ASUS GeForce GTX 970 Turbo 4GB Graphics Card $359 + $6 Shipping @ CPL

630

Hey All!
This has to be the cheapest I've ever seen a GTX 970 for. $359 pickup instore or add $6 for shipping!

Cheapest on static ice and anywhere else by almost $100!

Limited while stocks last, only saw it because my graphics card died lol.

Some food for though: New generation graphics cards are coming out in 5 weeks, so not sure if this will still be cheap comparative to the price then!

Link to deal

edit: Notting Hill store is now out of stock to pickup, but the West Melbourne and Online is still available
edit 2: Both stores are out of stock now, but if you order them online (and shipped to you) you'll get this price, otherwise in-store pickup prices are subject to change!
**edit 3: It's not longer at $359 :( and they've realized they miss-typed the price by $100 haha. Anyone who's made the purchase online would have only had to pay that price, and seems like anyone who decided to pick up instore but haven't paid would have to pay $459 even if the order was placed for $359 according to their terms and conditions. Sorry everyone!

The new generation equivalent will still be around $500 so not a bad deal.

    • Ahh I see, I was thinking that it'd push the price of this down (current average is about $450) to something below the price of this deal :P

      • +3

I think this price is about as good as you'll get!

    • When you say new generation equivalent, you mean x70 (1070 or whatever it'd be called) or as in terms of performance?

Just asking, because I do want to grab a new GPU this year, and I am considering options.

      • +1

Well I don't think there'll be a new gen "equivalent", but there'll be a new generation of card chips called the Pascal (Nvidia) and Polaris (AMD), which seem to boast a significant jump in GPU technology. Seems to vastly improve performance due to some new memory standard.

I don't know too much more about them but you can read more here:
        Article 1
        Article 2

        • I am kind of weighing my option, looking at price/performance ratio. This does look like really good price, I assume this is likely to be the price I should aim for in the clearance sale.

That said, if I could grab something from next generation and get significantly more from it, it might be better for me to wait. Hence my question what he meant by equivalent. I do assume that RRP would be far higher than this for 1070, that said, I assume better performance (especially in 2K~4K resolution which I might consider in relatively distant future).

        • I do not think the performance increase will be as big as every one thought. Nvidia has already ruled HBM at best it will be GGDR5X… so of course you will get an increase as you always do between generations. also other thing is they always release top of the line models first then the lower models come out later so you may have to wait a while for the middle tier cards…

        • @Oversimplified: I would wait. Initially, many would see the savings compared with the usual RRP ~ $100 however not for future proofing. Many people are initially caught up with the cost savings and make an impulsive purchase. It's like the shopper-dockets 4c per discount and travel 10Kms to a compatible servo realising that a $5 burning of Petrol has saved them $2 with the discount.
IMO, the next Gen will focus more on 4K gaming (or close to it) so I would save your cash, top up and get the next Gen. It may come out with DP1.4?
If you currently have a decent rig and thinking that a GTX970 would be a good addition to your already decent GPU, then it will be a waste.
Still a very good price though!
          Cheers

        • @vinni9284: Hmmm, I guess my GPU is not that bad (HD7850, which can do games at 1080p relatively alright). I don't know, I was thinking of grabbing something better for GPU for a long time (CPU is Haswell i7, so it's decent, GPU is dragging my system down I feel).

        • @Oversimplified: Overclock it … safely :-) As you quoted … "GPU for a long time" … the GTX970 is just about obsolete hence the price reduction!!

      • Pretty sure he means equivalent as in price bracket equivalent. The performance equivalent should be a GTX 1060 and wouldn't cost anywhere near $500. A GTX 1070 should perform like a 980 Ti for around $500.

        • +1

I highly doubt the 1070 will be anywhere near a 980Ti nvidia likes to keeps its horsepower at the top. Would be nice if it happened though =)

        • Well going by their history it should:
          970 performed similar to a 780 Ti
          670 performed similar to a 580
          460 performed similar to a 285

        • @bentan77: So not true, the 970 was a little under what the 780 does. Not equiv to a 780ti…

        • @algy: Look up the reviews from when it just launched, the 970 did perform closer to a 780 Ti than a 780 eg

        • Yeah the 970 performed a little bit better than a 780 in most tests.

          Edit:

          The 780ti beat it though:

Great price regardless of new cards.

  • I still have my XFX 7970 black edition. Worth change for this gtx970?

    • +9

15-20% increase. I'd wait for the next gen of cards.

    • +1 to Yuri, I'd wait for the next generation. My old card which died yesterday was a 7970, and I did a quick comparison and even then the 7970 still does some things better so I wouldn't bother.

      Comparison link

edit: I didn't actually buy this card if you're wondering, I just found an old 5850 lying around and hammering it with overclock haha

    • I've done builds and benchmarks on multiple 7970 and GTX 970 rigs. 970 shits all over the 7970 in general performance, largely due to drivers. Reliability wise, even more so. But obviously the 970 is 2x the price. Worth it in my experience. Depends on the games you play and your requirements though.

  • Very good price and an excellent card. Great find.

