I am looking at buying a Sofa bed. My budget is around $300. I've searched on Gumtree and couldn't find anything decent in this price range.

Well when I moved into my current place 4 years ago I bid $10 on an old futon on eBay. It's probably not worth much more than $50. I thought I would just use it until I got something better. I was the only bidder.
But here I am still using it and it's hosted many overnight guests who all said they slept really well on it. Only thing I did was to hand sew a tear in the mattress and I got a $20 fitted sheet and a $5 throw rug.
I have a second futon which is similar in design to the ones you linked above but it's smaller and not as comfortable.
