Why are bananas suddenly so cheap?

Last week you could get a box for $2 in an Eastgardens (NSW) fruit grocer and now Woolworths is advertising $1/kg bananas for Wednesday. What gives?

Supply and demand. If I recall correctly this is the time of the year they start harvesting Carnarvon bananas.

    • I think you're half right. Pretty sure banana harvesting happens all-year-round in the tropical climates.

However, when their plantations get flattened by cyclonic winds it takes a year to get new trees established.

And it's now been a year since cyclone Olwyn hit Carnavon…

      http://www.weeklytimesnow.com.au/agribusiness/horticulture/w…

It's also been a year since Cyclone Marcia hit central Queensland, although it may not have hit a lot of banana plantations, as most are grown in North Queensland.

Remember that banana prices were upwards of $7 a kg after Cyclone Larry in 2006, as apparently it wiped out 80-90% of Australia's banana crop.

  • Probably favorable weather conditions in queensland, or a higher than expected number of farms producing crops. Not the first time its happened. Are the bananas on the verge of expiring? That could explain it.

    Gwen Stefani is coming.

    No doubt

  • good supply in Bangkok?!

    • Australia doesn't import fresh bananas. Only processed stuff like dehydrated banana chips.

    • thought someone may get this joke.

I remember a time where Avocados were 50c a KG… not the current $3+ each!!! they were my staple cheap povo food at uni..

    • As an austudy lifestyle ingredient, avocado instead of butter made cheap'n'nasty[tm] toasted supermarket bread into a nutritious sustaining breakfast or lunch.
      Then again, so do bananas:-)

  • they are cheap because there is about to be a massive price-rise…

  • Oversupply due to the failure of the expected Minion/Richard Ayoade driven demand boost.

  • I remember when there was a low supply of bananas resulting in $12/kg.

  • Apparently humid growing conditions were just right, creating an oversupply for the farmers. http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/eat/humid-growing-cond…

Apparently this oversupply is "bad for the farmers". Having worked for these farmers in Tully before I have no sympathy.