  • Worth the extra $80 vs a 2GB 960 For 1920x1200 gaming (on a 2500k) ?

    • +6

GO for it. Definitely worth it. Your cpu is good enough to handle this beast. GTX 960 is not really worth it for the price.

    • +3

Definitely. 2GB of GDDR5 just doesn't cut it in today's games even at 1080p.

      • +1

        I'm still using a 128mb graphics card…

    • +1

I would assume so, I was told (or I researched) that it's always better to get the newer generation card if the jump is <$100. Seeing as it has significantly more memory and overall does everything better.

      Here's a link for comparison :) link

    • Ordered :p

    • Another 16:10 person :) My Dell 2412M is still going strong.

Too bad there's hardly any 16:10 upgrade options these days :(

  • Hmmm… what to do. Have been holding off as I have no card at all, but I don't see an actual date for new gen or pricing.
Speculation is for 5 weeks or so from what I have read, but is this from the companies or potential customers?
Sorry, I'm not in the PC scene at all.
Worried that it may take a bit longer and that pricing will be a bit steep as it's new tech and demand will be high.

    • +3

It's hard buying new video cards at release as the demand outstrips supply and the prices increase as a result. It generally takes a few months for it to stabilize. If you don't mind waiting then that's the best option but a 970 at this price is a great deal too.

    • Depends what you really want out of a GPU. If you just want it to 'run' games at decent specs then this would be alright. Unless you'd consider forking out $1000 at release, the only benefit of waiting is that it might push prices of existing cards down

  • +6

For those holding off, the new cards will cost miles more than this

    • +1

Exactly. Definitely worth a purchase at that price. Bought mine nearly a year ago for about $440. (Kogan Ebay sale).
New gen are going to be $$$ -> As they usually are on release.

    • And usually hard to find for a month or so, as most are paper launches with limited stock released. I never buy a card on launch, I like to wait and find out if it has any problems when people other than paid reviewers have their say.

    • Well, this card is moving with age and don't forget that the cost is still a considerable spend considering the discount. $370 is still decent money
I still reckon it's worth the wait. Hold off, wait several weeks save another $200 combine and get the new.
Of course it depends on your budget. But then, you need a decent rig to support this card so you spend either way :-)

      Cheers

  • This is a great price for local stock. Cheapest I've seen previously was around $370 delivered from Kogan which was grey import.

  • +1

Great price and it looks good too. I've owned one since December and haven't noticed any coil whine which is nice… but do note that it gets a little loud under full load (it's blower style, to be expected for this type of card I guess) and you also can't run fanless mode even with modified GPU BIOS. Otherwise, it's a good card, especially for this price.

  • +1

I bought two of these last year and ended up selling because of the fan noise. This aftermarket cooler is a lot noisier than the reference blower coolers NVIDIA provide on some reference cards (but not the 970 unfortunately).

If fan noise does your head in I would stay away. Also there was no way to 0 RPM the fan for idle, the fan controller min RPM was hardwired in and it actually was more of a annoying drone at low RPM not high RPM

    Cheers

    • I have this card as well in my HTPC in a Thermaltake Core V1 and can't say I've noticed the fan noise that much at all.

      • +1

A 970 in an HTPC? Why so much power? Did you have a spare one or something?

        • Nah, just wanted to play games on the couch with a 60" plasma haha. My main PC is in a spare room and to upgrade it would have cost a fair bit and it is a massive case (mostly use it for work now), and I wanted something I could easily use for lans and had a bit of power behind it. Already had an older HTPC that I could play some basic games with, but sold it to a mate and upgraded to the current one I have now.

If I do need to play any more demanding games, I just stream them from my HTPC to my main PC, but overall I mostly play games with just a controller on the couch.

  • Cheapest shipping I am offered to Perth is $27 via Fastway courier, anyone know if I can get the $6 option to WA?

    • +2

ahh sorry about that then! I only looked at shipping to Melbourne :( Apologies !

    • +3

TLDR: The value of SLI depends on the situation. Assuming a completely new system build, the only time SLI 970s holds a considerable lead over the single 980 Ti is in The Witcher 3 and Black Ops 3 (at 1440). For every other title, either the 980 Ti leads (MLL, FO4, ACS, JC3) or the 2x970 lead is so small that it isn't worth the issues with other current and future releases. Micro-stutter remains a concern in some games, but isn't nearly as bad as it has been in the past. For these reasons, we'd generally feel most comfortable recommending a single GTX 980 Ti over the dual-GTX 970 setup

  • Wow, just wow.

  • +1

Bugger. I kept missing out on these kind of deals. I just got an R9 380 on its RRP and I'm feeling so ripped off right now. Not to mention all those crazy deals on SSDs and memory sticks…

  • Damn, only just pulled the trigger on a gtx 970 this week - I felt like $380 was a good price from Amazon. Ah well.

    • Depends on which one you got haha. tbh I'd pay just a little more for the non-blower styled fan systems if I slept in the same room as my pc or was concerned about the fan noise :)

  • I thought I'd check videos on fan noise on these and ran across this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQRVGtlJXZM and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_APgtZAMdQ8

the Ozbargain impulse to buy has magically subsided
