to put them in a van or small truck…a 74 km trip unprotected will kill them. Try posting the job on Airtasker.

    • Thanks, I haven't heard of Airtasker but assumed there was a website that did this sort of thing. Didn't know the travel would kill them either.

Bunnings has free trailer hire if you buy something long.

    • Do you reckon i could buy something from one store and take the trailer back to a different store?

I could always tarp up the plants to give them the protection they need

got to return it to the same store.

you could always look out for a neighbour in the street with a ute (or trailer) and see if you could borrow it.

if it's a trailer then give them a 6 pack as thanks
if a ute then 2 6 packs and fill up the tank.

I hired a trailer with a cage, dug them out and repotted. Used the cage type so it would give them a little protection.
Move yourself and U-Haul are at a lot if Servos and say they can offer one way.
They aren't cheap but new trees would have cost a lot more.

The trees will now be going into dormancy(Apples Pears Plums etc.) removing them from the pots will make them so much easier to move (repot with fresh soil if soil is more than 2yrs old).Depending on shape you may even find you can transport them in a sedan i have moved 7foot high trees in a holden cruze.Note..To avoid damaging branches load root ball thru front door and pass thru to rear of boot. remove thru the boot.

    • Thanks, I think the hardest one to move will be the fig. It's quite wide. We'll be putting them in the ground once they're here though, so I'll have to consider removing them from the pots when I next have a look. Who knows, maybe only the fig will need special attention.

      • You may even find that with a bit of selective pruning the fig will fit..(maybe semi espalier it)be sure to keep the cuttings as they will grow as well.
