Choose My New Phone - Budget $400

Hey fellow wise ozbargainers, I'm looking to possibly get a new phone. Have had my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus for I think like 5-6 years now. So go ahead and recommend me some phones. What I'm mainly looking for:

1) Good camera function
2) $400s or less price range
3) Good speed ie. doesn't lag heaps. I'm not a heavy apps or anything user so shouldn't tax the processor that much.
4) Durable and functional - looking at how long I've used my old phone probably gives you an idea
5) Access to common apps ie whatsapp, etc. Would prefer access to google play store/apple store rather than the Chinese ones for like Huawei, etc but not too fussed if I can still access the common apps and it's a great bargain

Thanks in advance. My future phone is in your hands.

    Nexus 5X or LG G4

    • Seeing as he had a GNex before, the 5X would be a good choice. I think he'd rage at the bloatware in the G4.

      • Yes, good point. The 5X would be a good choice and falls in range of the $ budget with the recent deals posted on OzBargain!

xiaomi note 3 pro or moto x style.. both under $300.

    • Whats the difference between moto x and moto x style?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro -SD650, 3GB RAM

  • Sony Xperia Z2. Still a powerhouse phone. 16Gb storage, 3Gb ram, microsd slot, awesome 20.7 MP camera, beautiful screen and just been updated to marshmallow 6.0.1
Running it myself and very happy with the latest marshmallow. It is very quick with no lag.

Moto X Style, $299 from Vodafone with a SIM only plan (which would set you back about $30).

    Problem solved.

    • or just outright if you can find the right store…

        Hmmmm….

        • just sold one in my store today. apparently the stock has been very limited.

          it's vodafone's last stock.

managed to get down to 24.91 per month for 12 month.

        • @jrmobile:

          Your store?

  • G4, can be had for less than $400. I've not owned one but it ticks all your boxes. Another requirement I suggest for you is battery. Lasting more than a day is always nice but when you're in a rush quick charge is extremely handy.

  • Everyone wants a cheap phone with good camera and no lag.

Cheap Huawei's have Google play, Though I'd spring for the G4 or moto x and or look at anything compact as they seem cheaper then their counterparts and only differ in screen size, mostly..

  • Got a Sony C4 a few weeks back when sony had them for $199.
nice phone to use, 2/32gig memory, 5.5 fhd screen.
its a mid range phone thats good to use, camera is really good, front camera is 5mp with a flash (selfy camera they say). I also like how the border around the screen is minimal (bottom is really small).
It used used for the usually, facebook, messenger, photos, music and some games. doesnt seem to lag between screens or apps as far as I can tell.
Has some smarts like if you lay down it wont rotate screen, you can set it for left or right hand use if the 5.5inch screen is too big (it isn't for my small hands). battery life is easily more than a day.
I bought a glass screen protector for the front, just in case.
    newer version is C5

  • Good mate of mine bought the Moto X form yesterdays deal this morning. He is also upgrading from a GNex. I bought a Redmi Note 3 Pro a few weeks ago and from using it for the past couple of days I am very happy with it also, although the camera is average at best (coming from a LG G3 and iphone 6). I don't think you could go wrong with either, although the Moto would be better from a non-tinkerers point of view (don't need to side-load google stuff, no chinese bloat).

  • Moto X Style for $299 from Vodafone.

    • this, but its too late now. all stock sold out in 1 day.

Seriously, Nexus 5x you cant beat it for the price. And its miles ahead of what the Gnex was, even when it was new.

  • Lots of good options guys thanks. But to summarise it seems most votes are for one of the Nexus 5x, LG G4 and Moto X style. Whats the typical price of nexus 5x and lg g4?

dont buy G4, a lot of bootlooping issues reported. LG cant fix it. have a search online.

Nexus 5X is $290 at eglobal I think, also I saw this code CLIXEXCLUS for $8 off the total

  • Hi mate,
I would recommend lenovo vibe p1.
It's even better then nexus 5.
Within the price range and it has exceptional battery 5000 amp plus excellent finger print sensor with quad core 3 or 2 GB RAM option with 32gb. I have got one for almost 8 months and I highly recommend it. Please compare the specifications.
    Hope this helps

  • If thinness is a priority, think about the Oppo. Great high performance phone for a low price.

    • Ahh so many options…what to get

  • I like Apple products only, maybe you can try the iPhone SE

    • or iPhone 5s 16GB from optus for $399

Samsung Galaxy J5. It ticks all boxes and it lasts at least 1.5 times longer than any phones listed above. In terms of practicality, Samsung Galaxy J5 tops every phone I have came across for $200-ish price tag. Don't even bother with Xiaomi - as you already aware, you cannot use Google Play Store out of the box. You can probably get a refub Sony Xperia Z1 for about $220 or HTC M7 for about $180, but I don't prefer a refub phone so it is up to you.

If you are okay with Chinese OEM phones, I know UMI phones have Google Play Store simply because they are on sales in UK through Amazon.co.uk, BUT their design is just mehish.

  • If you can access a UK delivery address…

  • Samsung NOTE4 or LG G4 would be your choice…
