Buying JB Hi-Fi giftcards to make big purchase and earn AmEx points

Hi folks. I'm about to spend $2300 on two aircon units and JB is almost the cheapest. Was thinking of buying JB giftcards at Coles so that I can get 3x points on my AmEx Platinum Edge, but my local Coles only stocks $30 cards.

Do some stores stock larger denominations? I'd feel bad walking into JB with 77x$30 giftcards :P (I'd go nuts trying to buy that many, actually)

Other than using Wish Giftcards to buy at Masters instead, I can't see a way to max out the points in the way I had hoped…

  • There are lots of possibilities. I think Woolworths have JB gift cards in $50 denominations and they might have them in higher value as well.

You could attempt to get Wish Cards at a 5% discount, purchasing them with the Amex card and then going to Woolworths and converting the Wish cards to JB cards. There are several ways to get 5% discounted gift cards and some of them take Amex.

If you decide to purchase the JB giftcards at Woolworths either directly by Amex or by Wish cards, you may need to allow 24 hours between the purchase of the cards and using them in store. Some cards take 24 hours before they will activate. I have heard stories of people buying the JB cards and then using them on the same day so you might get lucky.

I haven't tried any of the above techniques. These are only suggestions but your results may vary.

  • I didn't realise Woolies had JB cards as well - thought it was only Coles from some comments elsewhere. Thanks for that! I'll explore further :)

  • I've seen some shocking receipts from multiple gift card purchases at JB because every card has the usual authorisation/checking part on the receipt. I've seen a receipt that was at least 12 feet long.

    Fun times.

  • Largest denomination from Woolies/Coles I've seen is $100. But pointscrazy has basically mentioned the other ideas I had (buying WISH GCs for 5% off, paying with AMEX and then buying JB Hi-Fi GCs with them)

I've done it before with 8x $100 GCs and even then I felt bad. Can't imagine doing 77… Does anyone know a way to convert smaller GCs from JB into larger ones?

    • I have heard of this one but I can't remember how it works.

Perhaps purchasing a large value JB gift voucher online and paying for it with the smaller value gift cards. I think there might be a maximum to the number of gift cards you can use to purchase the large gift card. I've seen the technique written somewhere on OzBargain but I can't remember the details.

I have no idea how practical the idea is and whether it would actually save time overall.

      • That would actually be good. Even if it takes a little more time, I might be willing to do that in the future just to save hassle at the store. Even better if you can do it all online. I'm surprised you can use gift cards to purchase a larger gift card though!

  • So, none of my local Woolies stock JB giftcards (I've rung a few tonight). Meanwhile, most Coles near me stock the $50 cards as the highest value, but you can find $100 at a few Coles (not many!). One helpful Coles employee suggested trying to make a bulk order by calling Coles Head Office.

I'm going to try the price-match path with Masters instead, so I can just buy much higher-value Wish giftcards and not be a dick and trawl around for between 22 and 77 giftcards at various Coles stores:)

    • Something to keep in mind.

Just remember whenever you pay with gift card for anything, if you ever intend to refund it you're likely to get refunded in gift cards.

Also keep in mind sometimes it would mean potentially foregoing extended warranty/price protection that you might get from your credit card. Personally, it's sometimes worth foregoing the 5% discount for the warranty/price protection (not to mention, less hassle because you don't need to go buy the gift cards + then use multiple cards to pay)

      • Yes, that's a good point which I've been thinking about too. And especially if I go down the Masters price-match route, as the Platinum Edge gives two points per dollar at Masters.

Worth keeping in mind, though, that the extended warranty for this card is a maximum of one year (the aircon already has a five-year warranty).

  • can you buy the cards online as e-gift cards with the same benefits?
    I bought a 1
    $1800 coffee machine with $100 e-gift cards.

    • Yes definitely (the WISH cards). JB cards can be bought using AmEx online through JB using Paypal, but you earn fewer points.
