Which Car Should I Buy and How Much I Should Pay?

I am planing to buy a new car on finance. My budget is around $38K. I refer a SUV car. After looking around on the Internet, I consider the Nissan Qashqai, Honda HRV and Toyota Raw 4. They are very much the same price. However, there are different promotion On each car and I don't know what I should take and how much I should offer them. This is what I found out after 1st inspection.

  • Nissan Qashqai Ti Petrol (Top of the range) - They told me $41.5K drive away. I offer them for $37K. They said they can give me $37.5K + 1% interest rate for 3 years.
  • Honda HRV VTi L is $37.5K drive away. I haven't make any offer with them yet. Currently they extended the warranty to 5 years.
  • Toyota Raw 4 is $41K without bargain yet and the Toyota access sounds good to me.

If anyone have any experience about buying car, please advise me what car should I get and how much I should offer them. I really appreciate for your help.

A few months ago I would have been quick to suggest the Hyundai Tucson Active X. But in the recent comparison reviews there's a new player in town.

But based on looks alone the Tucson is miles ahead.

    • Thank you for your advise Ryanek

1% finance rate might have a balloon payment, just be careful
Toyota Advantage definitely has a balloon payment (the supposed value of the car in 3 years). If you go to sell the car within that time, you will owe more than the car is worth. Be mindful of that.

Qashqai has struggled in Australia, check 1yo and 2yo versions for the drop in resale
There are some Honda fanbois on here, so they'll go for the HRV
Rav4 doesn't offer a whole lot, usual Toyota just selling because of the brand name. Nothing special in that car at all.

What other cars have you looked at OP?

    • Hi Spackbace, Thank you very much for your advise. I haven't look for any other cars yet.

I manage to pay off my finance within 3 years. 1% for 3 years could save me around $5-$6K compare with other cars.

And Yes, Toyota Advantage has a balloon payment but I will keep my car after 4 years. The main point is I will borrow less money.

I like the Honda too. How much do you think I should offer the dealer? On the website, it said $37.5 drive away. I don't know what is their interest rate.

      • 1% for 3 years could save me around $5-$6K compare with other cars.

        How'd you work that sum? The difference between 1% and (for example) 6%, on a $38,000 borrow over 3yrs = $250.57/week and $269.67/week = ~$16/week / $832/year / $2496 over 3 years.
A noticeable figure, but not 1 to pick a certain car over another

And Yes, Toyota Advantage has a balloon payment but I will keep my car after 4 years. The main point is I will borrow less money.

The borrow is still the same. It's still a $38k borrow. You will just need to pony up approx $20k in 3 years to pay it off, how will you do that if you own the car for over 3 years?

I like the Honda too. How much do you think I should offer the dealer? On the website, it said $37.5 drive away. I don't know what is their interest rate.

Narrow it down to 1 car before even starting to haggle. Why would you haggle on 3 cars? You need to be ready to purchase, like right there and then, if you want to start negotiating. Don't be just loosely throwing out 'Would you do it for $X?' if you're not prepared to buy it for that price!

Qashqai is compact SUV (previously Dualis) - you can get much better for your budget. You can get a new midrange X-Trail for under $35k.

    • +1

Yeah I was thinking X-Trail as well :)

      • So we can't compare the Qashqai with X-Trail? They are still same manufacture

        • Sure you can compare, I would suggest the X-Trail over the 3 that you've listed.

I'm kinda surprised you've only looked at those 3 actually.

  • I would recommend going to have a look at the Mazda CX-5 before purchasing those. Not suggesting you have to buy it, just that it is worth looking at if you are in that market.

Personally, I think the CX-5 is a better car than each of these.

    • CX-5 is over my budget. It should cost around 50K+

  • Go for Hyundai Tuscon Highlander Turbo … Best car in same segment and worth in price value.

    • Just remember the Turbo has 6-month/7500km servicing though - the sales staff mightn't exactly point that out though. Very nice car though.

We were in a similar boat and looked at the Tuscon, Sportage and CX-5. All have 12 month/15000km servicing except that particular Tuscon. 3/5/7 year warranty with Mazda/Hyundai/Kia.

They are the best 3 in that segment, but think about what drivetrain you're after and go from there, as the options in the various models differ. We wanted petrol AWD which nudged us to the 2.5L CX-5.

      • You are wrong. It has 12 month or 15000 KM service with new 2016 built ANCAP 5 Star Ratings. AWD Petrol Highlander Turbo has unlimited KM warranty

        • Hmm, not according to their site

$289 + $189/year(15,000kms) = $478/year. Not exactly cheap, considering the average person does more than 15,000kms/year

        • Sorry I meant the 1.6L Turbo Petrol (which I think only comes in the Elite). The Hyundai website has gone for form over function, but it's correct - see the review on Drive

I just can't get over the fact that some people are willing to part with ~$40k for a jacked-up hatchback…but hey, it takes all types! ;)

    • Cough Vitara Turbo cough

    • When you have a baby, you'll see how much easier it is to take a carry cot in and out of a jacked-up hatchback.

      • We've got a couple of kids, never had an issue with a hatchback or sedan that doesn't have stilts! ;)

        • Also haven't seen the nice green grass over the other side either ;)

        • Yeah I'm not saying they have issues, I'm saying it's easier with a car that sits higher.

        • With the kid thing, I didn't know better until I tried a jacked up hatchback (RAV4) now I find my jacked up wagon (forester) is not as convenient for my back compared to our truck (pathfinder)

    • I'm considering getting a jacked up hatchback because (a) I hate trucks (b) I hate Soccermum cars (c) I want to do some very light offroading on the very odd occasion - e.g. to get to carparks in national parks that are "4x4 only"

  • With that budget, have you considered Subaru XV? It's a pretty solid car.

    • Solid as in full of plastic, and 1 of the tiniest cargo areas?

      http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-reviews/subaru-xv-20i-l-cvt-…

Boot space is a challenge if you have young kids and a pram/stroller of any “normal” size - definitely try before you buy.

There is plenty of headroom in the rear for kids but I would be a little concerned for anyone taller than 6’ in the front seats – with a 5’ 9” frame, my head was almost touching the roof.

      http://www.caradvice.com.au/407272/2016-subaru-xv-2-0i-s-rev…

The boot, too, can’t match some of the better small SUVs around, with a high load lip and shallow 310-litre capacity. Parents with prams should size up the cargo hold before signing on the dotted line.

Ownership for the Subaru XV isn’t cheap. The brand recommends servicing every six months or 12,500km, whichever occurs first, and if you don’t do a lot of distance driving, it will be a little costly on a yearly basis. The average annual service fee (or for 25,000km of travel) is $740. The XV, as with all Subarus, comes with a three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
